Welcome to English 11. My name is Mrs. Jones and I currently teach 11th and 12th grade English. This is my 18th year as
an English teacher for the Department of Education and my 8th year at TYWLS. I have taught 7th-12th grade English during these
years. Throughout my career I have been an advisor for various extra-curricular activities including a school newspaper, Step Team,
Double Dutch, Girls Learn International, Hurricane Sandy Relief, Peer Tutoring, Regents Tutoring, and Senior Activities. It is my
belief that students are in school to learn from instruction, experiences, peers, and extracurricular activities.
The purpose of this years course is to study the ways in which we are connected using literature as our basis for inquiry.
Sources include but are not limited to excerpts from African American stories, poems from Walt Whitman, T.S. Eliot, Sylvia Plath
Phillis Wheatley, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Langston Hughes, Catcher in the Rye, by JD Salinger, Macbeth, by William Shakespeare,
and A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry to name a few. Class time will explore discussion models, debate structures,
baseline/formal assessments, and skill practice through group work and independent study. The ENG 11 course will focus on proving
student created theses through an analysis of literary elements, evidence, whilst developing rigorous vocabulary and exploring the use
of counterpoints to strengthen arguments. We will be implementing the Common Core standards by placing specific emphasis on
using academic language, developing argumentation, and using nonfiction textual evidence to help guide their success.
Our class will follow the school wide grading policy breakdown of 50%=exams/quizzes/projects, 30%= classwork/
participation, and 20%=homework. Late homework and projects will not be accepted. Inappropriate behavior or any other
school rule infractions will result in a loss of points in classwork. If you are absent you have one day to complete the assignment you
have missed. Homework must be written in the TYWLS student Planner daily. The coursework is cumulative. Each skill and concept
will grow and connect throughout the units. I am excited to work with your families this year to prepare our students for success this
year as well as help prepare them for the English Regents they will take in June this year.
