Depression
(major depressive disorder)
What is Depression?
Depression is a common and
serious medical illness that
negatively affects how you feel,
the way you think and how
you act.
Depression is a DISORDER
Depression causes affects to the
body/mind such as causing
feelings of sadness and/or loss
of interest in activities once
enjoyed.
Symptoms
feeling sad or having a depressed mood
loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
changes in appetite-weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting
redouble sleeping or sleeping to much
loss of energy or increased fatigue
increase in purposeless physical activity or slowed movements and speech
feeling worthless or guilty
difficult thinking, concentrating, or making decisions
thoughts of death or suicide

It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a persons
ability to function at work and at home.
Does it Spread?
(in your body and to other people)

depression is a disorder that can spread to other people. I know

you your thinking it doesnt, but if you are around someone that is
depressed. Those feelings can start to rub off on to you, which will
increase you chances of becoming depressed.
depression is also a disorder that can spread inside your body and
cause other problems. When this occurs it is called (CSD), it is a
seizure like phenomenon in that brain. This then causes migraines.

depression can run in families

dysthymic depression makes you think that your
continuous low mood is just the way you are.

the reduced days of daylight hours of winter lead to
SAD, a form of depression

energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day to
day tasks.
Psychotic Disorder

that includes hallucinations, paranoia, or delusions

experience symptoms of psychosis
women are more likely to experience psychotic
depression than men are
Interesting Facts
1. depression affects an estimated one in 15 adults (6.7%) in
a years time
2. one in six people (16.6%) will experience depression at
some time
3. depression normally occurs in the late teens to mid-20s
4. women are more likely than men to experience depression
5. several factors can play a role in depression: biochemistry,
genetics, personality, environmental factors
Study:
Parent behaviors linked to kids anxiety, depression
young people whose parents tend to fight with each other
or are over involved in their kids lives are at increased risk
of depression and anxiety.
parenting is relative to other factors that might influence
depression and anxiety
stronger links were seen between parenting and depression
keeping track of kids whereabouts, or monitoring, while
giving them an autonomous say in family decisions were
parent behaviors associated with lower levels of depression
parents who were less warm, fought more, were over
involved or generally aversive had kids who often
experienced both depression and anxiety
depression is increased if there is a fracture in a parent-
teen relationship where conflict is frequent, intense, and
unresolved
there are a lot of factors that seem to be involved in the
development of anxiety and depression that we cant
change
Self Harm
One thing that is very
common for people that
deal with depression to
do is self harm.

Self harm is used when

the level of emotional
pressure has become too
high. By cutting yourself
it is a way of relieving
the tension.

Cutting makes the blood take away the bad feeling.

Pain can make you feel more alive when feeling numb or dead inside
Advice
You don't know what goes on in anyones life but your
own. And when you mess with one part of a persons life,
youre not messing with just that pat. Unfortunately, you
cant be that precise and selective. When you mess with one
part of a persons life, your messing with their entire life.
No one knows for certain how much impact they have on
the lives of other people. Oftentimes, we have no clue. Yet,
we push it just the same.
Outside I'm smiling, Inside I'm dying
Guess What?
Just cause someone
might look like they
are not depressed, they
may be completely
dead inside!

Just be careful with the words you use

The next two slides are a prime
example of this. They are both the
same photo just from different
perspectives. The first one is what
the person acts like for people. The
second one is how the person
actually feels.
