Who were the scientists that developed atomic theory? (4 scientists)

- J.J Thompson
- John Dalton
- Joseph Lavoisier
- Robert Millikan.

What are the parts of an atom and their functions?

- There are 3 parts
- Protons: protons have a positive charge
- Neutron: neutrons possess no net charge.
- Electrons: electrons have a negative charge. Electrons are the smallest parts of
the atom.

How do you determine the mass of an atom of an element?

- You add up the mass of protons and neutrons.

How do protons determine an element's identity?

- The number of protons determines the identity of the element.
- The number of protons determines the number of electrons, which determines
the chemical properties of the atom.
- Protons give the mass of an atom and provide positive charge to the atom.

How do valence electrons determine an elements chemical properties and reactivity?

- Valence electrons are involved in chemical bonding.
- When forming chemical bonds, atoms may lose, gain, or share valence
electrons.
- An element's chemical properties and including its reactivity, can easily gain,
lose, or share valence electrons the atoms.

Does an atom have an electrical charge?

- No

Analyze

1.a) What parts of the density experiment could have caused experimental error?
Not putting the battery into the water

1.b) How might you do the experiment differently to reduce that error?
You have to add water into the beaker and then measure the mass of grad
cylinder and material so you can find the volume too
2. Compare your density results and layering test to the predictions you made. If you were
wrong on any prediction, offer an explanation why.
We did not make any predictions.
Conclude and Apply

1. a) Write a short paragraph that describes how you can determine the density of a
fluid or solid. Include an evaluation of two different density-determining techniques.
Density of a fluid can be determined by putting it inside a beaker filled with water
and measuring it with a triple beam balance and for the solid you can just put the solid
on the triple beam balance and measure it.

b) Is one technique better than the other? Why?

The liquid one is easier because you can measure the volume from it too.
