TYWLS, Queens Course Outline for Parents 2016-2017

Course Name: 8th Grade Intermediate Level Science
Prerequisite: 7th Grade Science Department: Science
Teacher: Ms. Mathai Date: September 16, 2016
*All courses assess student performance based on the TYWLS School-Wide Grading Policy for grades 6-
12.

Course Description: This course prepares students for the

Intermediate Level Science Exam scheduled for June
5, 2017, and the 8th Grade State Lab Practical
scheduled during the week of 5/24 6/2. Additionally, it
serves as a foundation for the 9th Grade Living Environment
course. Students will engage in a spiraled curriculum, which
includes Biology, Ecology, Physics, and Chemistry.
Performance tasks will involve investigation, and
presentation, as per the CCLS standards.

Resources: Students will be provided with the following

textbook: New York Science Grade 8 by Glencoe Science.
Students will need on-line access daily in order to complete
lesson activities, homework, and explore the resources
shared on Edmodo.

Project Based Learning Opportunities: Every topic

covered, includes hands-on, inquiry based, scientific
investigations, which allow students to connect scientific
concepts with real world phenomena.

Communication:
Grades will be entered promptly into Skedula/PupilPath for
regular parent, and student, review. Parents will be called,
and emailed, as appropriate. I can be contacted at
jmathai@tywlsqueens.org, or 718 725 0402. I value regular,
and consistent, parent-teacher communication.
Extra Help: If students need extra assistance, I will be
available Tuesdays from 2:20 PM 2:55 PM, in Room 318.
Additionally, students are welcome to email me with any
concerns.

Career/College/Citizenship Connection:
Medicine, forensics, food production, cosmetics, astronomy,
environmental science - the list of lucrative careers built on a
basic knowledge of science concepts taught in this course is
a long one. Being a scientifically literate citizen is becoming
increasingly important in a society where daily decisions (for
example, reading your medical lab report, or, deciding which
food choices to make) require a basic knowledge of science.
