When Mrs Miller Showed Us How To Take Care Of The Salmon

There were 2 dead eggs in the tank so Mrs.Miller showed use how to
scoop them out. While Mrs.Miller was showing us how to scoop the dead
eggs out she told Catie to to flip a switch that would turn something off that
we needed to turn it back on when we were done scooping dead things out
so to turn it back on I pumped something up and down then it turned the
thing that she told us to turn off back on I do not know what we turned off.
The water was warmer than it is supposed to be so Mrs.Miller fixed it. To
see the temperature of the water there was a thermometer or I think is a
thermometer it said the temperature on the side of the tank so we looked at
that then there was another one on the front of the tank to the left so after
you look at the temperature of the tank the there is a clipboard next to the
tank so I wrote the temperature in a column then we needed to measure
the temperature of the water. We did that by dipping a fresh water stick into
the tank for about 3 seconds after that we took it out and matched the
colors on the stick that told us what the temperature was in the tank and
other things like if there was chorine in the tank.
Facts on salmon #1.Why do salmon need trees? Trees help keep water
clean. They hold soil and keep rain from washing it in to rivers. Their roots
absorb water, helping to prevent floods. Their shade keeps water from
getting to hot in the summer.
Their leaves provide food for insects that are eaten by salmon fry.
And,when old trees fall into streams they create safe hiding places for the
fry.
[Fry are salmon that just hatched out of their egg and have their yolk sac
on them.] [ A yolk sac is a pouch of food that salmon feed from until the fry
is old enuff to eat bugs or other things that size.]

How The Salmon Were On Wednesday December ,2016

There was one dead fry in the tank each one of us tried to get the dead fry
out but when somebody in our group tried to get it out it floated away to a
group of fry that were still alive and nobody wanted to risk killing a fry so we
had to leave it in the tank. One of the members in our group accidentally
sucked a up a fry that was still alive but the person let it back out I think it is
still alive.
Facts on salmon #1. Fry the memorize the smell of their home stream
before they migrate to the sea. When salmon are ready to ready to return
to freshwater, they follow the smell of their home stream. As the salmon
migrate from the ocean to their home streams, their color and shape
changes. Males get hooked jaws with sharp teeth. In some species, their
backs get humps. Both males and females change color.

There was 1 dead fry in the tank Catie and Elie tried to scoop it out while
me and Dlainy checked the temperature of the water in the tank and the
dipped the fresh water stick in the water and checked the nitrate and
matched the colors to the other things.
Facts On Salmon #1.Journey to the sea: In the spring the salmon fry
become restless. They turn silvery in color and lose their spots. As the
snow melts the mountains and streams run- -faster,they begin swimming to
the sea. Now they are called smolts. The journey to the sea is a
dangerous one.
Some smolts are killed going through dams. Many more become dizzy and
confused easy prey for predators such as gulls,Striped bass and
pikeminnows waiting on the other sides of dams. Other smolts can get
sucked out of the river and into canals that carry water to our crops.-Finally
the smolts arrive in an estuary, [An estuary is where a river meets a sea
and salt water mixes with fresh water.] Here the young salmon adapt to
salt water before they enter the ocean. Estuaries are rich in food, and the
young salmon eat as much as they can. The bigger they get the better the
chance of survival.

There were no dead salmon. When Catie dipped the fresh water stick in
the water the thing that there is a part that can lift up a little it came
unattached to the tank and was half in the tank but Catie caught it and we
pulled up back out of the water then I don't know why but we dipped
another fresh water stick in the water and we used that to find out the
temperature and the PH until when we tried to match something it was
strange because the thing we matched was different than all the other days
of the weeks the other days of the week had 0 on it so I thought that the
color could have dried so we did it one more time and we found out that the
color was dried out. Salmon Facts #1.Late in the winter, the baby salmon
hatch. They are weird looking, with huge eyes and a pouch full of egg yolk
attached to their bellies. You can see their hearts pumping through their
transparent skin! For a few weeks they stay hidden in the gravel, living off
their egg yolk. As the yolk gets used up, the pouch shrinks and then
disappears. Scientists call this buttoning up.

How The Salmon Were On Wednesday January 25,2017

I think there were 0 dead salmon. Elie gave the salmon 2 pinches of food
one on each side I think he gave them a little too much. Alkalinity and the
chlorine and those other things were okay I think. That part of the top fell
again but we got it out. Facts On Salmon #1 Sintesis think salmon find
their way home with their sense of smell when it is time to migrate back
they follow the smell of their home stream back to their home stream.

How The Salmon Were On Wednesday February 1, 2017

Elie did not come because Mr.Lloyd said they were taking a break. There
were 0 dead and 0 dying. Nothing was wrong if I remember correctly. We
fed them once. I think wednesday is now blogging day but the person that
was her turn to blog was to late Catie thought we could feed them again so
that the person that was going to blog about the salmon could do a video
on the salmon eating but I did not think we should because I thought then
we would be feeding them too much so do that so we didnt feed them
more. Facts on salmon #1.Once young salmon enter the sea, some
salmon, like coho, stay close to shore, while others, like spring chinook,
may swim 2,000 miles out to sea. While they are living in the sea, salmon
are close to the top of the food chain. They eat squid, shrimp and small
fish like herring.- Their main predators are sea lions and killer whales.
When they are ready to spawn, they return to the freshwater stream of their
birth.

How The Salmon Were On Wednesday February 8, 2017

Elie did not come again Caitie said she told him it was salmon day because
when I was going to get Catie,Elie and Dilainy Dilainy came so we went to
the science lab. Caitie the salmon we decided that by the time we were
done that if the salmon ate all of the pinch of food Caitie put in the tank and
if it was all gone that we would give them one more pinch of food that was
little because they were eating the food we gave them.
Facts on salmon #1. How long do salmon live in streams? What do they
eat? Who eats them? Where do they go in the ocean and how long do
they stay there? How many survive to adulthood? These are some of the
questions scientists are trying to answer. When we know what salmon
need, we can help them better.

One way we learn about salmon is tagging them. Some hatchery fish are
given coded wire tags. A special machine is used to put a tag in the fishs
snout. When the fish is caught as an adult, the tag is removed and read
under a microscope. The pattern of lines on the tag tells when and where
the fish was released.

Salmon also get check-ups by scientists using special live traps called
screw traps. These traps [which look like space capsules!] Are placed in
rivers to catch passing salmon. Scientists study the salmon, and then
return them to the water. Ocean and estuary check-ups are done using
nets which trail behind boats.

How The Salmon Were On Wednesday February 15, 2017

Dilainy fed the salmon. I think Dilainy dipped the water stick in the water.
We did the hardness and the other things on there I dont think there was
anything wrong with those. Also there was some thing in the tank that
looked like food but Elie thought it was their poop so Caitie got the thing
that suks up the food and the poop they said one person was supposed to
put put their mouth on one side and suk up the waste I was not sure we
were supposed to do that then and no one wanted to do that so we did not
suk it up. Facts on salmon #1. When salmon are living in the ocean
salmon eat a lot to store up plenty of fat. This fat is the fuel they need to
get to their spawning ground. Once salmon enter freshwater they stop
eating. So a salmon is a lot like a car that must make a long trip on one
tank of gas. If anything delays the salmon they may use up their fuel too
soon-and not have enough to make it home.

How The Salmon Were On Wednesday February 22,2017

The things on the freshwater stick were ok Dilainy and Caitie were
concerned with the temperature of the water because the outside of the
glass was fogged up. I thought it was okay because it was supposed to be
cold. They were not so sure but we wrote this water was cold? So then we
left the water alone. I dont think there was any waste from the salmon and
we did not see any dead salmon. Facts on salmon #1.Why Do We Need
Salmon? Some people depend on salmon for their jobs: commercial
fishers; fishing guides; people who make fishing gear and boats; work in
canneries and fish markets. Salmon are an important part of the culture
and livelihoods of many Indian people. Salmon are part of a ecosystem.
Many animals eat salmon:bears, eagles, sea lions, killer whales and more.
When salmon numbers decrease, these animals do also. Many people
enjoy watching salmon as they migrate upstream and spawn.

How The Salmon Were On Wednesday March 1,2017

Grace helped us so first she told us what to do to suck the poop or food out
of the tank but the first bad thing that happened was Caitie,Elie and Dilainy
were trying to lift up one of those jugs of water but spilled some water on
the floor which in the container did not look like much but it was a lot. The
next thing that happened is not my fault but is really bad so I dont know
why but someone in our group was sitting on the table in the science lab
the person said someone scared him I forgot whos name he said but for
some reason the part of the tank that that fell in 2 times that you could lift
up out of the tank was on the table and even though someone said
somebody else scared him and he sat on the table but why would he sit on
the table when someone frightened him but the top of the tank fell and half
of it broke and it was glass and he touched it which I really think he should
not have done he touched it because he was trying to clean it up we were
cleaning up the water then I said let's go tell Mrs.Miller and the person
said I dont want to go alone so Henry went with him to tell Mrs.Miller
when she came she stood there for a minute or so with her hands over her
mouth Caitie and Dilany were laughing a little bit and I was stressed Mrs.
Miller said stop this is not something to be laughing about I have to pay for
this with my own money how did this happen? so the person that did it told
her how it happened and she something like saidYou know that the fourth
grade teachers picked special kids to take care of the salmon that they trust
and think are responsible because if we had 125 hands touching the
salmon they would likely die and when something like this happens you
loose a little of that trust. Did you get a janitor or where you just standing
around?Mrs.Miller asked I asked where is a janitor? She smiled a little
and Henry said I know where one is I will go get oneand when he came
she told the janitor a little bit about the glass and he started cleaning it up.
After we finished cleaning up the water I looked at the temperature of the
water and there was no more room on the clipboard to write the
temperature and those other things so I used the back of one of the sheets
that the salmon people wrote on earlier in the year. Facts on salmon#1.
Life In The Stream : A stream is a much safer place for a young salmon
than a sea, but there are still many challenges. Birds, frogs, mammals, and
other fish eat salmon fry. Floods can wash fry out of streams and into big
rivers before they are ready to migrate.

People also can create problems for salmon fry. Our dams change the
amount that flows in streams and rivers. Sometimes there may be too
much water, and sometimes there may not be enough. In summer streams
may even dry up completely. When you conserve water you may be
helping a young salmon survive!

How The Salmon Where On Wednesday March 8 ,2017

There was a power outage because the wind was so powerful and Myla
was there instead of Elie I think he got fired there was a huge air bubble so
Mr.Lloyd was there and he tried pumping the thing that turns on the
bubbles but it did not work then he said go to the classes and get all the
salmon people so Caitie, Dilany and Myla went to get everyone I stayed
with Mr.Lloyd and then when all the classes but Mrs.Townsends class was
there he said is everyone here? and I said No Mrs.Townsends class is
not so Myla I think is the one who went to get the people from
Mrs.Townsend's class then I think he said I am not placing any blame but
someone left the I forgot what they left off but I think it was the thing that
pumps the water out taking something out I forgot what it takes out but the
it pumps the water back in the tank I think. So that is the thing that
somebody left off he might have also said or the power outage could of
turned it off but I am not positive he said that last part. I dont remember
the other things he said so then everyone went back to class after he
finished except the wednesday salmon people the we did the temperature
and the other things on the freshwater stick I dont remember anything
being wrong. I dont think there were any dead salmon.

How The Salmon Were On Wednesday March 16?,2017

Dilainy was not there that day so I think her name was Aleas a tuesday
salmon person was there instead I dont feel like she really helped take
care of the salmon we felt the thing that pulls in water then pushes it back
out we put our hand in front of it to make sure it was working.

On Wednesday March 23 2017

I was on vacation.

How The Salmon Were On Wednesday April 12,2017

There were no dead salmon I got to feed the salmon we forgot to turn off
the filter I think is what it is called then Myla reminded us when we were
halfway done sucking the poop and food out and there was a lot of food
and\or poop in the front of the tank. Dilainy accidently spilled water on the
floor but we cleaned it up.

How The Salmon Were On Wednesday April 19,2017

We only spilled a little of water on the floor. There were on dead salmon
we are still out of test strips to test the hardness and the chlorine and those
other things Myla and me went to Mrs.Miller Myla told her we were still out
of test strips. Well there are two types of test strips the kind where you dip
it in to test the hardness in the water and the chlorine in the water then the
other kind where you use it to test the pea or the ammonia I think is what it
is called. We were out of the ones that we use to test the chlorine and
hardness in the water called. Myla fed the fish two pinches I think. Facts
on salmon#1 Salmon is the common name for fish in the order
Salmoniformes. They live in the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans ,and
are anadromous, which means most types of salmon are born in
freshwater, migrate to the sea, and return to freshwater to reproduce

How The Salmon Were On Wednesday April 26,2017

There were no more stripes that we use to test the pea/ammonia there
were still no stripes to test the chlorine and hardness Dilany and Catie went
to Mrs.Miller and Mr.Lloyd if there were any more test stripes but they said
no they didn't have anymore at that time also I think they are going to get
more because Lila came in and took the bottle. We sucked the food and
poop out of the water I got so fish water in my mouth and swallowed it and
it was disgusting. There were no dead salmon. There was a air bubble but
when we pumped the thing that you are supposed to pump when there is
an air bubble and the air came out I knew there was an air bubble because
when I put my hand in front of the thing that is supposed to be sucking out
water there was no water being sucked out of the tank and there is
supposed to be. Also I got to feed the fish. Facts on salmon #1Did you
know the oldest known age of a salmon is 8 years old? The types of
salmon that the oldest known age is the Atlantic salmon.

How The Salmon Were On Wednesday May 3,2017

We sucked out the food and poop. Firstly I think it happened when we
were pouring the water in the tank it was only me and Catie because I think
Dilainy was absent and Myla was doing something so Myla and Dilainy
weren't there to help with the salmon and when me and Caity tried to lift the
jug and put the water in the tank it was difficult because it was only me and
Caity. So we werent strong enough and we didnt move the food before
we could get the water into the tank we accidentally bumped the food and it
spilled. After that happened we went to Mrs.Miller and asked for help and
Henry in Mrs.Millers class came to help us. So I cleaned up most of the
spilled food. Caity looked in the box that has things for the salmon in it. I
got the cup the that the food had been in and Caity said we have to pour
more food in the cup at first I objected but otherwise if we didnt the
salmon people on thursday might not have any food in the cup to feed the
salmon because we dont know when Mrs.Miller comes to fill up the cup
with food. So Caity poured what we thought was somewhat close to the
amount it had in it before we spilled the food. I think we also accidentally
might have spilled some water on the floor but it happens. I think the
ammonia was okay also I dont think there were any strips to test the
hardness or the chlorine yet. I think other than that if I remember correctly
everything was okay.

How The Salmon Were On Wednesday May 10,2017

There is a group of bloggers now. Myla came when we were almost done
because Mr.Lloyd said she was helping kindergarteners. We had switched
specials times with the third graders because of the M-step so we took
care of the salmon early. The bloggers where there that day so we
explained what we were doing before we did it for example before I put my
mouth on the pump to suck the poop out the I said something likewe are
going to suck the poop and food on the bottom of the tank out either me or
Dilainy put our mouth on the thing that sucks the poop or food on it we
explained that one of us we going to put our mouth on the end of the tube
then suck the poop and the food on the bottom of the tank. I think the
ammonia was okay. There still werent any test strips to test the hardness
and the choline. Im thinking that they may not be getting more because I
think about 5 days until we release the salmon and I dont know if its worth
it getting strips that will be used for only 5 more days or less

Monday May 22,2017 Salmon Release

We went to a park that had a river we went one class at a time to release
the salmon. A few of the volunteers scooped the salmon out of a big
bucket. Each of the salmon people got their own salmon to release but the
other people shared their salmon with a partner.
