1. Introduction

1.1. ECG & Heart Rate

Electrocardiography measures the electrical activity of the heart. The

activation of the heart starts at the sino-atrial node that produces the
heart frequency, at about 70 cycles per minute. This activation
propagates to the right and left atria muscle tissues. At the atrio-
ventricular node, there is a delay to allow the ventricles to fill with
blood from atrial contraction. The depolarization then propagates to
the ventricles through the Bundle of His and spreads along the Purkinje
fibers. This activates the ventricles to contract and pumps blood to the
aorta and to the rest of the body. As the above cycle occurs, the trans-
membrane potential, which is the voltage difference between the
internal and external spaces of the cell membrane, changes at each
stage. These voltage differences can be measured using surface
electrodes. The different peaks P, Q, R, S, T, and U are noticeable at
these stages, as observed in figure 1.1.
The heart rate or pulse rate is the frequency of this heart cycle, and
more specifically, the number of heart cycles that occur every minute.

ECG MONITORING

Data acquisition (DAQ) is the process of measuring an electrical or

physical phenomenon such as voltage, current, temperature, pressure,
or sound with a computer. A DAQ system consists of sensors, DAQ
measurement hardware, and a computer with programmable software.
Compared to traditional measurement systems, PC-based DAQ systems
exploit the processing power, productivity, display, and connectivity
capabilities of industry-standard computers providing a more powerful,
flexible, and cost-effective measurement solution.

2.5. DAQ Building:

Acquiring a signal from the hardware

Configuration:

Set the signal input range from -5 +5 and samples to read 5000 and the
acquisition mode N-samples.

2.6. Operation:
1. Connect ECG simulator to the ECG board.
2. Connect power for the board.
3. Connect the output of the hardware to the data acquisition system.
