Bentley Lunch Intramural Program

December 2016

Josh Bouwsema
Introduction

The intramural sports program is be run by the grade eight homeroom class. This class spends
approximately ten to twenty minutes every other Friday discussing the new bi-weekly sport. The
sports should go with the seasons (flag football outside in September, volleyball inside in
November) with any extra sports being played in between (belly baseball and Ultimate Frisbee).
The grade eight students decide on the follow sport during the meeting and discuss the safety
concerns. Jr/Sr High are divided (6-8/9-12) and elementary are divided (4-5/1-3). Each group
will be in the gym for 2 days a week. Days alternate and Fridays can either be free gym time or
games for everyone.

Safety Concerns

Before anything can happen in an intramural program, all safety concerns need to be addressed.
All sports need to be broken down into three categories of safety:
1. Supervision
2. Instructional
3. Equipment

Each of these three aspects needs to be addressed in detail for each sport. This is based with the
Safety Guidelines of 2013:

Each of the three should be discussed by the class in charge of the bi-weekly sport and it should
be discussed at the beginning of the sport with both of the age groups in the gym. The following
is an example safety breakdown for floor hockey:

1. Supervision
a. On-site Supervision (staff member)
b. Observation of rules followed (staff/students)
2. Instructional
a. No body contact
b. No stick to body contact
c. Crease for goalies
3. Equipment
a. Rubber hockey ball
b. Plastic sticks, not wooden
c. Goalies wear caged masks (if available)

The students should create these basic safety guidelines for each sport during the Friday meeting.
The link above should provide many helpful tips for safety and can even inspire students to pick
new sports.
Point System

The point system is based on participation on a homeroom basis. Each student earns five points
each day for their home room for participating for that day. Each student earns one points each
day for their home room for watching the game for that day. Each teacher earns twenty points
each day for their home room for participating for that day. The following is an example of the
grades scores.

Each sport is added up and the total is divided by the number of students in class in order to not
give favour to the class with the most people. This way, the highest percentage of students in a
grade will win the prize. The Intramural Cup (pictured below) is given out at each school
assembly to both the elementary winner and the Jr/Sr High winner. The two classes share the cup
until the next school assembly. The two winning classes write the home room class and teacher
initials as well as the month and year on the cup itself.
Keeping track of the students participating and watching
is the most important part of scoring:

1. Use a class list from the teacher and mark either

a P for playing or W for watching next to the
name of each student with the date across the top
2. Have two sheets of paper with either playing or
watching written across the top. Write the grades
across the top and record the students name
under their grade level

These two ways are very effective; have the students

write their own name on the sheets to save time.

The following is a list of sports, equipment needed for each, and a suggested time of the year.
Having flip-card scoring is optional for all sports. The sports can be done more than once a year.

Grade 8 Responsibilities

The following is a list of the responsibilities for the grade eight homeroom during the Friday
meeting:

1. Discuss anything of relevance of the past game

a. What went well?
b. What needs to be improved on?
c. Are there any students who need to be talked to about inappropriate behaviour? If
so, go with a teacher to talk them
2. Chose the next sport
3. Chose the 2-3 students who will help organize it
a. These students should be aware of the rules and understand how to play.
b. They should help set up at 12:15 (this includes getting all equipment ready)
c. They should help make fair teams and hand out pinnies
d. They should clean up after the end of the lunch period
4. Go over all safety concerns and fill out the safety breakdown chart. This needs to be
brought to the supervising teacher on the first Monday of that sport. It should be explain
to the age groups and put on the gym bulletin board.
a. Supervision
b. Instructional
c. Equipment
5. Tally up the scores for the past two weeks and add them to the google docs accordingly.
a. When an assembly is coming up, the class needs to tally the Grand Totals up for
the elementary and for the Jr./Sr. High.
