Social Network analysis (SNA)
1. SNA. Social Network Analysis (SNA) looks into relationships among
actors in a group, organizations, communities and even countries. In
this social media age, it can gather, examine and map data. The data
can: (a) describe the relationships between actors, (b) identify their
dependencies, (c) show the structure, and (d) predict outcomes of
future actions. It has now become a distinct method having tools for
collecting data, statistical analysis, visual representation, etc. Besides
OD, it relates with big data and data journalism.

At best, they are like this!

Organizations never WORK like this!

And with SNA, they REALLY looked like this!

In organizations, Relationships matter

Robots
3. Robots. A computer instructed electro-mechanical machine that can
perform partial or fully automatic actions mimicking human works.
Computers handle the control, sensory feedback, and information
processing. They can replace humans in dangerous work environments
manufacturing processes. In fact, many specialized, complex and high
precision manufacturing firms use them. Industrial robots perform
many non-value adding functions as well. They can handle toxic
materials, chemical wastes, bombs and others that are so expensive and
dangerous for humans to do. Robots can vary in sizes. Nanorobots are
are microscopic and others can be as high as three-storey building.
Recently a special unmanned and remote controlled drones can
navigate autonomously, even beyond human's line of sight. Despite the
developments, the debates on the robots' pros and cons continue.

Cloud computing & big data
5. Cloud Computing and Big Data. Cloud computing is storing and
accessing data and programs online rather than our hard drive. You are
already using cloud computing if you use Gmail, Dropbox, and Google
Docs, or backing up your hard drive online. Big data follows. It is a
collection of online digital data. They can come from within the firm and
external sources on real-time. Unstructured (mostly text) or multi-
structured (text, images or video) data may need pattern recognition
and deep processing. Likewise, analysis include the 5 Vs of information:
volume, velocity, variety, veracity and value. Proper processing and
analysis can trigger learning insights, new discoveries, and even
innovations.

Artificial intelligence
8. Artificial Intelligence. AI is the art of making intelligent machines and
intelligent computer programs. It helps computers to learn more and
understand human intelligence better. AI the future of programming.
Current AI activities focus on speech recognition, learning, planning,
problem solving and research. If you have used Siri, Google Translate,
then you have seen the beginnings of AI. With AI, computers will be
better able to: program other computers, reason, solve problems,
recognize objects, as well as manipulate and move objects.

Telecommuting 3.0
9. Telecommuting 3.0. Telecommuting emerged from the eighties. With
telecommunications technology, it enables people to work outside a
central workspace. While maintaining traditional offices, telecommuters
can work from home or other work spaces for a period of time weekly
to reduce commuting time. While embraced in many parts of the world,
this has yet to take off in the Philippines. The next wave, Telecommuting
3.0 will see online collaboration, conferencing, webinars, and others.
We will see dramatic increase in the use of groupware, virtual private
networks, conference calling, videoconferencing, virtual call centre and
Voice over IP (VOIP). It will allow communications over long distances,
saving significant amounts of travel time and cost.

Privacy & security
10. Privacy and Security. Having more data stored and processed online
will blur the boundary between being private and being public. To stay
online, you have to publish stuffs to be shared in open, public spaces.
Else, people will find lesser chance to enrich friendships, find or grow
communities, learn new things, and act as economic agents online.

Computer based risk protection has long been gone. In the future,
companies will use advanced risk assessment and mitigation. This is
inevitable as the intensity of using online resources and applications will
lead to more and more security protection issues. This will lead to new
models of building security directly into applications. Perimeters and
firewalls are no longer enough. Every app needs to be self-aware and
self-protecting.
