5E Instructional Model

The science curriculum utilizes the 5E instructional model of learning cycle (Trowbridge,
Bybee, & Powell, 2000), which is a constructivist model that has five essential phases of
instruction:
1. Engagement
2. Exploration
3. Explanation
4. Elaboration
5. Evaluation

This approach takes students through the learning cycle by tapping into prior knowledge
and experiences, new explorations and investigations.
