design, evidence, factor,
fair test, interpret, - understand how knowledge of shadows can be applied
measurements, observe,
plan, predict, results, - recognise some factors that influence how shadows form
variable.
- understand that shadows can grow bigger and smaller

- recognise that the size of a shadow is affected by the

position of the object

Investigations: Playing a shadow game, making shadow

puppets, making 3 D glasses. Students will complete these
activities and teacher will ask the following questions:

Do the shadows look like the object? How does the shadow
differ from actual object? What size should your puppets
be? How could you use a mixture of materials to create
effects? As a creative activity, allow students to research
the use of shadow puppets in entertainment. This will
include shadow puppets, but also how light and dark are
used for impact in films and plays.

This unit helps students to understand the reasons why

shadows grow and shrink and link this to light travelling in
straight lines. Students are asked to explore light
quantitatively by carrying out an investigation involving
measurement. It will be a good opportunity to develop
scientific enquiry skills. Ask students to remember what
happened when they moved their puppets closer to the
screen. Possible answers: Closer to the screen the
shadow shrinks; further away the shadow grows bigger.
Students will investigate how the size of a shadow can be
changed. Put them in groups, so they write predictions how
shadow will change if they start to move the object. When
they will investigate the size of the shadow ask: Will these
measurements be reliable? Students will repeat the
experiment and write their results in given tables.

Conclude the topic by asking following questions: why does

the shadow of an object get bigger as the object is moved
closer to the light, how can you collect reliable data, what
kind of material must be used to make a shadow puppet.
