WelcometotheRawShooter|Premium2006RawWorkflowGuide.Theaimof
thisguideistoassistthoseofyounewtotheworldofDSLRRAWingettingthe
mostfromRawShooter|Premium2006(hereafterreferredtoasRSPtosavemy
delicate typing fingers) and therefore from your RAW images. It introduces a
basicworkflow,i.e.anumberoflogicalstepstohelpyouonyourjourneyfroma
largegroupofRAWfilesonyourDSLRtotheendresult,aperfectlyprocessed
andcolourcorrectedTIFF/JPEGfileforyoutoprintorsendtoclientsandfriends.
Thisguideisintendedtobeusedasanintroductiontothefeaturesandfunctions
of RSP that make it such a powerful product. Full details of how to use these
features and functions can be found in the accompanying RawShooter |
premium2006UserGuide.
Withfamilyandworkpressuresonallofus,itisessentialthatwemakethemost
efficientuseofthelimitedtimethatwehavetoprocessourimages.Thereforethe
followingworkflowistheonethatIuseandwhichIhavefoundtobethesimplest
for most photographers that I teach. Remember Im a working professional
photographerandthisistheexactworkflowthatIusewhenItravelandathome
in the office. It is by no means a definitive guide, or a gospel that must be
religiously followed, it is simply a good way of getting through your images
quickly and efficiently. My hope is that it provides some guidance for you and
gives you the confidence to develop your own workflow from it. Thats the
beautyofRSP;itreducesyourtimeinfrontoftheworkstationmaximizesyour
freetimeandallowsyoutopackinmoretimeforseriousphotographythanyou
mighthavedonepreviously.
WorkflowStep1SettinguptheDSLR
Yep thats right; the workflow starts with your DSLR. Setting up your DSLR
correctlycansaveyoualotofstressinthefieldandwillallowyoutoconcentrate
onyourphotographyandnailingthosegreatshots.RememberalthoughRSPcan
work wonders in resurrecting poorly exposed images it cannot correct for bad
composition or out of focus images, they are your responsibility. Here is my
simpleguidetosettingupyourDSLR:
1. White Balance Simply set this to AUTO and forget about it as RSPs
powerfulWhiteBalancetoolswilltakethepainoutofthisforyou.
PROTIP
HistogramsusetheLCDHistogramsofyourDSLRtoevaluateexposureand
nothowitlooksontheLCDscreen.Overexposureistheenemyofallofusasthe
DSLR can have a tendency to burn out highlights, therefore when shooting I
alwayserronhavingthehistogramslightlytotheleftofcentre.Thismeansthat
the image will be slightly underexposed but the highlight detail is preserved.
ThisunderexposurewilltakesecondstocorrectusingRSPwithnodegradation
totheimage.
WorkflowStep2GettingyourRAWimagesontothePC
IfyoualreadyhaveyourimagesonthePCthenyoucanskipthisstep.Fortherest
ofyou,simplyconnectyourportabledownloaderormediacardreadertothePC
and start the RSP Downloader which is located on the main toolbar as shown
below:
Thedownloaderissimpletouse:
Specify the location of your files. If you have multiple directories then
choose the top most one and RSP will automatically find all those
underneathit.
SpecifythedirectorynameonyourPCthatyouwanttocopy/movethe
imagesto.
Forget renaming images at this stage as youll end up deleting a lot
anyway; it makes more sense to rename them after you have chosen the
best.
Unless you need it, ensure the Keep original folder structure option
uncheckedsothatallyourimageswillendupinasingledirectory.Any
duplicateswillberenamedforyouautomatically,hopefullyifyouhaveset
yourDSLRnamingstandardtoCONTINUOUSthiswillnothappen.
Keep rename duplicate files option checked so that any duplicates are
appendedwitha1elsetheapplicationwillnotprocessthedownload.
WorkflowStep3Editingyourwork
Everyone needs to edit their work because all photographers, no matter what
theirlevelofability,takeimagesthatarebetterthanothers.Betoughandthrow
awaytherubbish,dontkeepanythingthatyoudidnotintendtobeoutoffocus
and learn from your
mistakes. The starting
point for any editing is
usually one of the 5
Display Modes that RSP
provides. Shown here is
display mode 2 (Shortcut
ALT+2),whichshowsall
the RAW thumbnails in
the currently selected
directory.Acrossthetops
are the group tabs, for
images that has been
given a priority or those
thataredestinedtobedeleted.Thepurposeofthesewillbecomeclearoverthe
nextfewpagesandafullexplanationcanbefoundintheUserGuide.
RSP provides several different approaches to editing and what suits one
photographermaynotsuitanother.Thereforewhatfollowsisasummaryofthe
RSPtoolsthatIuseformyworkflow.Idonotuseoneinpreferencetoanother,
but instead use themincombination to helpmeedit my workandidentify the

Iusetheslideshowasafirstpassthroughmyworktoidentifytheobviousimages
fordeletion,andalsotoseparateanyobvioussuperstarsbygivingthemapriority.
TousesimplyselectyourdirectoryanduseShortcutALT+S;usethetoolbarat
thebottomtoassignprioritiesormarktheimagefordeletion.Itdoesnotdelete
imagesstraightaway,thatis
your job later on and you
willgetthechancetochange
your mind. Navigation
through the images is
simple use either the
mouse thumbwheel or
keyboardarrows.
The great new Magnifier
tool will help you assess
individual images for
sharpness. Just RH click
anywhere in the image and
select the magnifier option.
The cursor location controls
themagnifiedsection;itisa
greattoolforidentifyingout
of focus images that can be
deleted.
AttheendofthesequenceyouwillhavetoESCtoreturntothemainRSPdisplay,
whichwillhopefullyhaveasmallercollectionofimagesondisplaythatyouwant
tokeep(plusafewintherecyclegroup).IfyouhaveusedtheMagnifiertoolthen
itwillstillbeactivewhenyouexittheslideshow,justRHclickonanysectionof
animagetounchecktheoptionandturnitoff.
imageisthedynamicpreviewwhichdisplaysatruetolifeimagewhichcanbe
zoomed upto 800%. Using this I can easily assess the sharpness of an image,
somethingwhichisnotpossiblewiththeslideshowfunction.Notealsothatfrom
thisscreenIcanaccessalloftheRSPtools,includingcolourcorrection,formatting,
andthebatchprocessor.TohelpmeassesstheimagesharpnessIusetheRAWvs.
RAWcomparisontoolandtheMagnifier(seelater).
Fromtimetotimeweallgettheurgetokeepourfingersontheshutterbutton
longer than is really necessary. The result is usually a collection of almost
identical images, with one that is usually slightly sharper than the others. The

3 or 4 similar images
alongside each other to
pick the sharpest. To
move around the
images simply use the
Navigator window
(shownonbottomright
above the histogram).
The image on the right
has a sharper eye so it
can be kept whilst the
one on the left can be
markedfordeletion.Todothissimplymovethecursorovertherawthumbnailin
thetopwindow;arowoficonswillappearandtherecyclebincanbeselected.
PROTIPs
FastBrowsetobrowselargenumbersofthumbnailsusingRSPsimplyturnoff
theproxycreationusingthetoolbaricon.Youarethenfreetocarryout
fileoperationssuchasmove/copywithouthavingtowaitfortheproxy
creationtocomplete,whichcouldtakeseveralminutes.
Multipleimagesyoucanassignthesameprioritytoseveralimagesbysimply
selectingthemallfirst.Althoughthecontroliconswillonlyappearforoneimage
theywillbeappliedacrossallselectedimages.
DisplayfoldersthefoldersusedtoorganiseyourRAWimages(ALL,1etc)are
onlyvalidwithRSPandareonlyusedfordisplaypurposes;yourRAWfilesare
neverphysicallymoved(unlessyoudosousingdrag&drop)andremainintheir
originaldirectories.
MemoryusageifyouhaveaperformanceconstrainedPC(i.e.onewithonly512
MB RAM) then I recommend that the high resolution preview cache size
preferences option be set to 2. This means that you will only be able to view 2
images side by side using the raw vs. raw comparison tool, which is not a bad
thingasitismucheasiertoviewtwoimagesonthescreenthanfour.Ofcourseif
youhaveapowerfulPCwithplentyofRAMthen4willbetheoptionforyou.
The Magnifier already seen in
the slideshow, the magnifier is
great to use with the dynamic
preview for assessing the effects
ofaddingnoise/sharpening.
Remember RH click inside the
imagerevealstheoptiontoswitch
iton,alongwiththeRGBReadout
function.
As already discussed, DSLRs generally name their images with the first four
charactersbeingafixedsetofcharacters(oneofmycamerasis83DSforexample)
andthenextfourbeingasequencenumberfrom0to9999.EvenwithyourDSLR
namingoptionsettoCONTINUOUSthelimitof9999willbereachedsurprisingly
quickly.AtthispointyourDSLRresetsto0000,whichofcoursemeansthatitwill
now be creating a set of names that already exist, a nightmare in the making.
ThereforeitisbesttorenametheRAWfilestoyourownnamingstandard,which
preventsthisconflicthappening.
RSP provides a Batch Rename function to allow to you to quickly and easily
renameyourgroupofRAWswithyourownchosennamingstandard.Thereare
asmanynamingstandardsasstarsinthesky,butasageneralruleIadviseyouto
stick to something simple and
whichwilllastalongtime.Iuse
AAnnnnnn,whereAAisafixed
prefix and nnnnnn is a custom
counter from 000000 to 999999.
Believe me even I will have
trouble reaching this number
quickly! The custom counter
fieldisthestartofthesequence
number and youll have to
manually enter it the first time
you rename anything in RSP.
Afterthatthehighestvaluewill
berememberedbyRSP,evenacrossproductclosure,sothatyournextrenaming
willstartfromthecorrectpoint.
Nowtheeditingiscompleteyouarehopefullyleftwithasmallcoreofyourbest
images.Thefinalstageoftheworkflowistoprocess theseimages,makingany
necessarycorrectionstocolour,appearance (i.e.sharpening,noisereduction)or
format(cropping,straighteninghorizons)alongtheway.Toaccessthecorrection
windowsofRSPeitherdoubleclickonathumbnailfromMode2,chooseModes
1,3,4 or 5 from the toolbar or select the toggle icon. A full explanation of the
contentsofthesewindows,andofeachtool,canbefoundintheUserGuide.As
mentioned previously I always prefer Mode 4 as you can access all necessary
functionsfromthisonewindow.Alsonotethatthereisnorightorwrongwayto
makecorrections,justdosountilyouarehappywiththeresults!
ImageCorrections
Sincetherearemanywaystocorrectimagesitwouldtakeseveralbookstocover
this in any worthwhile detail, so instead here are some guidelines. As always
pleaserefertotheUserGuideforfulldetails:
WhiteBalancegetthiscorrectbeforeanythingelse.Mostofthetimeit
willnotneedchanging,ifitdoesthentrytheeyedropperfirstonaneutral
area of your image. If you have a sunset then try increasing the white
balancevaluealittletogiveamorepleasingresult.
Fill Light this will increase the dynamic range of the image, in plain
Englishit will justmakeit lookmorepleasingto the eye.Ingeneral Fill
Light should only be used if the Exposure Compensation slider cannot
correcttheexposureasyourequire.Usethisparametercarefullythough,
usuallylessthan5ontheslider,asitcanhighlightnoise.
Curves / Levels use these to boost the contrast of your image or to
increaseitsmood,thebestresultsareobtainedbyfixingtwopointsand
using a slight sshaped curve. Custom curves can be saved too and
highlight/shadowpointssetviatheeyedropper.
Reducing image noise to check the noise in an image zoom to 100%
(Shortcut CTRL + TAB) and select a border between the subject and the
background. To reduce the effect of noise apply a little noise / colour
suppression(typicallylessthan5)untilyouseeadifference.Beawarethat
adding too much suppression will have a negative effect on the subject
detail.Ifyoufindthatyoustillhavetoomuchnoisethentryreducingthe
detailextractionparameterasthisusuallyhelps.ThenewHotPixelnoise

Whenapplyinganycorrectionstoyourimagesyouwillfindthefollowingtools

PROTIPs
Applyingchanges tomultipleimagessometimesItakeasequenceofimages
that I want to keep and need to ensure that each image is identical in terms of
whitebalance,saturationetc.RSPprovidestwomethodsofdoingthis,perhaps
the easiestthough is to simply use Copy / Paste (CTRLC / V) corrections from
oneimagetoanother.
Processingparametersallphotographershavedifferentrequirementsfortheir
imagesandyoumayfindthatthedefaultsfortheRSPcorrectionslidersmaynot
be to your taste. The processing parameters dialog allows you to change the
default values for the correction tools, for example if you want your images to
alwaysappearswithlessdetailextraction,moresaturationorperhapsaslightly
darkerexposure.
ColourinformationfileRSPstoresinformationabouteachRAWfile,including
priorities,locationandanycolourcorrectionparametersthatyoumake,inasmall
file called a colour information file. This is stored in the .RWSettings directory,
which is created immediately underneath the directory where the RAWs are
stored.ThisisonereasonwhyyoushouldalwaysusetheRSPdrag&droputility
to move files instead of windows explorer; the colour information files will
automatically be moved to the new location with the parent RAW files. If you
needtoreprocesstheRAWfileinthefuture,thenthecolourinformationfilewill
beeasytofindandwillhavepreservedallofyourcolourchanges.
Thisisthefinalstageoftheworkflow,creatingthefinalmasterpiecetoshowthe
world. Once colour correction / formatting are complete, RSP provides several
differentchoicesforyou:
1. FastProofifyouwantemailsizedproofsofasingleorgroupof
imagesthensimplyselecttheFastProofoptionfromthetoolbar.
2. Postprocessingmostuserswanttopostprocesstheirimages,perhapsto
removedustspotsortoeditthemfurtherinspecializedapplicationsbefore
printing/distribution.
Thebatchprocessorissimplicityitselftouse,justspecifytheoutputdirectoryand
format and the rest is handled automatically. I receive many emails about the
correctoutputformat;thesimpleruleistoconverttoa16bitRGBTIFFifyouare
intending to performany further colour correction in your image editor. If not,
thenan8bitRGBTIFFwilltakeuphalfthestoragespaceandwillhavethesame
levelofdetail.
Interpolation/Resizing
Thescaleparameteronthebatchprocessingwindowcontrolswhethertheimage
is resized. If you want to increase it then either type in a new percentage or a
specificpixelwidth/height.Alittleextrasharpeningmayhelptootocombatthe
inevitableslightlossofdetailduringtheexpansionprocess.
ASuggestedBatchWorkflow
Thebatchprocessorisamultithreadedapplication,inEnglishitmeansthatyou
canqueueupavirtuallylimitlessnumberofimageswhilstitprocessestheoneat
theheadofthequeue.ThisisgreatfortheworkflowandIuseitasfollows:
1. Setupalloftheoptionsonthebatchtabincludingthedestination,format
andscaleoptions.EnsurethattheAutomaticallyOpenwithfieldisleft
UNchecked.
2. Switch back to the correct / compose tabs, make all the necessary
adjustments to an image, when you are ready to process just hit the
Shortcut INSERT key. This adds the image to the batch queue, with the

PROTIPS
By default the batch processor will use the filename for the output file but
occasionallyyoumightwanttotemporarilychangeit.Thisusuallyhappenswhen
youarecreatingseveralcombinationofthesamefileforlayerprocessingwithin
yourimagingapplication.Tochangethenamesimplyovertype/appendthetitle
fieldonthebatchprocessortabthenhitShortcutINSERTtodevelopit.
Housekeeping
Althoughthemainimageeditingandprocessingisnowcomplete,thereareafew
tasksthatIrecommendyoucomplete:
TheRecycle(delete)foldertheimagesassignedfordeletionshouldbechecked
onlasttimeincaseanyhavebeenmistakenlysenttothisgroup.Simplyclickon
the tab to view the group; if you find any that you do not want to delete then
simply move the cursor over the thumbnail and deselect the recycle icon. This
willplacetheimagebackintotheALLtab,whereyoucannowgothroughthe
workflowofrenameandprocessingwithit.Whenyouarehappythatallinthe
Recycle(delete)foldershouldbedeletedsimplychoosethedeleteiconfromthe
toolbar;notethisisapermanentdelete.
BackupItisnowessentialtotakeabackupofyourRAWfiles,eithertoCD/
DVDortoaremovableharddrive.ForaCD/DVDitisbesttousetheburner
applicationtocopythefiles,dontforgetalsotochoosethe.RWSettingsdirectory
underneathasthiscontainsallofyourcolourchanges.Ifyouarebackingofftoa
removable hard drive then it is best to use the RSP drag & drop capability as
1. FirstselectDisplayMode2(ShortcutALT+2)andselectallthumbnails
inyourdirectorybyusingCTRLA.Allshouldbenowhighlighted.
2. HoldingdowntheLHmousebuttonandCTRLkeyatthesametime,
dragthefilesacrosstothelocationoftheharddrivewhereyouwishto
create the backup. A small + symbol will appear over the images
whenyouaredraggingthemtoindicatethatyouhaveaskedforCOPY
and not MOVE (the RSP default). Let go and you will get a status
messageinformingyouofthecopyprogress.
IactuallyMOVEtheRawfilesawayfromtheiroriginallocationandbackthem
uptobothCDandRemovableharddrive.InthiswayIcaneasilykeeptrackof
RAWfilesthatarewaitingtobeprocessed.
Theendorjustthebeginning
