PART B (5 x 16 = 80 Marks)
11. a) A single cylinder vertical petrol engine of total mass 320 kg is mounted upon a steel
chassis and causes a vertical static deflection of 2mm. The reciprocating parts of the engine have
a mass of 24 kg and move through a vertical stroke of 150 mm with simple harmonic motion. A
dashpot attached to the system offers a resistance of 490 N at a velocity of 0.3 m/sec. Determine:
(2) The amplitude of steady state vibration when the driving shaft rotates at 480 r.p.m.
OR

b) (i) Explain with necessary equations, how vibration measuring instruments are characterised
as vibrometer and accelerometer.
(ii) A vibrometer has a natural frequency of 10 Hz and a damping factor of 0.15. Determine the
lowest frequency at which the measured displacement has accuracies with 1% and 3% errors.
(iii) If the above instrument is to be used as an accelerometer what is highest frequency at which
the accuracy is less than 2%.
12. a) State Hamilton's principle and obtain the governing equation of motion of bending
vibration of uniform simply supported beam of length L and constant EI.
OR
b) i) Derive the equation of motion for the system shown in fig. By Lagrangian Method.
(ii) If the values of the system parameters are K = 1000 N/m and m = 10 kg find the natural
frequencies and the normalized Eigen vectors.
13. a) i) Determine the normal functions in transverse vibration for a simply supported beam of
length l and uniform cross section.
ii) Derive the frequency equation of torsion vibrations for a one end fixed and another end free
shaft of length L.
OR
b) A uniform of string of length L and large initial tension S, stretched between two supports, is
displaced laterally through a distance a0 at the centre and it is released at t = 0. Find the equation
of motion for the string.
14. a) Derive the fundamental frequency of uniform cantilever beam using the simple curve
y = cx2.

b) Derive the fundamental frequency for the system shown in fig. By using matrix iteration
Method.
OR
b) Derive an expression for aileron control reversal speed for 2-D wing with aileron attached.
