THE IMAGE OF FIRE IN THE DESCRIPTION

OF THE EUCHARIST BY CLEMENT OF ALEXANDRIA

Alexander Ju. Bratukhin

Reader of World Literature and Culture Department
Perm State National Research University

In this article the passage from the Paedagogus (the Instructor) by Clement of Alexandria (Paed. I, 6,
46, 3) is investigated. In the course of the investigation it is proved, that the words from this passage (
<> the wheat <> through fire) are not to be regarded as a key for understanding of
Clements teaching about the resurrection, and it is disproved the opinion, that this author was under the Epi-
curean influence of language. The Alexandrian presbyter by using this wordplay aspired to attract his read-
ers attention to his topic only to the description of the celestial liturgy and so was found to be a heritor of
the Near-Eastern tradition to ornament a speech by puns, which make easier memorizing of the told.
Key words: Clement of Alexandria; Eucharist; Bible; paronomasia; interpretation; allegory.
