LA 204: Communication in the Work Place

TOPIC: Conducting Meetings

WEEK 7: TUTORIAL ACTIVITY:

Background to the function of Meetings:

Meetings are an important part of working life. As a professional you will be asked to attend or even to
call many meetings throughout your career. Most departments or sections in a workplace have regular
meetings for their employees and teams working within those sections will probably also meet regularly.

It is not only at work that you will be asked to participate in meetings. Clubs, unions, political parties,
schools and even groups preparing tutorial papers find that meetings are an effective way of keeping
members informed, of discussing relevant issues and of identifying problems and developing solutions to
them.

Tutorial Group Activity: Conduct a meeting in 40 minutes!


In a table-group of ONLY 4 to 6 members, you are to do the following:

1. Nominate your team leader (chairperson) and the scriber (secretary).

2. Based on the information, skills and strategies in the lecture on Conducting Meetings, the chairperson
is to lead this meeting.

3. Decide which one of the following groups you are a member of at this meeting, either:

i) The Independence Celebrations Organising Committee

ii) Your LA 204 Tutorial Group

4. The main discussion (agenda) at this meeting is to write up the agenda for either of one of the following
meetings relating to your groups membership:

a) The general meeting of Unitechs Independence Celebration Organising Committee.

b) A meeting of tutorial members to begin a group project.

5. The secretary is to take notes of this meetings discussion and submit it to your tutor (following the
illustrated formats form the lecture or your experience) before 4pm tomorrow (except for DSVY group
submit before 10am next Monday).

NB: There has to be critical and logical consideration in the planning and listing of the order of the agenda for the
respective meeting.
