CHAPTER I

PRELIMINARY

A. Background of The Problem


Simple past tense in the form of tense or form of language in English
that shows the past events marked with the time statement contained in the
sentence and the form of a verb that can distinguish it with tensis or other
sentence form.
Simple past tense is a simple verb form to show that an event occurred
in the past. In simple past tense, the time of the incident (yesterday, last two
days, last year) or period of time (for two months, for a day, for an hour) can
be specified. Simple past tense can also be used to form conditional sentence
type 2. We use the past simple to talk about actions or situations in the past.
The Adverbs of time in this tense are yesterday, last, a week ago, this
morning , last night, yesterday morning, yesterweek, yestermonth, yesteryear,
etc.

DISCUSSIONS

A. DEFINITION PAST TENSE


Past tense verbs are often called the second form of the verb is the past
tense verb in the English language that is used to indicate an event or events
that will happen in the past. The second form of the verb consists of two parts,
the regular verb and irregular verb.

Based on these examples can be concluded that the irregular verb is a verb

B. SIMPLE PAST TENSE


Simple past tense is a simple verb form to show that an event occurred

be specified. Simple past tense can also be used to form conditional sentence
type 2.

We use the past simple to talk about actions or situations in the past.
The Adverbs of time in this tense are yesterday, last.., a week ago, this
morning , last night, yesterday morning, yesterweek, yestermonth, yesteryear,
etc.
Pattern :

-} S+did not +V1 +O/C
?} Did + S+ V1 +O/C?

Example :

The simple past tense is used to talk about finished actions that
happened at a specific time in the past. You state when it happened using a
time adverb.
You form the simple past of a verb by adding -ed onto the end of a
regular verb but, irregular verb forms have to be learnt. There are several
examples of irregular verbs in our Picture It section.

D. FORMULAS AND SAMPLES PASSIVE VOICE - SIMPLE PAST


TENSE
Passive voice in simple past tense is formed by auxiliary verb was /
were and past participle. Subject to passive voice is the object of active voice
with was for single subject, while the for subject is plural. The agent on
passive voice is the subject of active voice.
Here is the passive voice formula in simple past tense:

The above formula applies to transitive verbs. What about intransitive


verb? Sentences with intransitive verbs may be passive if they have a
prepositional phrase.

E. NEGATIVE FORMULA - SIMPLE PAST TENSE


Positive simple past tense using linking verb "be" (was / were) or with
verb-2 other than be as a verb. In simple past tense with be, negative sentence
can be made directly by adding "not" afterwards, but in simple past tense with
verb-2 it is necessary to add dummy auxiliary verb "did", followed by notes,
and verb-2 change to infinitive bare also .

F. THE YES-NO QUESTION SIMPLE PAST TENSE FORMULA


Positive simple past tense can use linking verb "be" (was / were) or with
verb-2 instead of be as a verb. In simple past tense with be, yes-no question
can be directly made by swapping the subject of verb (S) and be; But in
simple past tense with verb-2 besides the need to add dummy auxiliary verb
"did" and verb-2 to change into infinitive bare (base form).

verb "be" (was / were) or verb-2 (Bare infinitive + -ed, -en, -d, -t, -n, or -ne for
regular verb or inconsistent form on irregular verb).
