SOCIAL DANCES AND DANCE MIXERS

Social dance is a major category or classification of dance forms


or dance styles, where sociability and socializing are the primary focuses of
the dancing. Many social dances are partner dances. In fact, quite often when
spoken about social dances, ballroom or other partner dances are kept in mind.

Ballroom dance is a set of partner dances, which are enjoyed both socially and
competitively around the world. Because of its performance and entertainment
aspects, ballroom dance is also widely enjoyed on stage, film, and television.

The following are all generally considered to belong to the world of ballroom dance:

1. RHYTHM dances: Rumba, Cha-Cha, Samba, Mambo, Salsa, Bolero, East Coast Swing, Jive,
West Coast Swing.

2. LATIN dances: Rumba, Cha-Cha, Samba, Mambo.

3. SMOOTH dances: Foxtrot, Tango, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep, Night Club Two-Step.

Dancesport denotes competitive ballroom dancing, as contrasted to social or


exhibition dancing. ... The name was invented to help competitive
ballroom dancing gain Olympic recognition.

A mixer dance, dance mixer or simply mixer is a kind of participation dance in


a social dance setting that involves changing partners as an integral part. Mixing
can be built into the dance choreography or can be structured to occur more
randomly.

Dance etiquette is the set of conventional rules which govern the social behavior of
dance by its participants. Such rules include the way in which the participants should
look and the way in which they approach, dance with and leave their partner.

The waltz (from German: "Walzer") is a ballroom and folk dance, normally in triple time,
performed primarily in closed position.

The cha-cha-ch, or simply cha-cha, is a dance of Cuban origin. It is danced to the


music of the same name introduced by Cuban composer and violinist Enrique Jorrin in
the early 1950s. This rhythm was developed from the danzn-mambo.
