Junior Dragons Den
Championship Winners!
The audience vote helped to determine the winners of
the recently held Junior Dragons Den Championship,
May 6 at the Charles Bailey theatre in Trail. The audience
vote counted for 50% of the valuation for each business
presenting.
Competing in three different divisions, Junior (Grades
College/University Division:
1st place Laurie Ford, Tyler McCauley, Desirae Rob-
inson, Alex Reaburn, The Roving Gatsby, Selkirk College
2nd place Vanessa Legge, Joyful Seeds, Selkirk College
3rd place Mitch Roscoe, Ryan Henderson, Creative

Prize money awarded to the winners must be used to
expand an existing business, launch a new business, or go
toward tuition for post secondary education.
The Junior Dragons Den team at CFDC Trail, is cur-
rently in discussion with several CFDC offices through-
out the province, with the goal of adding more shows in
2018 to continue with their provincial expansion.

km that would benefit from using their Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures
and hay fields are good options.
Zellstoff Celgar will cover the costs of the consultant to perform soil sam-
pling, obtaining government authorization and delivery costs of Celgrow
soil amendment based on access with a large truck/pup combination. Acre-
age should be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two
major components of Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the
pulping process and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treat-
ment facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria are
a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible for spreading
and incorporating Celgrow into their soil.

away on Thursday, May 18, 2017,
at Red Willow Falls, Rio Grande at
the age of 30 years.
Alex was born and raised in Nelson
BC. After graduation he moved
to find work in Fort St. John,
joining his brother Max. Through
childhood, Max and Alex were
always close and often worked and shared a place together.
Up until the time of his death, Alex worked out of Ft. St. John
and sometimes relocated to Grande Prairie for work.
Alex loved outdoors activities fishing, backcountry
skiing, and snowmobiling. He had a great sense of humour
and loved to cheer up co-workers on tough workdays.

West Kootenay Early Years
Website Launched
The West Kootenay Early Years Council is pleased to
announce the launch of their new website www.wkearly-
years.ca The site is for West Kootenay parents and early
years professionals. It is a one stop shop, featuring a cur-
rent calendar of family programs and events for each
community in the region, where parents can find out
about free, or low-cost activities for children aged 06,
from Kaslo to Nelson to the East Shore and across the
West Kootenay.
Community pages include a contact list of community
resources, supports and family programs; as well as a gen-
eral directory of early years resources with topics such as
health, nutrition, development, child care subsidy and
much more.
Early years professionals can access a wide variety of
resources, education, child care forms and funding appli-
cations. Monthly blog posts will include guidance from

He was a pro at picking up an accent, mannerisms and other
identifying quirks of his intended targets. He started this
practice very young by calling his mother at work and posing
as disgruntled clients.
He will be very sadly missed by his mother Virginia Stanford;
father Tom Braumandl; brothers: Max and Kai Braumandl;
girlfriend Emily Wark; great-grandmother Louisa Stanford;
as well as aunties, cousins, niece and nephews, and many
friends in Nelson, Fort St. John, and Grande Prairie.
Celebration of Life ceremonies will be announced at a later
date in both Fort St. John and Nelson.
Alex has left us so young. We will miss him hugely.

The West Kootenay Chapter of the Back Country
Horseman are pleased to be hosting a youth education
event aimed at children between 7 14 years old. This
free event will be covering everything horsey Care,
Feed, Tack-Training.
A highlight of the event is the 100 free horse rides,
which are being donated by Harding Heights Ranch Ltd.
Kids should come prepared to get stuck into the horse
chores, this means wear your jeans or long pants and
boots or covered shoes (no open toed footwear). Parents
you must be present for the duration, you will be required
to sign waivers.
The event takes place at the Trail Horseman Grounds on
Hwy 22A (opposite the airport) on Saturday June 3 from
10 am till 2 pm. Lunch will be available at the cash only
lunch concession. No dogs allowed. Hope to see you there!

Citizen of the Year
The Beaver Valley Citizen of the Year committee takes
great pleasure in announcing The Fruitvale Community
Chest as the recipient of the 2017 Citizen of the Year
award.
This award recognizes outstanding volunteer contribu-
tions to our community and the directors and the many
volunteers of the Fruitvale Community Chest exemplifies
these qualities. Many members have been active since the
80s.
The members work tirelessly especially during the
Christmas season. Beaver Valley Recreation and Fruit-
vale Community Chest host Breakfast with Santa with
the Fruitvale Firemen in the kitchen, cooking fantastic
breakfasts, the Beaver Valley Nitehawks doing the serving
duties and many other volunteers helping out with every-
thing else in-between.
The Community Chests goal is $25,000 per year of
which 50% goes to the Christmas Hampers and the Food
Bank. About 90% of all funds are donated in the local area.

Acclaimed Poet At Peony Festival
And The Nelson Library
Poetry and peonies feature this June in the West Koo-
tenay. Award-winning Ottawa poet and past president of
the Canadian Peony Society Blaine Marchand will jour-
ney west to be guest speaker at the 2017 Peony Show, June
9 11 in Castlegar. With a nod to Marchands poetic fame,
the author will read from his work Thursday, June 8 at 7
pm at the Nelson Public Library.
The National Poetry Contest and Archibald Lampman
Award are among the accolades for Marchand, who, in
addition to six books of poetry and a chapbook, has pub-
lished childrens literature and nonfiction. He has been
widely published in literary magazines and poetry anthol-
ogies and is active in the literary world: he is a past presi-
dent of the League of Canadian Poets and cofounded of
the Canadian Review, Sparks magazine, the Ottawa Inde-
pendent Writers and the Ottawa Valley Book Festival. He
was a monthly columnist for Capital XTRA, an LGBTQ
community paper, for nine years.
In 2015 a reporter for the Central Experimental Farm
newsletter, Mary Ann Smythe, wrote about Marchands
affinity for plants and poetry: When Blaine speaks of
gardening the serenity of weeding, the joy of building a
garden or discovering a heritage plant he paints a vivid
picture. His words have the power to persuade, to evoke a
long forgotten scent or touch, to relive a childhood mem-
ory. When Blaine speaks its from his poets soul.
At the Library, Marchand will read from his most recent
books: Aperture, The Craving of Knives, and My Head,
Filled with Pakistan. He will also read from a collection-
in-progress, Where You Dwell.

Indian Taco Dinner Supports
Selems Children Fund
Sinixt Elder Marilyn James is hosting an Indian Taco
fundraiser for the Selems Children Fund on Sunday, June
4, 5 to 8pm in the Nelson United Church basement.
Selem is originally from Eritreia and has made Nelson
her home, with the assistance of the Kootenay Refugee
Coalition. Her children are still in Ethiopia, waiting for
the Canadian government to approve their reunification
with Selem.
The Selems Children Fund was established by a group
of Selems friends. We raise money to assist Selems chil-
dren with food, rent and schooling while they wait.
This is a family friendly event and there is level access
and no stairs. Tickets are sliding scale, adults $15 - $25
and kids under 12 are $10. All profits will be donated to
the fund.

 Banding Together 2017
Then Nelson Community Band is hosting a mass band
festival in Nelson from June 2 4 and you are invited to
enjoy a free concert in the park on Sunday, June 4. Bring
your own chairs or blankets to enjoy this musical delight
in the fresh outdoors!
Over 100 musicians from concert bands from around
the Kootenays will converge in Nelson for this opportu-
nity. For most musicians, this will be their first opportu-
nity to perform in a band of such size. Many musicians
have never had the opportunity to perform in an ensem-
ble with a bassoon, French horns or oboe. Some small
community bands only have one person in a section,
so a trombone player might not get anyone else playing
their part. This is a special opportunity to share and learn
from a multitude of musicians. In addition, each band
will retain the scores of all the pieces being played, bol-
stering their music libraries.
In addition to the host Nelson Community Band
directed by Laura Johnson, Banding Together 2017 wel-
comes six other bands from many other historic area cit-
ies. Working closely on the event and attending en masse
is Slocan Valley Community Band under the direction
of Gail Elder. From the East Shore comes the Many Bays
Band led by Donnie Clark. From the East Kootenays we
welcome Kimberley Band, directed by Ian Ferrie, Cres-
ton Band under the baton of Monte Anderson and musi-
cians from the Cranbrook Community Concert Band.
We are also looking forward to meeting members of
Revelstoke Community Band and their guest conductor
from Calgary.
This intensive weekend of rehearsal takes place at LVR
high school, where each of the directors will conduct the
entire band in two pieces of their choice. All the musi-
cians have practiced the music ahead of time, learning
the intricacies of the pieces, but this weekend is about
bringing those weeks of rehearsal into sharp focus to
play together. However, all work and no play is no fun;
Friday night registration will welcome the visitors with a
nibble and a drink and on Saturday night musicians and
guests will sit down to a wonderful meal catered by the
Daybreak Rotary Club, using the brand new kitchen at
the Rod and Gun Club. More rehearsal on Sunday morn-
ing will see everyone ready to play the 2 pm concert at
Lakeside Park (or LVR if the weather is wet.)
The Banding Together 2017 committee has been work-
ing hard for months to bring this dream to reality. They
have not worked alone: the community support has been
overwhelming. Grants from BC Arts Council and the
RDCK areas A, B and H have helped immensely. In addi-
tion the Capitol Theatre, Columbia Basin Trust, CIBC
Wood Gundy, Nelson & District Credit Union and Heri-
tage Credit Union have all supported this artistic ven-
ture. Several private donors were very generous as well,
eager to see an event of this scope happening in Nelson.
Nelson Box Office and Hall Printing have helped with
our preparations, as has the City of Nelson, School Dis-
trict #8 and the Nelson Chamber of Commerce. All of
this to promote concert band music in the region, in the
communities where the bands are visiting from and here
within Nelson.
