EXPLORER 8 Interesting Facts

I was born in Giovanni Caboto in Italy in
1450. At 11, I moved to Venice to learn sailing and
navigation from seamen and merchants. I married
Mattea in 1474 and had three sons: Ludovico, Sancto
and Sebastiano-lucky they want to be explorers like
me. In 1476, I began conducting trade in the eastern
Mediterranean. Unfortunately, I ran into financial
trouble and had to leave Venice in 1488.

In 1495, I moved to Bristol, England, with my

family. My hopes were down but I decided to keep on
sailing because of Bartolomeu Dias and Christopher
Columbus's explorations. I wanted to seek out and find
new lands for England!

INTRODUCTION TO
MY LIFE
MY FIRST VOYAGE

I was granted by King Henry VII of England to sail in

search of a shorter western trade route to Asia and land
claimed by Christian Monarchs. At that time, England was
anticipating to find new lands to claim as their colonies.
I set the sail of my ship "Matthew" in May 20th, 1497 from
Bristol with a crew of 18 men. I started sailing west of
Europe in hope to reach Asia's Northeast coast.

Eventually, I landed on the shore of a peculiar-

looking land. First thing I noticed was there were signs of
habitation, but there was no one around! So, I explored the
parts I could walk to. I took the land in the name of King
Henry VII. Not to forget my roots, I lifted both English and
Venetian flags. Then I returned to Bristol in 1497. 20/05/1497

I later found out that the land I a!

explored was called Southern Labrador, the *That's

island of Newfoundland/Cape Breton Island.

I would consider this voyage successful

because I discovered New England. With my
fishing skills, I also found the cod fish which
led to Newfoundlands fishing industry later.
Moreover, I found cloths, caps and lace
points which would be valuable in the
English market.

MY SECOND VOYAGE

After successfully coasting the shores of

Newfoundland and Labrador, I wanted to meet
the inner people who habitat the region. So in
May 1498, I took my ship west across the North
Atlantic once again. There were 5 ships and
around 200 men, much larger crew than last
time. This time, to Cipangu, an island in Japan.

*This voyage caused the disappearance of Cabot. Though he got a review

letter patent that gave him the right for help, this time he ships were lost and

only 1 returned to Bristol. He was never seen ever again.

INTERESTING
FACTS
Cabot was the second European to find North America

(after Christopher Columbus)

Cabots 1947 voyage became the basis of English claims

to North America.

His expeditions proved the existence of a shorter route

across the northern Atlantic Ocean, which would later

facilitate the establishment of other British colonies in

North America.
