5. Purpose This qualification is for persons working in the field of Drafting. Persons with this
of the qualification qualification have a sound theoretical knowledge and competence to perform work at
supervisory level in the above field.
Qualification requirements
Credits gained for a particular unit may be used only once to meet the requirements
of the qualification.

UNIT TITLE Apply basic drawing concepts
2. Draw two dimensional (2D) Two dimensional (2D) drawings produced incorporating all
drawings relevant components of (2D) drawings, using standard line
types, line thicknesses, line darkness, development
techniques and standard procedures as per the type of
the drawing.

Elements of this unit are applicable when producing two dimensional (2D)drawings and three
dimensional (3D) drawings relevant to a given discipline or sub discipline
Common standard components of a drawing may include, title panel, Information panel,
key, orientation, outlines and may vary from organization to organization
Title panel may indicate, job title, job number, institute emblem, drawing title, drawing reference
number, major scale and sub scales, date drawn, name/s of person who designed, drawn,
checked and approved

Information panel may include revision scheduled date, nature of revision, revision references,
notes if any, name of the person who has approved
Standard procedures pertaining to two dimensional (2D) drawing may include selection of
drawing size, units, scales, accuracy limits, text styles, text height, dimension styles, components
to be drawn in the drawing in addition to the common standard components
Standard components of specific three dimensional (3D)drawings may vary from the type of
drawing to be drawn as relevant to any major discipline such as buildings, civil, mechanical ,
electrical and also as relevant to sub disciplines such as Highways, Irrigation, Electronic and

Detail drawings of R.C.C. may include length of laps, curtailment details, length of all types of
reinforcement bars, types of reinforcements with bar diameters, number of bars and bar marks,
location/ position of the bars in the structure and shape of bars according to the structural
standards, symbols and detailing methods
Also, it may include, concrete grades, strength of reinforcement bars, details of expansion joints,
special structural details and construction details as specified by the structural designer.
R.C.C. drawings may present structural details relevant to the structures in building, irrigation,
water supply and drainage and highways

Detailed drawings of steel structures
Detail drawings of steel structures may include steel structures detail drawing drawn included
elevations, sections with type of steel sections, sectional dimensions, number of members
in an element, component fixing angles, position and method, component and node labels and
relevant scales as per design details, nodes, fixing and connection methods, component
details, special details and relevant scales as per the design details
Steel structures detail drawings may include bracing details required for the stability of the
main steel structure and relevant scale as per design details.
Steel structures detail drawing may also include, legends & tables, title panel, abbreviations and
symbols, notes containing types of steel section, welding details and steel protection details
according to British standard En 4360 for grade 43 steel.
Steel structures detail drawings may apply to Buildings, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical
engineering fields. Drawings may be prepared in drawing office or at work site in the form of
scaled drawings or free hand sketches.
Type of steel sections may include I-section, Angle section, Box section, H-section, pipe section,
T- section, C-section, U-section, lip channel section and solid bars of different cross sections.
Sectional dimensions may include standard cross sectional length, width/height and thickness.
Number of members in an element may be indicated by numerical value or graphical form in a
drawing.
Components fixing methods may include welding, riveting, fixing with nut and bolts and
anchoring techniques such as fixed and free end supports, roller supports and pin supports
Component details may consist of dimensions relevant to components shapes, thickness and
type of components such as fish plate, gusset plate, shoe plate, base plate, wedge,
spacer, angle cleats, brackets and webs.
Special details may include clear covers/ tolerances, clearances, expansion or contraction details
of the steel structure.
Bracing details may indicate any type of steel sections or tie rods introduced for maintaining the
stability and minimizing deformation of main steel structure.
These drawings may have special brief notes on timber grades and types of timber as well
Layout drawings for formwork
Layout drawings for form work may provide details of vertical structures (R/C walls, column
centre, materials indicated), details of horizontal structures (beams, slab -sleeves, openings, etc)
and detail drawings of lining and support structures, Joist, props, etc.(with spacing)
Detail drawings for excavation, embankment and earth work support may apply to
irrigation, buildings, highway, and landscaping. These may be prepared in the form of sketches in
the field or as a standard drawing in the office.

Detailed setting out drawings may include separate drawings to each level/ floor, separate
drawings to each major work. These drawings may be,
Water supply drawings may also include, location reference chart for similar construction area
as per details given by the designer, line paths using the standard line types and standard
symbols pertaining to the components of the service line and as per details given in the design
report.
Water distribution line drawing includes line paths, fitting details, man holes, chambers, metering
and gauging points
Water supply and distribution system may include water distribution from source of water such as
water treatment plant/ water tank/ pump house to domestic or industrial locations.
Detail drawings for soil and wastewater may include, building plan with toilets, soil lines,
waste lines
Invert levels of manholes and pipe lines, longitudinal section along the pipe line, man hole
schedule with inverts and top level of the man hole covers
In preparing detail fire system drawings (Fire Detection system), it may be necessary to,

Building permit approval drawings may consist of a proposed new building or a proposed
alteration for an existing building
Components of the building permit approval drawing may include plan, front elevation, left and/
or right elevations, sections with heights and sections to show different floor levels as where
applicable including section line with appropriate titles room names, dimensions, door and
window locations, eave lines and roof outline, foundation details, door and window schedule,
scales, notes and title bar with site plan with north direction, position of building outline, distances
from boundaries and road centre line, position of septic tank, soakage pit, waste water pit and

Components of standard water supply detail drawing may include, building plan with toilets
and water requirement points using standard symbols, isometric view with pipe sizes and flow
direction, schedule of fittings required for the water supply system as per specifications provided
by design engineer

Components of standard soil & waste water detail drawing may include, building plan with
toilets, locations of manholes, schedule with manhole type, number, size, invert level, cover level,
diameter and type of pipe lines with flow direction, longitudinal section along the pipe line with the
given gradient or invert levels
Relevant authority may be National Water supply and drainage board, Local administrative
authority, relevant fire authority, Labour department, Ceylon Electricity board, Environmental
authority, Defense Ministry.
Components of the standard location drawing may include key diagram of the whole or part
of the project, location of the building or structure representing the contour and survey details of
the site and feasibility study details including required dimensions, north directions, main titles
and sub titles of the structure and levels
Components of the standard site lay out drawing may incorporate North direction,
boundaries, location of roads, existing buildings and structures, temporary buildings and other
partitions, temporary access, temporary lighting system, sewer and waste management system,
water supply and drainage lines in site.
Components of the standard general arrangement drawing may include plan, elevation, and
sections, with dimensions, levels and angles of all structural and non structural members of a

Architectural component drawing may include, the plan, section, cross section of a structure
or a component with required internal and external dimensions, name of elements or portions of

As - built drawings may include, elevations, sections as necessary with key plans, legends,

drains, gullies, steps, sign boards, lamp posts and sculptures.
Service points may include sprinkler points, drinking water points, water outlets, man
holes, gullies, catch pits, pump rooms, electrical lighting points and power outlets
Service points may be indicated by standard symbols used in landscaping.
Paving detail drawing drawings drawn according to design of landscape designer to include
paving material types, sizes and method of paving and pattern given by the designer.
Paving detail drawings drawn indicated grooves provided in the paving area according to
the type of paving materials, colours and textures and instruction given by the designer.
Paving material types may include rubble, wire cut bricks, pebbles, sand, metal chips,
concrete tiles, terracotta, timber and inter locking blocks with different colours, tints and
textures.
Different symbols, hatch patterns, and abbreviations may be used to indicate different
paving materials.
Drawing drawn also included all service points, cross sections as specified by the
designer, soil types, compaction details and concrete based details with dimensions.

Bubble diagrams are usually drawn as a freehand sketch and brief note included in the sketch

Preliminary sketch - When developing the Preliminary sketch it may be necessary to consider
clients requirements and regulations.
Develop proposal may include a study of building regulations and a topography of the context

RANGE STATEMENTS
All elements of competence in this unit take place at small to large highway construction sites. All
necessary details to be given by the engineer.
Elaboration Of Terms
Detail drawing of infrastructure may include plan view, sectional view, elevation of
infrastructures or detail portion (abutment, wing wall & piers) of an infrastructure and foundation
of the structure if necessary.
Reinforcement details may include type of bars, size, bar length, no of bars, sectional elevation
and longitudinal sections indicating the location of reinforcement in structure with dimensions and
material properties such as strengths and finishing details.
Foundation details may include plan view, sectional view and elevation of the foundation
indicating the location of reinforcement in structure with dimensions and material properties such
as strengths and finishing details.
General plan of bridges should also indicate general dimensions, layout details, special notes,
legends and side elevation with title panel according to standards of the Road Development
Authority
Geological data may include standard geological symbols, abbreviations, location of strata or
dimensions respect to the datum or T.B.M. (Temporary Bench Mark) level, ground water level

Road construction detail drawings may indicate road survey details, existing and proposed

Road survey drawing may include general profile of existing roads / bridge structures,
telephone and electrical & water services, draining system, chainage, levels, cross sections,
TBM and standard scales.
Standard components of highway engineering drawing may include legend, note, title and

person involved in designing, drafting, approving L.S. and C.S. detail drawings (duct and

Elaboration of terms
Drawings of Dams/bunds may constitute typical section of the dam/ bund with details, plan of
dam/bund along the longitudinal section with details and cross sections (at required
stations) with sectional details
Typical section of the dam/ bund with details may include existing ground profile with
geological data and levels with respect to the given datum in MSL (Mean Sea Level), location of
the typical section of the dam/ bund, up stream and down stream slopes, dam/ bund parameters
and components with dimensions
Plan of dam/bund along the longitudinal section with details may include plan with bed
contours, place of sluice/ spills/ anicuts, longitudinal section of the dam / bund with existing
ground levels, natural features, and designed levels
Cross sections (at required stations) with sectional details may include sections at

specified by the designer
Canal parameters may include dimensions, design discharges, bed width, full supply depth,

Blocking out plans may indicate, contour details of the land, field and their sub canals, natural

This unit may be assessed at field/ drawing office. The competencies of this unit may be
assessed in terms of workplace performance
Critical Aspects
Perform all elements of this unit according to the standards practices in the engineering
draughtsman discipline as indicated in the performance criteria of each element.
Assessment conditions
UNDERPINNING KNOWLEDGE
Introduction to plane table survey and instruments and tools used for the survey.
Calculations of co-ordinates

Recording of data obtained from leveling
Introduction of Datum, National Bench Mark, Mean Sea Level and guidance to find
these locations from a survey plan/ construction plan

Mathematical skills to solve algebraic sums and equations, trigonometric functions, and
co-ordinate geometry problems
Ability to take linear measurement using standard tapes such as off set measurements,
oblique measurements, check measurements as per standardized practice
Ability to take angular measurements using survey instruments such as basic Theodolite
DESCRIPTOR This unit covers the competencies required to conduct preliminary site
investigations and provide necessary consultancy to clients, Analyze information
on requirements of clients, Liaise with legal authorities and other professionals
ensuring safe working practices.

2. Perform consultancy activities 2.1 Actual construction to be performed determined as per the

All elements of competencies in this unit is to be taken place at construction site of buildings
falling under category c (Of UDA Regulations) where tender procedure & formal contractual
\arrangements are not required

Material cost may vary according to the type, dimensions, quality, trade name, and
specifications given by the designer
Labour cost may vary according to the skill categories and levels, relevant to the disciplines of
civil, mechanical and electrical
Sketches and plans may include floor area, F.A.R., voltage, wattage, plot coverage, ratio,
heights and other dimensions, proposed water supply, drainage, soil, storm water, waste water
disposal plans and sketches.
Various sources may be, data obtained from authorities such as weather data of past periods
from Department of meteorology, geological data and land details from Department of Survey,
Construction rules and regulations from Urban Development Authority, Municipal and provincial
councils, environmental rules and regulations from Central Environmental Authority, reclamation
details, rules and regulations from Land Reclamation Board, Historical information from
Department of Archaeology and other required information on facilities from Ceylon Electricity
Board, telecommunication organizations, Water Supply and Drainage Board, department of
labour and Ministry of Transport etc.
Required Information may include, ground existing levels, survey plans, physical
information of the site, soil test reports, other facilities and clearance reports.
Ground existing levels may be indicated or represented as a contour plan or ground spot levels
on a survey plan.
Physical information may include, site appearance, vicinity, soil conditions, land marks, trees,
canales, roads, existing structures with locations and dimensions, condition of the existing
structures, ground water level, existing pipe lines and other relevant details.
Other facilities may include electricity facility, telephone facility, water and drainage facilities etc.
Clearance reports may include permits given by local authorities and national authorities as
required

Other information may be, pre conditions, terms of conditions agreed with the client and legal
conditions requested by government authorities.
Quality may be the quality of work done such as dimensions, shapes, finishes etc. and quality of
materials use for the construction

relevant site tests or laboratory tests as required by the clients requirements or specifications

The candidate will have access to Plans, sketch books, field book, required tools and
instruments
The candidate will be permitted to refer to information provided by the clients and legal
authorities, Printer user manual and user manuals of surveying or leveling instruments (to be
provided if the instrument is new to the candidate).
