Observation 6:
a. Science
II. Grade:
a. Kindergarten
III. Students:
a. 9 girls, 8 boys
IV. Setting:
a. Kindergarten classroom at The Learning Gate
b. Ages: 5-6 years old classroom, 17 students, 1 head teacher, 1 teacher aid
V. Pre-Observation:
a. Even though science wasnt my best subject in high school, I tried to have a

positive outlook on what the kids would be learning. I figured it wasnt going to

be nothing too difficult because they are only kindergarteners. I believe that as

long as Mrs. Sharon engages the children then they will enjoy it also. Science can

be a fun subject to teach the children if you include experiments or hands on

activities. This will help the children understand better and want to do more

lessons with science. The science that happens in early childhood classrooms is

often focused on the study of living thingsclassroom pets, plants, and nature

walksand it neglects the physical sciences. In too many classes science is not

taught at all.
VI. Analysis:
a. After reading what NAEYC had to say about science being in classrooms, I began

to get excited because I was wondering what experiment she will do with the

kindergarteners. After they did their morning meeting, Mrs. Sharon explained that

they will be testing a regular can of soda and a diet soda to see which one will

float or sick! She set up a huge display to get all the childrens attention and then

proceeded to ask the children what they think will happen. The children were

eager to see which soda will sink or float and why. After putting both the sodas

in, they realized that the diet soda actually floated. Immediately after the children
saw both sodas, they asked why one sunk and the other floated. After much

discussion, the answer was that the soda sunk because it was filled with more

density then the diet soda.

VII. Recommendations:
a. If I could recommend anything, then it would have to be to introduce science to

the kindergarteners more often. I was quite surprised at how much they enjoyed

learning about science. I would introduce something about science once a week so

the children will know more about. Mrs. Sharon was just doing science with them

because it was the science fair and they needed to do an experiment. Science can

be about the weather and clouds or the dirt outside. I believe that either way the

children will enjoy it.

VIII. Post-observation:
a. After sitting in the classroom, during the science lesson I can say that I actually

enjoyed it! The best part was seeing the kids get excited when the soda would

float or sink! It was like they didnt know soda can float, well they didnt! They

asked questions and some even answered them for their classmates. After the

lesson, the kids wondered when the next science lesson will be and Mrs. Sharon

was blown away by their response to this lesson.
