Dear Grade 4 Parents,

The school year is quickly coming to a close. While the students are counting down the days to the end of the
school year, my summer staff and I will begin counting the days until the first day of school. We will spend our
summer planning for the 2017-2018 school year. In order to complete scheduling, I will need some information
from you. Please complete the attached band and choir form and return to the school office by June 9.

In addition to elective options in band and choir, I would like to highlight some of the changes your child will
experience moving from grade 4 to 5.

Students in grade 5 will now go from a self-contained classroom to a departmentalized setting. What does this
mean? Students will have more opportunities, freedoms, and teachers. The next two years are set up to prepare
your child for a high school setting while still enjoying the accountability of an elementary school. Elective
classes will meet on a Day 1 and Day 2 schedule. Classes on the rotation include band, choir and physical
education year-round. Health, art, and keyboarding classes are each offered for one semester on a Day 1 and
Day 2 schedule.

Students will continue to meet in a homeroom setting each morning and afternoon. They will attend Mass and
special events in their homeroom group. Outside of homeroom, the students will move from room to room for
classes throughout the eight-period day. Band and art classes will be held in the Cathedral High School
building and physical education classes in the Holy Trinity gym. All other classes will be held on the second
floor of St. Anthony Elementary School.

Grade 5 students will have the addition of band and/or choir classes. Your child can participate in both band
and choir or chose one. If your child choses one class, he or she will have a study hall on the opposite day.
Summer band lessons are encouraged for all students. Information on the band meeting and lessons was sent
home earlier.

Students will change clothes for physical education classes beginning in grade 5. Uniforms will be purchased
through NUACS. Order forms were sent home earlier. The uniforms can be used in both grades 5 and 6.

The students will have more opportunities to participate in clubs and organizations. Currently, Student Council,
Math Masters, and Robotics are offered to students. Athletically, the students can participate in Super Spikers
and Super Hoopers. Sign-up materials will be sent home prior to the start of each season.

Please feel free to call or email me if you have additional questions about your childs transition to grade 5.

Have a wonderful summer break and see you in the fall.
