Documentation for Sarah Gilbert

George Older Sr. probably was born about 1804 in Sussex, England.(1) George
Older immigrated to Ontario, Canada, in 1835 with his wife, Sarah Gilbert, and their
two children.(2)

From Sylvia McMaster in England, March 14, 2006:

"I know that when we last corresponded you asked me about George Older and Sarah
Gilbert. I know that they married in Burpham on the 7th November 1832 and
emigrated in 1836. They had Samuel Clarence in 1831, Emily in 1833, George in 1835
and Frances Elizabeth in Ohio in 1843. According to the records I have, George was a
child of Samuel Older and Elizabeth Bishop. He was baptised on the 3rd January 1813
and died in Hamilton, Ohio on the 3rd July 1849."

Samuel Older and Thomas Older, assumed to be brothers of George Older, had boarded
the ship England at Portsmouth, England, on May 8, 1832, and disembarked on June 15,
1832, in Quebec, Canada.(3)

Samuel, Thomas, and George Older were part of the Petworth Emigration Scheme. The
main concept of the Petworth Scheme was to pay people to leave England and to settle
in Canada.(4)

One very short letter written or dictated by George Older at Hamilton, Upper
Canada, to John Drewitt at Little Peppering, Burpham, West Sussex, dated 7 July 1836,
was published as letter #109 in English Immigrant Voices, Labourers' Letters from Upper
Canada in the 1830s along with some additional information as follows: "George Older,
an agricultural labourer, his wife, and two children were sent by the parish of
Wisborough Green, His wife's name may have been Sarah Gilbert. Drewitt gave Older
'a very good character' to take to Upper Canada (see letter 122). Sockett included this
brief extract from a letter written as the family passed through Hamilton on their way
west."(5)

"Drewitt had probably helped fund the Olders' emigration. The Brighton
Gazette on 10 November 1836 noted that 'Mr. Drewitt' of the 'Arundel Banking Firm'
had sent out tare, turnip, and beet seeds to another emigrant, Mr Holmwood, formerly
of Angmering and now living near Dudas, Upper Canada; the seeds had produced 'fine
crops.'(6) Sockett was Reverent Thomas Sockett, the rector of Petworth, and the one
who devised and organized the Petworth Immigration Scheme, "under the patronage of
George O'Brien Wyndham, the third Earl of Egremont, an aristocratic landowner noted
for his benevolence towards the poor."(7)
The source of the letter by George Older was Continuation of Letters from Sussex
Emigrants . . . Written in 1836[1837], 8. The following is an "Extract of a Letter from
George Older, who emigrated to Canada, in the ship Heber, which sailed from
Portsmouth, April 23rd. 1836, to Mr. Drewitt, of Peppering, Sussex:"
 Sir,
There has been a great deal of fault found, about the living on board ship;
but I say, we had a plenty of every thing to eat, and to drink, and that was very
good.
Hamilton, July 7th.

"All we know of the later history of this family is what William Robinson wrote of them
in letter 122 in October 1836, when they were in Delaware Township working for
him."(8)
"While in Lower Canada at Quebec, Robinson had purchased lot 2 concession 5
in Ekfrid Township. Sockett published his letter with its offer of employment on the
inside and back covers of a volume of letters printed in advance of the departure of the
Diana in 1837." The letter by William Robinson, Ekfrid Park, near Delaware, London
District, Upper Canada, to the Reverend Thomas Sockett, Chairman, Emigration
Society, Petworth, Sussex, dated 14 October 1836, includes the following paragraph
about the family of George Older:

"I have now living with me, a man from the same country, who has a wife
and two children, they came out this season. I have engaged with them upon the
terms before mentioned; they are at present in my house, waiting the completion
of a cottage I am putting up for them. His name is George Older, and had with
him a very good character from John Drewitt, Esq.; and although they have been
with me but a short time, I have every reason to believe, that they are deserving
the praise that gentleman has bestowed on them. They are contented and happy;
and according to their deserts, so shall I consider it my duty to contribute to their
welfare. He informs me that he is personally known to you."(9)

Another letter included in English Immigrant Voices provides information about

several men who are thought to be related to George Older. "In April 1861, in her
seventieth year, Sarah Redman decided to write down some of the events of her life.
Life and death on the frontier, the hardships of settling, natural disasters, and much
moving about in searcch of a living gave her dramatic subject matter. The later part of
her 'Epitome' covering 1861-7 is in the form of a journal with dated entries, and she
seems to have used some sort of written record for her early years. One of the events
she described was the arrival of the 1832 party from Wisborough Green. The pertinent
passages are quoted below.(10)

"In August 1832 there came out to us a party from our own village, Wisbo Green,
six families (sent by the parish) consisting of:
Mr. Burberry & wife & 8 children 10
Mr. Older & wife & 7 Do 9
Mr. Thair & wife & 2 Do 4
Mr. Saunder & wife & 3 Do 5
Mr Smart & wife & 2 Do 4
Mr. Tribe & wife & 2 Do 4
George Hook
Thomas Older } single men 3
Ch Wuler [Wheeler] } __

 We put them all into our Bickerstaff house for a few days. Provided a
good dinner and supper for them and gave them suficient for breakfast. Captain
Hale came with them. He staid with us two weeks and was very pleased. During
that time Mr. T. Evershed came (an old friend of ours). Ought to have said that a
man of the name of Charles Wheeler came two weeks before. The Chollory
[cholera] was ragin when they arrived at Monteral so that they were greatly
exposed, and were not suffered to land at Cleveland, but had to hire wagons and
go to Pittsburg; And thence down the Ohio river to Marietta. But they all enjoyed
good health. The second week after they were here Mrs Launder [Saunder?] and
I took sick. She had one babe die. but after a few weeks we recovered.
Then Mr. Thair took sick and Mrs. Burberry, who both died. Mr. And Mrs.
Grapham came on soon after - with seven children, one died. They all continued
here a few months & were doing well. We let them have every thing we could.
but they soon became dissatisfied and went off to Lancaster."

The following information was provided by the authors of English Immigrant

Voices immediately after the Sarah (Redman) Knight passage:
"Some of the emigrants who went to Knight's settlement at Nelsonville must
have reported unfavourable. The Hampshire Telegraph of 3 March 1834 printed part of a
letter from Knight explaining that the first part, which was omitted, contained Knight's
refutation of 'malignant charges' made by people who had emigrated from Wisborough
Green and Pulborough.
James Knight died on 26 August 1836 of a 'nervous fever.' Sarah remarried and
out lived her second husband. She spent her last years in Athens County, recording in
1863 that she was the last surviving member of the party of 1821 immigrants from
England still living there. She continued to write in her journal until July 1867, one
month before she died."(11)

Samuel and Thomas Older continued on to Athens County, Ohio, after their
arrival in Canada whereas George Older remained in Canada with his family for a time.
Samuel Older, Thomas Older, and a William Older were all heads of households in the
1840 census of York Township, Athens County, Ohio.(12)
Samuel Older's baptismal record lists his parents as Samuel Holder & Elizabeth
Bishop.(13) Samuel Older died August 8, 1857, in Grand Rapids, Wood County,
Ohio.(14)
Thomas Older was christened November 12, 1809, in Wisborough Green, Sussex,
England.(15) The death certificate of Thomas Older gives his mother's name as
Elizabeth Bishop.(16) Unfortunately, no baptismal record has been found for George
Older nor has one been found for William Older.(17) It is upon this scenario that the
parents of George Older are assumed to be Samuel Older Sr. and his wife Elizabeth
Bishop.

Samuel Older Sr. was born about 1768 in England and probably died in Sussex,
England.(18) He married Elizabeth Bishop on April 17, 1790, in Salehurst, Sussex in
England.(19) Elizabeth also was born in England and probably died in Sussex,
England.(20)
Samuel Older Sr. and Elizabeth Bishop are thought to be the parents of George
Older and the following eleven children:
1) Elizabeth Older was born 1790 in Salehurst, Sussex, England.(21)
 2) Samuel Older was born in 1792 in Salehurst, Sussex England. He died August
8, 1857, in Grand Rapids, Wood County, Ohio.(22)
3) Jonathan Older was born in 1796 in Salehurst, Sussex, England.(23)
4) Hannah Older was born in 1799 in Salehurst, Sussex, England.(24)
5) Mary Older was born on June 6, 1801, in Wisborough Green, Sussex,
England.(25)
6) John Older was born on July 17, 1803, in Wisborough Green, Sussex,
England.(26)
7) Nanny Older was born December 15, 1805, in Wisborough Green, Sussex,
England.(27)
8) James Older was born November 2, 1807, in Wisborough Green Sussex,
England.(28)
9) Thomas Older was born October 23, 1809, in Wisborough Green, Sussex,
England. He died November 17, 1887, in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio.(29)
10) William Older was born between 1812 and 1815 in Slinfold, Sussex, England.
He died October 21, 1897, in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio.(30)
11) Barnet Older was born May 1, 1815, in Slinfold, Sussex, England. He died
October 21, 1897, in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio.(31)

George Older married Sarah Gilbert in England.(32) No information on her

parents is known. George Older and Sarah Gilbert were the parents of five children:
1) Emily Older, a daughter, was born October 11, 1833, in England.(33) She
married Andrew Harrington on August 28, 1853, in Ross County, Ohio.(34) Emily
(Older) Harrington died in 1925 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.
2) George Older Junior, the oldest son, was born September 13, 1835, "on the
ocean".(35) George married Mary Summers Humphrey on January 1, 1860, in Vermilion
County, Illinois.(36) George enlisted for service during the Civil War on April 26, 1864,
at Danville, Illinois. He served in Company K of the 135th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer
Infantry. The State if Illinois website lists him OLDEN,
as: George, Private,Danville, Jun
6, 1864, Mustered out Sep 28, 1864. He filed for a military pension in 1890. The National
Archives cannot locate any of his records. George Jr. died September 26, 1920, in
Portland, Oregon.(37)
3) Samuel Clarence Older, the youngest son, was born January 15, 1837, in
Ontario, Canada.(38) He married Jane Eliza Baird on August 14, 1856, in Ross County,
Ohio.(39)
4) Mary Jane Older was born in 1840 in Ohio. She married Johnson Coe on
October 13, 1867 in Athens County, Ohio. (40)
5) Fanny Elizabeth Older was born August 12, 1843, in Ohio.(41) She died
January 11, 1914, in Russelville, Brown County, Ohio. She married William M. G.
Wamsley on February 20, 1867, in Bentonville, Adams Co., Ohio.(42)
Sarah (Gilbert) Older died sometime between 1843 and 1847.(43) George Older
then married Deborah Ann (Boyer) Nye on October 2, 1847, in Ross County, Ohio.(44)
She was the daughter of Richard Boyer and Rachel Frew.(45) Deborah Ann Boyer was
born March 10, 1828, in Ohio.(46) She married first Jacob Nye on February 19, 1843, in
Ross County, Ohio.(47)
George Older and Deborah Nye were the parents of one child:
1) Margaret Louisa Ann Older was born May 26, 1849, in Cincinnati, Hamilton
County, Ohio. She died March 22, 1927, in Little River, Rice County, Kansas. She
married Truman Myron Van Norman on February 19, 1868, at Henderson County,
Illinois.(48)
Shortly after the birth of Ann, George Older died July 3, 1849, in Cincinnati,
Ohio, during the Cholera epidemic.(49) The Lancaster, Ohio, newspaper reported his
death. The obituary gave George's age as 45 years old.
All six of the children of George Older Sr. were living in different households at
the time of the 1850 census. No 1850 census record was found for George Older Jr.
Ann Older was living in the Richard Boyer household in 1850.(50) Richard Boyer
was the father of Deborah Boyer Nye, the second wife of George Older.(51) Ann Older
married Truman Myron Van Norman on February 19, 1868, in Henderson County,
Illinois.(52) He was born August 15, 1845, in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.(53)
Margaret Louisa Ann Older died March 22, 1927, in Little River, Rice County,
Kansas.(54) Margaret Luisa Ann was mentioned in the 1918 obituary of Emma Jane
Price as a surviving sister, Anne Van Norman.(55)
George's widow, Deborah A. (Boyer) (Nye) Older, married William Price on
September 10, 1854.(56) Deborah died July 8, 1903, in Norman, Cleveland County,
Oklahoma.(57)
There should be no 1830 or 1850 United States Federal Census records for George
Older. He did not leave England until 1835 and he died in 1849. No 1840 Federal
Census record for George Older has been found as well.

Thank you for your enquiry concerning George Older and his family. One sentence of a
letter from him, written in 1836, was published in Continuation of letters from Sussex
Emigrants... written in 1836, which was published in 1837. There is also a mention of him
in a letter of 1836 to Rev. Thomas Socket, chairman of the Petworth Emigration
Committee, from William Robinson, for whom George was working. The family are
also mentioned in the journal of Sarah Knight, who had emigrated in 1821 to
Nelsonville, Ohio.
All the above are published in English Immigrant Voices, ed. Cameron, Haines, and
McDougall Maude, published in 2000 by McGill-Queen's University Press. A list of all
emigrants under the Petworth scheme, with all the information about them, and the
sources, was published in the companion volume Assisting Emigration to Upper Canada,
The Petworth Project 1832-1837, by Wendy Cameron and Mary McDougall Maude. These
volumes were the fruit of a ten year research project in Canada and England, funded by
the Jackson Foundation, the Jacksons themselves being descended from a family who
emigrated under the Petworth scheme.

years old.

31. Barnet Older's birth date was listed in the IGI along with his baptism., i.e. Barnet
Alder, born 1 May 1815, christened 23 Jul 1815 Slinfold, Sussex, England at Hayes
Independent. Parents were Samuel Alder & Elizabeth. The birth date caculated on his
age at the time of his death was 1 May 1814.
