Documentation for Pritchett Gouty

(04 July 1765 to 12 May 1837)
father of Thomas Gouty
(1802 to 10 June 1863)
(Note: The Gouty name is spelled with the following variations in historical
records Gouty, Gowty, Gootee, Gottee, Goutee, and Goutty. The name will be spelled
Gouty in this writing except when reference is made to an historical record, in which
case it will be spelled as in the original document.)

Pritchett Gouty was born 04 July 1765 in Maryland.(1) Pritchett was a son of
John Gouty and Elizabeth Pritchett.(2) John Gouty was born in 1738 in Dorchester
County, Maryland.(3) John married Elizabeth Pritchett before 17 November 1769.(4) He
died 04 August 1818.(5)Gouty Tree - Jason N. Gouty) Elizabeth Pritchett was the
daughter of Phunback Pritchett and his wife, name unknown.(6) The will of Phunback
Pritchett names Elizabeth Gouty as one of his daughters.(7)
Pritchett Gouty married Mary Griffith, a daughter of Alexander Griffith and his
wife.(8) Mary Griffith was born about 1765 in Caroline County, Maryland.(9) No
marriage record with date of marriage has been found. Alexander Griffith and his wife,
Elizabeth (Unknown), were the parents of 12 children, including Mary Griffith.(10)(will
of AG) The wife of Alexander Griffith is not known other than the name of his wife at
the time of his death was Mary.
A sister of Mary Griffith, Nancy Griffith, married William Todd on 02 June 1798
in Caroline County, Maryland.(11)(6B) A brother of Mary Griffith, Aaron Griffith,
married Nancy Ann Collison on 04 January 1802 in Caroline County, Maryland.(12)(6C)
An Alexander Griffith owned land in Caroline County, Maryland.(13)(7) He was
born about 1745 in Maryland and died between 11 August 1810, when his will was
written, and 05 March 1811 when his will was probated in Caroline County,
Maryland.(14)(8) The 1800 Caroline County, Maryland census record for Alexander
Griffith listed the following: Census-1800 Caroline County, Maryland, 1 male 10-16, 1
male 16-26 and 1 male over 45: 1 female 16-26 and 1 female over 45.(15)UT) (6B) An
Alexander Griffith was a witness to the will of John Stanton of Caroline County,
Maryland, on 06 January 1818 and may have been the brother of Mary
Griffith.(16)(9ABC)
The 1790 Maryland census records list two families named Gouty, both in
Caroline County. Those two families are the ones of Able Gouty and John Gouty. The
census images for those two families are not available so the detail is unknown.(17)(3) It
is likely other records, particularly from Dorchester County, existed for other members
of the Gouty family. Perhaps these records have been lost or for some reason other
Gouty or Gootee families were not recorded. The Able (or Abel) Gouty of the 1790
Caroline County, Maryland, census was the second child and oldest son of John and
Elizabeth (Pritchett) Gouty.(18)
In the 1800 US Census for Maryland, the only Gouty names that appear in
Caroline County are: Abel, John, Zachariah, and Prichard (i.e., Pritchett).(19) Abel,
Zachariah, and Pritchett Gouty were three sons of John Gouty and Elizabeth Pritchett
Gouty.(20)UYT)
Pritchett Goutee is listed at age 26 through 44 in the 1810 census.(21) Prichett
would have been about 35 years old at the time of the 1800 census.(22)(10) The Pritchett
Gouty family in the 1800 census consisted of one male under 10 years of age, possibly a
son named John Gouty who may have been born that year.(23)(11) Also listed are a son
age 10 through 15 whose name is unknown. One male listed as age 26 through 44
should have been Pritchett Gouty. One female is listed as under age 10 and perhaps this
was Elizabeth Gouty who was born 15 December 1796 in Caroline County, Maryland
according to a record in the Family History Library.(24) Also listed is a female age 26
through 44 and this should have been Mary Griffith Gouty, wife of Pritchett.
In the 1810 US Census for Maryland, the only Gouty names that appear in
Caroline County are: Gabril, Thomas, Zachariah, and a P Gouty which we can assume is
Pritchett Gouty.(25) The only information we found about Gabriel Gouty was that he
married a Nancy Griffith on 02 January 1798 in Dorchester County, Maryland.(26)
Gabril Gouty is somewhat of an unknown. He married a Nancy Griffith, possibly
related to Mary Griffith, in January 1798.(27) Perhaps Gabriel Gootee lived in the same
neighborhood as the family of John Gootee.
The Thomas Gouty of the 1810 Maryland, Caroline County, census was not the
same Thomas Gouty as the one who was a son of Pritchett Gouty and Mary Griffith.
The Thomas Gouty of the 1810 Maryland, Caroline County, census was listed as age 16
through 25 and he lived with three females. One female was under 10 years of age, one
was age 26 through 44, and one was 45 and over.(28)
The Pritchett Gouty family in 1810 consisted of 2 males under age 10. These two
males should have been Henry Gouty who was born about 1800 and Thomas Gouty
who was born about 1802. One male age 10 through 15 may have been John Gouty who
was born about 1800. The one female under 10 might have been a Delilah Gouty.
Elizabeth Gouty probably was age 10 through 15 in 1810. The female aged 16 through
25 is unknown and the female aged 26 through 44 should have been Mary Griffith
Gouty.(29)
An evaluation of Federal census records and other data, such as marriage
records, show that Pritchett Gouty and his children moved from Caroline County,
Maryland, to Pickaway County, Ohio, sometime after 1810. Pickaway County was
created in 1810 from portions of Ross, Fairfield, Hocking, and Franklin Counties. Other
neighboring counties are Fayette and Madison. Circleville is the county seat. Pickaway
is a Native American word meaning "man risen from ashes."(30)

Verbatim from the book, but they are as only good as the transcriber.
I'm sure the LOWLY was just misread, or was there another marriage
before Mr. Cheesman?
I noticed one day off on the Pritchard GOWDY marriage, the 30th date
recorded in the book could have been the marriage license date. I have come
across mistakes in this transcibed book before.

Mary Griffith Gouty, the first wife of Pritchett Gouty, died sometime before 30
January 1817 when Pritchett Gouty (i.e., Prichard Gowty) married Mary Donovan in
Pickaway County, Ohio.(31) They were married by John Scott, J.P. Two sons of Pritchett
and Mary Griffith Gouty also married in Pickaway County, Ohio, as did one daughter.
Henry Gouty (i.e., Gowty) married Rebecca Whitsell on 22 October 1823.(32) John

Mary Donovan was born after 1775 in Delaware.(35) Her parents are not known.
The 1820 US Census for Pickaway Township, Pickaway County, Ohio, lists the Pritchett
Gouty family (spelled Prechet Goutty in the census records).(36)
The Pritchett Gouty family consisted of the following:
1) one male under age 10 (this should be Zachariah Gouty, born 1815 to 1817)
2) one male age 10 and under 16 (perhaps Thomas Gouty)
3) two males age 16 and under 26 (perhaps John and Henry Gouty)
4) one male 45 and upwards (Pritchett Gouty)
5) two females under age 2 (unknown)
6) one female age 26 and under 45 (Mary Donovan Gouty)

According to the booklet, Gessie, Indiana, The First One Hundred Years 1872- 1972,
"The Gouty family came from France (name originally Goutier) to Dorcester County,
Maryland, in 1670. Prichard Gouty was born 04 July 1766 and died 12 May 1837. He is
buried in a cemetery near the Squire Shute farm. Pritchard's three sons, Henry, Thomas,
and Zechariah came to Indiana in 1820. Henry to Parke County and Thomas to
Vermillion County. Zechariah brought their father here in 1830. There was a fourth
brother John but he settled near Rossville, Illinois. Henry had 9 children but all died
young and he left no descendants. Zechariah moved to Iowa. Thomas Gouty was
married 3 times and had children by all three. His first wife was Nancy Carr, his second
wife was Elizabeth Stutler and his 3rd wife was Catherine Hoobler. Everyone called her
Aunt Katie. She was a charter member of the Gessie United Brethren Church. Thomas
was the great grandfather of Dale Gouty. Elias Gouty (son of Thomas) was Dale's
grandfather. Lewis was Dale's father. Dale lives in the homeplace."(37)
In History of Vermillion County, Indiana, Biographical Sketches we find the
following: "Thomas Gouty settled in Vermillion County in 1833 or earlier. He died June
10, 1863, aged sixty-one years. Elias, his son, was born here in 1833. Henry Gouty may
have settled in this township a year or two later, he died in 1864, and his wife, Rebecca,
died in 1874, at the age of seventy-five years."

Pritchett Gouty and Mary Griffith Gouty were the parents of at least six children
that we can document and perhaps several others:

1. Elizabeth Gouty, born 15 December 1796 in Caroline County, MD, married

Samuel Chezem 14 January 1818 in Circleville, Pickaway County, OH.(38) She
died 29 May 1859 in Parke County, IN. (39)

2. John Gouty, born in Caroline County, MD, 31 March 1800 and died 24 January
1879; buried in Rossville, IL, Mann's Chapel Cemetery, Rossville, Vermilion
County, Illinois. He married at least two times.

3. Henry Gouty, born about 1802 in Caroline County, MD, and died 14 October
1858 in Highland Township, Vermillion County, IN.

4. Thomas Gouty, born about 1801 in Caroline County, MD, died 10 June 1863 in
Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana. He married three times. He
is buried with his third wife at Hicks Cemetery in Perrysville, IN.

5. Zachariah Gouty, born about 1815 in Pickaway County, OH.

6. Delilah Gouty, born in Pickaway County, OH, about 181?, married William
Cossey. She died in Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana, about
1840.

Perhaps other children, including a Mary (Polly) Ann Gouty. Perhaps a James Gouty
born about 1823 in Pickaway County, Ohio. The Talbert Family Tree on Ancestry.com
states that Nancy Kerr died 31 March 1840. It lists her year of birth as 1804. It lists the
children of Pritchett Gouty and Mary Griffith as: Jane, Rachel, Polly born in 1789,
Elizabeth born in 1798, John born 01 April 1800, Henry born in 1802, James born in 1804,
Thomas born in 1806, and Zachariah born in 1815. Pritchett born 04 July 1765 and died
12 May 1837. Mary Griffith born 1774 and died 30 January 1817. (40) "Marriage
We were able to trace the Pritchett Gouty family from Caroline County,
Maryland, to Pickaway County, Ohio. We will now review the move of the Pritchett
Gouty family to Indiana. We can do this by reviewing data about the individual
children of Pritchett Gouty.
Sometime after 1820, Pritchett Gouty, his wife, and their married children
headed to Parke and Vermillion counties in Indiana. A summary of the Pritchett Gouty
family movement and what is known about each of Pritchett Gouty's children and their
spouses will be presented to trace the families from Pickaway County, Ohio, to
Vermillion and Parke Counties in Indiana.
The will of John Gouty(Gowty), father of Pritchett Gouty, reveals much valuable
information about the brothers and sisters of Pritchett, as well as identifying Pritchett as
the son of John Gouty. It also helps point out the significance of the name Zachariah as
one that would be used to name other Gouty family children.

"Laws of Maryland, Nov. Sess. 1812, page 192, "to sell the said lands for
the use and benefit of the said orphan children of Zachariah Gouty." "4. AND BE
IT ENACTED, That nothing in this act contained shall be construed to defeat any
just claim that may be against the said Zachariah Gouty, nor in any wise to
deprive the widow of the said deceased, of her right of dower.
"to appoint a trustee and order the sale of all the right, title, interest and
estate of the said James Gouty, Mary Gouty, Lucretia Gouty and John Stevens
Gouty, minors and orphan children of the aforesaid Zachariah Gouty, deceased,
in and unto the aforesaid tract of land"
"called Church Grove, containing seventy three acres, and that the same is
unoccupied and very poor, and that it will in a very short time become entirely
useless to the heirs, and prays that a law may pass authorising the orphans' court
of Caroline county to appoint a trustee to sell the said lands for the use and
benefit of the said orphan children of Zachariah Gouty"

James Gouty, son of Zachariah Gouty and Lucretia Andrews. Zachariah died in
1812. James was born in February 1807 in Maryland according to One World Tree. He
died in 1850. He is listed in the 1830 Ohio, Pickaway County, Williamsport Township
census as age 20 to 30 and living with a female age 10 to 15. (41) Perhaps William Cook
was the father of Ketterah Cook. William Cook is on same census page in 1820 as
Pritchett Gouty. Also a Jesse Cook and a Marke Cook.
A Mary Gouty as well as a James Gouty are listed in the 1830 Pickaway County,
Ohio, census. Mary Gouty is listed as age 40 and under 50. One male in the household is
listed as age 30 and under 40. James Gouty married Keturah Cook on 20 July 1830 in
Pickaway County, Ohio.(42)
Land tract acquisitions by the members of the Pritchett Gouty family is an easy
way to trace their movement to Indiana. See APPENDIX FIVE for a listing of all the
land tracts acquired by members or in-laws of the Pritchett Gouty family in Indiana.
One characteristic these families had was to name their children by using as their first
name the maiden name of the wife, i.e, Price Chezem; Pritchett Gouty.

Pritchett Gouty and Mary Griffith Gouty were the parents of at least six
children that we can document and perhaps several others:

1. Elizabeth Gouty appears to be the oldest child of Pritchett and Mary Griffith
Gouty. She was born 15 December 1796 in Caroline County, Maryland.(YTR) She died
29 May 1859, in Parke County, Indiana.(43) Elizabeth married Samuel Chezem on 14
January 1818 in Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio.(44) She is buried in the
Montezuma Cemetery in Parke County, Indiana.(#* David R. Cheesman, Marriage
Records of Pickaway County, Ohio, 1810-1862]
Samuel Chezem was the son of John Chezem and Melvina Price. He was born 03
January 1795 in Caroline County, Maryland. He died 01 June 1857 in Parke County,
Indiana, and is buried in the Montezuma Cemetery, Parke County, Indiana.(17C) (17C)
Family History Library, Submitter Nancy E. Davidson. John Chezem and Melvina Price
also were the parents of Price Chezem and William Chezem. Price Chezem died 14
September 1851, aged 56 years, born in 1795.(45)(The Hoosier Connection, Volume 3,
Number 4, October 1986, listing for Chenowith Cemetery, Vermillion County,
Indiana. This cemetery is located 2 miles north of Perrysville on Gessie Road.
Sometimes called the Lowe Cemetery. Perhaps Price was a twin of Samuel
Chezem.)(Also other information lists Price Chezem as born 14 September 1801
which agrees with the census record for 1830.)
(also - Chenoweth Cemetery located in section 33, south of Perrysville, by CR 200 E
north of 1000 N.)

James Chezem, a brother of Samuel, was born December 23, 1799, in Maryland
and was a son of John Chezem. James Chezem married Mary Mitchell on November 20,
1819, in Pickaway, Circleville, Ohio.(45) Family History Library, submitter Janet Jones.

James Chezem died 23 June 1848 and was buried in West Union Cemetery, Parke
County, Indiana.(46) Family History Library, submitter Janet Jones.

A James Chezem married a Delila Gouty on 12 August 1849 in Parke County,

Indiana.(marriage records)perhaps a son of first James Chezem.

Price Chezem, also a brother of Samuel Chezem, was born 14 September 1801 a
son of John Chezem.(47)

In 1824 all Parke County, Indiana, land west of the Wabash River was ceded to
Vermillion County, Indiana.(48)

The 1830 Vermillion County, Indiana, census lists Samuel Cheeseman, age 20 to
30, and what we can assume to be his wife as age 20 to 30. Boys are two under 5 years
old, one girl under 5, two girls 5 to 10, and one girl 10 to 15.
The 1830 Parke County, Indiana, census lists a Price Chezem as age 20 to 30,
what we can assume to be his wife as age 20 to 30, one boy under age 5, one boy age 5 to
10, one girl under age 5, and one girl age 5 to 10.
The 1840 Parke County, Indiana, census lists Samuel Chezman as age 40 to 50,
what we can assume is the wife of Samuel Chezman is 40 to 50, one boy age 5 to 10, one
boy age 10 to 15, one boy age 15 to 20, two girls under age 5, two girls age 5 to 10, 2 girls
age 15 to 20, one girl age 20 to 30.
The 1850 Parke County, Indiana, census, enumerated on September 28, 1850, lists
Samuel and Elizabeth Cheezum in District 85. Samuel Cheezum is listed as age 54 and
born in North Carolina and Elizabeth is listed as born in Maryland and her age is given
as 53.(17D) Also listed are Lydia age 26, Jane age 19, Samuel age 17, Dil? age 14, Delila
age 13, and Milo age 9. All the children are listed as born in Indiana which means the
family was in Indiana by 1824 approximately.
The 1850 Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana, census lists Price
Chesem as age 52 and born in North Carolina, and he cannot read or write. Also listed
in the Price Chesem household are George age 19 who was born in Indiana and Mary
age 12 who was born in Indiana.
John Chezem, the father of Samuel Chezem, was born in 1760 in Baltimore, Ann
Arundel, Maryland and died 21 October 1850 in Highland Township, Vermillion
County, Indiana.(49) The 1850 Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana, census,
enumerated 21 October 1850 list John Chisem, age 90, born in Maryland, Comfort
Chisem, age 55, born in Maryland, Jean Chisem age 14, born in Indiana, and Margaret
E. Chisem age 8 and born in Indiana. Neither John nor Comfort Chisem could read or
write.(50) Family History Library, submitter Janet Jones. Since John Chezem, the father
of Price and Samuel Chezem was born in Maryland, it seems probable that Price and
Samuel also were born in Maryland. He(?) appears in the 1850 Vermillion County,
Highland, Indiana, census.(51)
Elizabeth (Gouty) Chezem died 29 May 1859 in Parke County, Indiana.(52)

Samuel Chezem owned land adjacent land owned by John Gouty on the First Land
Owners of Highland Township Map.(53) This land was a short distance south of land
owned by Henry Gouty and Thomas Gouty as indicated on the map.(54)[First Land

Samuel Chezem and Elizabeth Gouty were the parents of the following
children and perhaps others who are unknown:

i. Mary Ann, born 22 July 1821. She first married John H. Woody. She married
second Joseph L. Porter 31 December 1840 in Parke County, Indiana.

ii. Lydia, born about 1824 in Indiana

iv. Samuel, born about 1833 in Indiana

v. Dilbernna, born about 1836 in Indiana

vi. Delila, born about 1837 in Indiana

vii. Milo, born about 1841 in Indiana

Before we proceed with our discussion of the four Gouty brothers, John, Henry,
Zachariah, and Thomas Gouty, we point out the map in the Indiana State Library
entitled, Original Land Owners in Highland Township, Vermilion County, Indiana. The map
shows that Henry Gouty acquired land in 1829 in Highland Township, John Gouty
acquired land in 1826 in Highland Township, and Thomas Gouty acquired land in 1829
in Highland Township.(55)
Please refer to APPENDIX FIVE after the REFERENCES section at the end of
this document for a list of the Gouty and Gouty related family land purchases in
Vermillion and Parke Counties, Indiana.

County, Ohio.(58) She was born 19 December 1801 and she died in Vermillion County,
Indiana, on 29 January 1845, aged 43 years 1 month and 10 days. (From: "Marriage
Records Pickaway County, Ohio, 1810-1862" GOWTY, John to EARHART, Elizabeth

John Gouty married second Margaret Elizabeth (Talbert) Moore on 08 March
1849 in Vermillion County, Indiana.(59) She was born 08 February 1814 in Pennsylvania
and she died 18 May 1884 in Alvin, Illinois. Margaret Talbert first married a Thomas
Moore about 1836 in Vermillion County, Highland Township, Indiana.(60)
John Gouty acquired land in Vermillion County, Indiana, as early as 1826.(61)

John Gouty and his first wife, Elizabeth Earhart, were the parents of the
following children and perhaps others who are unknown:

i. Mary Ann Gouty probably was the female 5 years of age and under 10 who
was listed in the 1830 Vermillion County, Indiana, census for the John Gouty family.
Mary Ann Gouty was born 25 December 1823. She married Henry Talbert on 28
February 1841 in Vermillion County, Indiana. She died 10 September 1864.(62)

ii. Rachel Gouty probably was the female under 5 years of age who was listed
in the 1830 Vermillion County, Indiana, census for the John Gouty family. Rachel was
born 28 May 1826 in Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana. She married
William T. Talbert on 29 November 1846 in Vermillion County, Indiana.(63A) She died
22 February 1891 in Perrysville, Vermillion County, Indiana.(63)

iii. Sarah Gouty, probably the female age 5 and under 10 in the 1840 census. She
was born 06 August 1833, in Vermillion Cty, IN. She married Horatio T. Talbert. She
died 23 December 1907, in West Lebanon, Warren Cty, IN.(64)

iv. Rebecca Gouty, probably was a female age 5 and under 10 in the 1840 census.
She was born 29 January 1834 in Ross Township, Vermilion Cty, IL. She married Josiah
Bivans on 23 December 1852, in Vermilion Cty, IL. She died 23 November 1911, in

v. William Henry Gouty was born 20 October 1840, in Highland Township,

Vermillion Cty, IN. He married Mary Ann Bailey on 23 April 1872, in Perrysville,
Vermillion Cty, IN. He died 23 February 1928, in Covington, Fountain Cty, IN.(66)

vi. Elizabeth J. Gouty, born 15 August 1843 and died 20 April 1856, aged 12
years 9 months and 5 days. She was buried in the Old Baptist Cemetery, Vermillion
County, Indiana.(66A)

John Gouty and his second wife, Margaret Elizabeth (Talbert) Moore, were the
parents of the following children and perhaps others who are unknown:

i. Irvin P. Gouty born 1852, he died 23 August 1876, buried at Mann's Chapel at
Rossville, Vermilion County, Illinois. He married Delilah Jane Clawson on 10
October 1872 In Vermilion County, Illinois. Delilah Jane Clawson was born 03
February 1852. Delilah J. Clawson Gouty died 09 December 1874 and is buried at
Manns Chapel at Rossville, Vermilion County, Illinois.(67)

ii. Ella Gouty born 1859, she married an N. S. Crane.(68)

The 1830 Indiana census for Vermillion County, Highland Township, lists the
John Gouty family with 2 males age 20 to 30, 2 females under 5 years of age, one female
5 years of age and under 10, and 1 female twenty years of age and under 30. It seems
clear that John Gouty was married sometime after the 1820 census in Ohio. It also seems
obvious that Thomas Gouty must have been the other male age 20 and under 30 who
lived in the 1830 John Gouty household.
The census thus indicates John Gouty was born before 1810 and perhaps another
brother was living with him at that time.(69) John Gouty was the father of at least two
females born between 1824 and 1830. He was the father of one female born between
1820 and 1825.
The 1840 Indiana census for Vermillion County, Highland Township, lists the
John Gouty family with one male age 5 and under 10, one male 40 and under 50, one
male 50 and under 60, 2 females under age 5, 3 females 5 and under 10, and one female
age 30 and under 40. This census page lists all four Gouty brothers, Thomas, Henry,
Zacariah, and John.(70) John Gouty was living close to the Samuel Cheeseman
(Chezem) family and also near the Henry Gouty family and near the John Ricketts
family.(71)
1850 US census for District 21, Vermilion County, Illinois, lists John Gouty as age
50, born in Maryland, wife Margaret born in Pennsylvania and all of his children, John
19, Rebecca 14, Nancy 12, William 10, Jane 7, and Ellen 8 months as born in Indiana. (72)
Also living with the family in 1850 were John Moore, born about 1836; Webster
Moore born about 1838, Anan Moore born about 1840, Amanda Moore born about 1843.
Living nearby the John Gouty family in 1850 were several Hoobler families. Thomas
Gouty married a Hoobler in 18??. 1850 Illinois census for Vermilion County, District
#21. It seems obvious that the first wife of John Gouty died sometime after the 1840
census and before he married Margaret Talbert Moore in 1849.

3. Henry Gouty was born about 1802 in Maryland. Henry Gouty married
Rebecca Whitsell on October 22, 1823, in Pickaway County, Ohio.(73) (From: "Marriage
Records Pickaway County, Ohio, 1810-1862" GOWTY, Henry to WHITSELL, Rebecca

Included in a History of Vermillion County, Indiana, Biographical Sketches: Under

the age of 58. He went from Maryland to Ohio where he married Rebecca Whitsell.
They had eight children. From Ohio, Mr. Henry Gouty emigrated with his family to
Parke County, Indiana, and later removed to Vermillion County, where he lived until
his death."(74)
One Internet listing indicates Henry Gouty and Rebecca Whitsell married on
October 22, 1823, in Pickaway County, Ohio. She was born in 1800 in Ohio.(75) She died
November 24, 1874 at Gessie, Vermillion County, Indiana and is buried in the Howard
Chapel Cemetery.(76)

Rebecca Gouty was listed in the 1870 U. S. Census for Highland Township,
Vermillion County, Indiana, as 69 years old, born in Ohio, Post Office: Perrysville.(81)
Original land owners in Vermilion County, Indiana, included Henry Gouty in 1829 in
Highland Township, John Gouty in 1826 in Highland Township, and Thomas Gouty in
1829 in Highland Township.(82)

4. Thomas Gouty, married first Nancy Kerr on 14 October 1830, in Vermillion

County, Indiana.(83) They were married by Thos. Chenoweth, J. P. Nancy Kerr was
born about 1810 in Franklin County, Ohio.(84) She was a daughter of Samuel Kerr and
his wife. The wife of Samuel Kerr probably was Nancy Gwynne.(85) Samuel Kerr and
Nancy Gwynne were the parents of the following children, all born in Franklin,
Ohio(86): Orson Kerr, born about 1806; Joseph Kerr, born about 1808; Nancy Kerr, born
about 1810; Clarissa Kerr, born September 27, 1813; Samuel Kerr, born about 1815;
Robert Kerr, born about 1818; Elijah Kerr, born about 1821; and Jackson Kerr, born
about 1823.
Orson Kerr was one of the first landowners in Highland Township, Vermillion
County, Indiana. He owned land adjacent to Thomas Gouty as shown on that map. In
the 1885-1891 Lafayette, Indiana, Directories, Orson Kerr is shown as: Location Odell,
Years 1885, 1886, 1891, Tippecanoe County, Indiana.
An Orson K. Kerr served as a private on the Union side in the Civil War. He was
in the Veteran Reserve Corps, 2nd Battalion, Company 59.(87)(Film Number M636 roll
22). This Orson Kerr probably was a son of Orson Kerr Sr.
According to the 1880 Jackson Township, Tippecanoe, Indiana census, Orson
Kerr(Curr) was born about 1805 in Pennsylvania. He was a farmer and widower in
1880. Both of his parents were born in Pennsylvania. He was 75 years old. He was the
head of household.
Orson Kerr married Cynthia Clawson on 05 December 1828 in Fountain County,
Indiana.(88)
A key document that identifies the children of Thomas Gouty is the Vermillion
County, Indiana court case of Rebecca Gouty versus Elias Gouty et al, Book 20, page
261, Vermillion County Court In Partition. The children born to Thomas Gouty and his
three wives listed below are based on this court record.(VV)

Thomas Gouty and Nancy Kerr were parents of five children:

i. Clarissa Gouty born 05 July 1832 in Highland Township, Vermillion
County, Indiana.(89) She married John Sampson Chezem, a son of James Chezem and
Mary Mitchell. James Chezem was a son of John Cheesman Chezem who was born in
Baltimore, MD in 1760 and died 21 October 1850. Clarissa Gouty Chezem died 07 April
1875 in Deerfield, Vernon County, Missouri. Undoubtedly Clarissa Gouty was named
after the only sister of her mother. Clarissa Kerr was born 27 September 1813 and she
died 11 February 1880. Clarissa Kerr married Isaac Demorest, his second wife, on 24
October 1833 probably in Franklin County, Ohio.(per John H. Bell, born 28 April 1925 of
Lafayette, LA 70501)

ii. Elias B. Gouty born 11 September 1833 in Highland Township, Vermillion

County, Indiana, and died 18 April 1915 in Vermillion County, Indiana.(90) Elias B.
Gouty married Elizabeth Shute on 01 September 1853 in Indiana.(91) Elizabeth Shute
was the daughter of Richard Shute and Hannah McCartney who were married 01
September 1814 in Ohio.(92) Elizabeth (Shute) Gouty died 30 March 1915 and was
buried at the Hicks Cemetery at Perrysville, IN.(93)

iii. Mary Gouty born about 1836 in Indiana and died 04 Apr.il 1857.(94) She
married William O. Hoobler on 12 October 1853 in Vermilion County, Illinois. It was
not uncommon for people around the Gessie, Indiana, area of Vermillion Cty, Indiana,
to marry in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois. He was a son of John Hoobler and
Rebecca Fetterhoff. He was born 25 March 1830 in Fountain County, Indiana. Both are
buried at Phillips Cemetery, Manville, Livingston County, Illinois.

iv. Eleanor Gouty born about 1838 in Indiana(96)

v. John Russell Gouty, born about 1840 in Indiana and died in 1907(97) He
married Ruhama Davis (Dennis) in 1859 in Gessie, Vermillion County, Indiana. She was
born 03 October 1840 and she died 25 February 1882. Both are buried in Hopewell
Cemetery, Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana.

Elias N. Reynolds, who was born in Maryland, lived next to Thomas Gouty in
1850. Elias was age 46 and Thomas was age 44 in 1850. Perhaps Thomas named one of
his sons, Elias, after Elias N. Reynolds. The wife of Elias N. Reynolds was Rebecca who
is listed as age 42 and born in Ohio. However, since that would have been the year 1808,
she might have been born in Maryland instead. (?Elias N. Reynolds?) Married Rebecca
Craig on 06 May 1828 in Pickaway County, Ohio. Perhaps Rebecca Craig was a sister of
Minerva Craig who married Zachariah Gouty.
Nancy (Kerr) Gouty, the first wife of Thomas Gouty, apparently died sometime
before 31 May 1840, the date when Thomas Gouty married his second wife, Elizabeth
Stutler, in Vermillion County, Indiana.(98) Vermillion County, Indiana, Marriage Records,
1838-1844 include the following: Volume III, page 43, 31 May 1840, Thomas Gouty and
Elizabeth Stutler.
According to the Gessie Centennial, 1872 - 1972, "William Stutler came from Ohio
in 1830 and settled in Highland Township west of Gessie. He died in 1831 leaving six
children. Joseph S. a son was two years old when they came to Vermillion County, with
his parents."(99) According to a listing of First Landowners of Highland Township, William
Stutler first owned land there in 1829. History of Vermillion County, Indiana, Biographical
Sketches: Lists James C. Stutler who was a son of Joseph S. Stutler and a grandson of
William Stutler. William settled in Highland Township in 1830, where he died one year
later. Joseph S. Stutler was born in Ohio in 1820. The second wife of Thomas Gouty was
related to this Stutler family.(100) J. S. Stutler, farmer, 2 miles north of Gessie, born in
Ohio in 1820, settled in Vermillion County, Indiana, in 1829.

Thomas Gouty and Elizabeth Stutler were the parents of two children:

vi. William Gouty born about 1844.(101)

vii. Amos B. Gouty born about 1845 in Danville Township, Vermilion County,
Illinois.(102)

Elizabeth Stutler, the second wife of Thomas Gouty, apparently died sometime
before 28 June 28 1849 when Thomas married his third wife, Catherine Hoobler.(103)
They were married in Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois.(104) She had married a
William Villars in 1845 in Vermillion County, Indiana. She was a daughter of John
Hoobler and Rebecca Fetterhoff. John Hoobler was a minister of the U. B. Church. He
was born in Pennsylvania, in 1801 and settled in Vermillion County, Indiana, in
1832.(105) According to a listing of First Landowners of Highland Township, John Hoobler
first owned land there in 1831.(106) Catherine Hoobler was born 06 November 1825 in
Montgomery County, Ohio.(107)

Thomas Gouty and Catherine Hoobler were the parents of seven children:

viii. David Henry Gouty was born Mar. 16, 1850, in Vermillion Cty, IN, and
died Mar. 25, 1888.(108) He married Axa M. Chapman on Sept. 12, 1872, in
Livingston Cty, IL. She was a daughter of Sonum and Elmina Chapman. She was
born Aug. 12, 1851, in Trumbull Cty, OH, and she died Nov. 9, 1922. Both are
buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Danville, Vermilion Cty, IL.

March 27, 1913, in Gessie, Vermillion Cty, IN.(109) He married Sariah I. Prather
on Aug. 15, 1872, in Vermilion Cty, IL. She was the daughter of Jonathan Prather
and Nancy Martin. She was born Nov. 16, 1855, in Vermillion Cty, IN, and she died
Aug. 23, 1882, in Vermillion Cty, IN. Both are buried at Hopewell Cemetery,
Highland Township, Vermillion Cty, IN.

x. Sarah R. Gouty, born Mar. 6, 1856 in Vermillion Cty, IN, and died Jan. 23,
1861.

Nov.24,
1878, in Vermillion Cty, IN.(113)

xiv. Lydia A. Gouty, born 08 July 1862; died 19 May 1863. She is buried in
Hicks Cemetery, Perrysville, Vermillion County, Indiana.(114)

Thomas Gouty died June 10, 1863, and was buried in Hicks Cemetery,
Perrysville, Vermillion County, Indiana. The tombstone of Thomas Gouty indicates he
was "age 61". Therefore, Thomas was born after June 10, 1801 and before June 10, 1862.
Catherine Hoobler Gouty died January 5, 1915. She is buried with Thomas Gouty in
Hicks Cemetery, Perrysville, Vermillion County, Indiana.(115)

5. Zachariah Gouty, son of Pritchett and Mary Griffith Gouty. Zachariah was the
youngest of the four Gouty brothers, i. e., John, Henry, Thomas, and Zachariah. Perhaps
the most significant aspect of Zachariah Gouty is the fact the name Zachariah was used
by his grandfather and grandmother, John Gouty and Elizabeth to name one of their
sons. Pritchett Gouty and his wife apparently named one of their children Zachariah
after Pritchett's brother who died in 1812.
Zachariah Gouty married Minorney Craig on November 2, 1837, in Vermillion
County, Indiana.(Indiana Marriages to 1850) She was the daughter of David Craig and
Sarah Gowman.(116)(One World Tree) Zachariah brought his father, Prichett Gouty, to
Indiana in 1830.(117)

Zachariah Gouty and Minerva Craig were the parents of five children:(118)

i. John W. Gouty, born about 1839

ii. Freba Jane Gouty, born about 1841
iii. Sarah B. Gouty, born about 1843
iv. Polly A. Gouty, born about 1845
v. Elias N. Gouty, born January 1850
Zachariah Gouty is not found in the 1830 census records but he is in the
Vermillion County, Indiana, census of 1840.(119) Zachariah Gouty appears in the 1850
census for Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana.(120) He is listed as age 35
and born in Ohio.
In the 1840 Vermillion County, Indiana, census in the Zachariah Gouty (Zacariah
Goutty) household there is a female between the ages of 70 and 80 years of age. This
census entry is presumed to be Mary Gouty, the widow of Pritchett Gouty. Zachariah
supposedly is the one who brought Pritchett and Mary Gouty to Highland Township,
Vermillion County, Indiana.(121)

6. Delilah Gouty was born about 1805 in Maryland and died in 1838 in Vermillion
County, Indiana. She married William Cossey(122) in 1827 in Vermillion County,
Indiana, son of Nehemiah Cossey and Anne Peters.(122A) He was born about 1798 in
Maryland and died 10 April 1875 in Laclede County, Missouri.(123)

Delilah Gouty and William Cossey were the parents of eight children:(124)

i. Thomas Cossey, born 29 December 1824, in IN. He died 25 October 1891, in

Laclede Cty, MO. He married Sarah Ellen Latimer on 30 September 1847.

William Cossey was born in 1798 in Maryland.(125) Delilah Gouty married
Wlliam Cossey in 1827 in Indiana.(126) He died in April 1875 in Conway, Missouri.(127)
William Cossey and Delilah Gouty had a daughter, Katurah or Kitturah, who was born
in October 1832 in Vermillion County, Indiana, and who died March 4, 1874 and was
buried at John Chapel Cemetery, Missouri.(127) William Cossey married second Sarah
Drake on 26 July 1840, in Vermillion County, Indiana.(128)

The earliest know tract of land in Parke County, Indiana, of William Cossey is
dated 26 Apr 1826.(133) Several of the tracts owned by Thomas Gouty lie just south of
present day Interstate 74 and just east of Gessie, Indiana, as indicated on the map of
First Land Owners of Highland Township, Vermillion County, Indiana.
The following excerpt is from a book started by Isaac Sheridan Jones about
1898 and completed by Carl Jones in 1953:
William Cossey was born in the state of Maryland, near the coast, about the year
1798. His parents were of thrifty Yankee stock. When a young man he pitched his tent
westward and landed in Vermillion County, Indiana. There he married Miss Delilia
Gouty, who was the daughter of a wealthy farmer. They had eight children: Thomas,
Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Kitturah, Eliza, Delila, and William and James (twins). They lived
happily together for many years (14). She died of the dreaded disease of consumption
after a lingering illness.
Two years later Mr. Cossey was married to Miss Sarah Drake, who had been
employed in the family, for some time previous to Mrs. Cossey's death. To them were
born eleven children: Almira, Robert, Lydia Jane, Susan (died at age 16 years), John
Wesley, Vina, Sadie, Frances Marion (died at age of 9 months), and Rhoda.
Reverend Thomas Henderson preached the funeral sermon in the presence of a
large concourse of people. His remains were laid at rest in the family cemetery a few
hundred yards from his home.

Causey (Cossey) Family
Nehemiah Causey was born about 1770 in Caroline County, Maryland and died
about 1857 in Vermilion County, Illinois. Nehemiah is mentioned in the will of Thomas
Causey, Sr. (Solomon's father). Land records in Caroline C. Md. mention the transfer of
property and the relationship of those involved in the transactions. These land records
also mention his first wife Susannah by which he had two children. The name "Cossey"
does not appear until after the arrival in Vermillion Co., Indiana. Other family
researchers believe the family is of Scotch descent. His father was Solomon Causey who
was born about 1750 in Grant's Causeway, Ireland. He married Anne Peters on June 25,
1798, in Caroline County, Maryland. Their children were: Katurah COSSEY b: 1800 in

Katurah Cossey was born about 1800 in Caroline County, Maryland. She died
September 13, 1867, in Vermilion County, Illinois. Her father was Nehemiah Causey
and her mother was Anne Peters. She married Abraham Strawser Sr. on January 28,
1819, in Ross County, Ohio. He was born July 1, 1796, in Berks County,
Pennsylvania.($# Gessie Indiana Centenial Book, Pgs 15--16 Census records: 1850

was born November 17, 1845, in Rileysburg, Indiana. He died November 23, 1930, in
Danville, Illinois. He married Sarah Elizabeth Jones, born February 16, 1853, on July 9,

Peter Cossey, a son of Nehemiah Causey and his wife Anne Peters, married Sara
