Adams Revision
In her letter to her son, John Adams, Abigail Adams, through the use of allusion reveals
her purpose which is to make sure her son understands that he needs to follow the story of
Jesus in order to be an influential and impactful leader to the American people and change their
lives for the better. Adams feels as though her son should behave in the same fashion as the
Son of God because it is [his] lot, [her] son, to be an eyewitness of these calamities in [his] own
native land, and, at the same time owe [his] existence among a people who have made a
glorious defence of their invaded liberties. Adams is alluding to Jesus. This can be revealed
through how she references John Adams as her son, in resemblance to how God references
Jesus as his son. Equivalent to how John Adams will have to witness the problems of his own
land, Jesus was on Earth to witness man kind for himself, he saw all of their problems and
shortcomings, in a land which became his own. John Adams owes his presence to a people that
have had to defend their disrespected freedoms from Britain, in the same way Christians of the
days of the Old Testament had to defend themselves from original sin derived from Adam and
Eve. The ancient couple represents Britain ,an old presence responsible for hardship and most
of mankind at the time, trying to reach Heaven, are allusions to Americans, trying to pursue
happiness. This whole reason Jesus even came into existence was due to a need of the general
public, equivocal to John Adams and Americas ned for a strong leader in their distress. The
reason for Jesus existence was to be sacrificed to remove original sin and help mankind to
better reach Heaven, the same to John Adams in how he was put in his position to better the
lives of Americans in their journey to happiness. Much like the American public who, aided by a
generous and powerful ally, with the blessing of Heaven, will transit this inheritance to ages not
yet born, so did the people living in the time of Jesus crucifixion. The ally of these ancient
peoples and even today is Jesus, an entity blessed by Heaven, same to John Adams in how he
is the Christian ally of Americans, hopefully with the blessing of God warranted due to his faith
in Christianity. When Jesus was crucified he ended orginal sin, a benefit later generations
inherited. Abigail Adams wants her son to perform the same feat, to become a lasting and
impactful leader with future generations inheriting the good from his actions. Abigail wanted her
son to behave in a way parallel to the Son of God, to rule among a people, to help and assist
them in bettering their lives in a way even future generations would experience.

I used the same device which was allusion, however, I used a different quote to explain a
alternate biblical them which was the purpose of Jesus instead of the story of Adam and Eve
because it made more sense and better followed with allusion. I believe I did a better job
explaining the device and how it correlated to Abigail Adams purpose.
