star connected heating elements . If the wire temperature
is to be 11000 C, estimate the suitable width of strip.
Assume radiating efficiency of 0.6 and emissivity of 0.9.
The specific resistance of nichrome alloy is 1.03 X 10 -6
-m.State any assumption made.

is hung 6 M above the area . Calculate the illumination i)
at center ii) at the edge of the surface with and without
reflector. Determine also the average illumination over the
area without reflector.

Long Questions
1. A train with a locomotive having 4 motors has a total
mass 250 tonnes . Starting from rest attains a speed of
40 kmph in 20 sec. on a 1% upgradient. The gear ratio
is 3, the gear efficiency is 95% , the wheel diameter is
95 cm, train resistance(average) is 40N per tonne and
rotational inertia is 10%. Find the torque developed by
each of the motors and the minimum weight of the
locomotive. Given the adhesive coefficient as 0.25.
2. A train weighing 200 tones is accelerated uniformly
from rest to speed of 45 kmph up a uniform gradient of
1 in 500, in 30 sec. The power is then cut off and the
train then coasts down a uniform gradient of 1 in 1000
for a period of 40 secs., when brakes are applied the
train comes uniformly to rest in 15 sec. Calculate the
maximum power output of the driving motor assuming
efficiency of 60%.
3. A) What are the advantages of electric drive and state
the limitations to its use.
b) A 200 tonne motor coach having 4 motors each
developing 6000NM torque during acceleration , starts
from rest. If up gradient is 30 in 1000, gear ratio 4, gear
transmission efficiency is 90%. Wheel radius 45 cm.

10% , overall efficiency of transmission and motor is
75% . Determine specific energy consumption.
5. A electric train to have acceleration and braking
retardation of 0.8 kmphps and 3 kmphps respectively. If
the ratio of average to maximum speed is 1.3 and time
for stops is 26 secs. Find scheduled speed for a run of
1.5 km. . assume simplified trapezoidal speed time
curve.
