1 Introduction
1.1 Positioning
The rapid development in the field of mobile communications technology brings about sharp
growth in the number of mobile phone users, which increasingly pose high requirements in
the network quality of operators. In urban areas, network quality in places such as office
buildings, business centers, and hotels has caught much attention. However, the size and
weight of the BTS normally cause difficulty in acquiring a suitable site for operators during
network deployment. Customer-oriented and innovative, Huawei unveils the industry-leading
BTS3900E GSM (hereafter referred to as BTS3900E).
Characterized by its small size, large capacity, and low power consumption and only one
functional module, the BTS3900E, is an integrated BTS with outstanding performance, which
provides an excellent indoor coverage solution for operators. Generally, indoor coverage is
accompanied with difficult site selection and high requirements on network performance. The
highly integrated BTS3900E is designed with only one functional module. Small and
lightweight, the BTS3900E is easy to install and endowed with high capacity and
extraordinary performance, rendering it an effective solution for operators. Beyond that, the
BTS3900E complies with the International Protection standard IP65. The strong outdoor
environment adaptability enables the BTS3900E to fulfill outdoor installation requirements,
and to achieve good performance even for coverage in urban hotspots and rural outlying areas.
The BTS3900E supports up to six carriers. Capacity can be expanded through the addition of
modules. Each synchronous site supports up to 18 carriers. Figure 1-1 shows the BTS3900E.
1.2 Benefits
Compact Structure and Quick Network Construction
The BTS3900E has a highly integrated design, requiring less cable connections and facilitates
installation and maintenance. In compliance with the IP65 protection degree, the BTS3900E
features strong environment adaptability and has no need for an equipment room. The
BTS3900E can share the Distributed Antenna System (DAS) on the existing network to
maximize the investment protection for operators during network upgrade. Meanwhile, the
compact and lightweight BTS3900E has a small number of spare parts, thus greatly reducing
the cost of transportation and maintenance. The various installation options such as wall-
mounted, tower-mounted, support-mounted, and pole-mounted are possible with the
BTS3900E. These options can well address the operators' requirements for quick and flexible
site deployment, significantly accelerating network construction.
2 Architecture
2.1 Overview
With a highly integrated structure, the BTS3900E incorporates all the following functions of
conventional BTSs in one functional module:
z Transmission
z Main control
z Baseband processing
z RF processing
The BTS3900E has two types of functional modules: AC module and DC module, where the
former supports 110 and 220 V AC power inputs and the latter supports 48 V DC power
input.
The transmission interface unit provides the E1/T1 transmission port, FE transmission
port, and ports for combined cabinets. The E1/T1 transmission port supports two
E1s/T1s. The FE electrical port implements FE transmission. The two ports for
combined cabinets connect to extension modules.
z Alarm interface unit
The alarm interface unit provides inputs of environment monitoring signals: four dry
contact alarms and one RS485 signal.
z Main control unit
The main control unit manages the entire BTS3900E in a centralized manner in terms of
OM and signaling processing. Also, the main control unit provides the system clock.
z Baseband unit
The baseband unit performs functions such as signaling processing, channel coding and
decoding, and modulation and demodulation.
z RF unit
The RF unit employs the MCPA technology to achieve the processing capability of one
to six carriers.

3 Application Scenarios
3.1 General
The increasingly difficult site lease has made site acquisition into a bottleneck for network
construction. To address this issue, operators are pressing for a BTS with low site
requirements. With only one module required to be installed, the BTS3900E features easy
installation and low environment requirements, which reduces difficulty in site acquisition.
The BTS3900E has a wide variety of installation options, such as installation on a pole, wall,
tower (not for the AC module), or stand.
Figure3-1 shows the typical installation options of the BTS3900E.
If the module is mounted on a tower or a pole, the vertical height of the module must be less
than or equal to 15 m.
Indoor Coverage
Along with the development of cities, the indoor mobile application has become widespread.
For indoor coverage scenarios, however, operators are facing great challenges from the
perspective of site selection and construction speed. If macro BTSs are used to serve indoor
coverage, operators are frequently confronted with high lease cost of equipment rooms, and
the noises generated by macro BTSs make site acquisition even more difficult. Therefore,
operators are pressing for a BTS that places the equipment room in dispensable and generates
low noises. In indoor coverage scenarios, the BTS may be installed in locations such as the
light-current shaft, or storeroom. Such locations present complicated environment, confined
installation space, and highly difficult installation, which requires the BTS compact, light, and
possessed with strong environment adaptability.
Attributing to its compact structure and marvelous performance, the BTS3900E aids operators
in constructing an indoor network with high capacity and good coverage. Such network,
without doubt, brings more benefits for operators. As a signal source, the BTS3900E,
combined with the DAS, can be widely applied in indoor coverage scenarios that require high
capacity and quality, such as hotels, office buildings, supermarkets, and business centers.
Figure 3-2 shows one of the application scenarios.
Hotspot Coverage
In urban hotspot areas, high capacity of a BTS is always contradictory to the easy installation
of the BTS. The compact and light BTS3900E with high capacity, however, allows easy site
selection, simple engineering, and easy installation, thus contributing to fast network
deployment at lower costs for operators. The BTS3900E can be used to absorb traffic or fill
coverage holes in hotspot areas. Figure 3-3 shows the application in the hotspot coverage
scenario.
Rural Coverage
The BTS with low power consumption and strong environment adaptability can well fulfill
applications in rural areas, network deployment of which is always complicated by deficient
transmission resources and instable power supply. In addition to significant reduction in
power consumption, the BTS3900E saves much energy and takes advantage of green energy,
such as luminous energy, wind energy, and methane that are abundant in rural areas. The
BTS3900E complies with IP65 and is strongly adaptive to temperature and outdoor
environment. The BTS3900E works at 40 to +45 in the presence of solar radiation and
at 40 to +50 in the absence of solar radiation. Furthermore, the BTS3900E supports
wide AC power voltage range from 90 V to 290 V to satisfy requirements of areas with
unstable power supply voltage.
With only one module, the BTS3900E features simple structure and easy installation.
Therefore, requirements for installation techniques and tools are low, and engineers after
receiving simple training are qualified to install the BTS3900E. The BTS3900E can have
significant achievements in rural areas where demand on wide coverage is not high. Figure 3-
4 shows the rural coverage scenario.
