Wound Sky (2008)
- for 11 musicians

Performance time: 11

About this piece (not intended for Program Notes):

Written in April to June of 2008, Wound Sky is dedicated:

Toshio Hosokawa, whose invitation to Pacific Music Festival was one large motivation for me to write this composition, and;

Margherita Getman, whose life, creative outputs and friendship are big inspirations for me.

Instrumentation

Flute (doubles with Alto Flute and Piccolo)

Oboe
Clarinet in Bb (doubles with Bass Clarinet with low concert Bb)

Trumpet in C (Mutes used: straight, cup, practice)

Tenor Trombone (Mutes used: straight, cup)

Percussion (1 player)
Xylophone
Vibraphone
Crotales
Grand Piano without upper lid Important:
Flexatone
Two sets of Bongos Clarinet in Bb (not Bass Clarinet) and
Bamboo Chimes Harp are tuned quarter-tone flat. For
Five Woodblocks clarinet, achieve this by pulling the
Bass Drum barrel, upper joint, lower joint and bell.
Tam-Tam On Buffet Crampon clarinets, the ratio of
pulling the three joints should be, from
Harp top to bottom, approximately 2:1:3 for
bringing down the general intonation
Violin uniformly.
Viola
Violoncello
Contrabass
Performance Instructions:

1) The score is transposed!

2) To the conductor: Since the general tempo of the piece is slow, it is advised to subdivide wherever necessary in order to produce accurate rhythms. Moreover, for measures in which the
denominator of the time signature is 8th note, conduct in 8th note. When the denominator of the time signature is in 16th note, appropriate indications of conducting such bars are indicated.
3) In no accounts the players are permitted to make any passages rubato, except where accel. or fermata is indicated.
4) Always trill with the note shown in the parenthesized note.
5) This piece utilizes quarter-tones. It is important that the quarter-tones are executed correctly.
6) Adherence to the symbols described on the following pages is essential to the success of the piece.

Suggested Stage Arrangement:
