he phrase Drift Matsuri has
developed over the last few
years to now cause anyone
with even a hint of interest
in drifting to go weak at the
knees when mentioned.
Usually held in October at Wales
Anglesey Circuit, the all-weekend event is a
chance to put the scoreboards to one side
and unleash a couple of days of drifting
nirvana for beginners and professionals
alike.
So successful is the laid-back, super-
cool formula, that organisers have put on
a second event for the last few years
Spring Matsuri held at Rockingham Motor
Speedway and offering similar thrills but at
the start of each year.
This years Spring Matsuri was the
most successful yet, kicking off the 2017
drifting season with all types of action
both on and off the circuit. On track, the
weekend followed an open-pit line format,
incorporating the legendary Oval turn as

were witnessed alongside one another, from
beginner BMW thrashers through to full-on

was then home to Round 1 of the 2017

very best moves to drool over.

was a full half-pipe setup, where professioanl
BMXer Mark Webb could be seen shredding
over the 48 hour event, along with a RC drift
course for those who like their sideways

ENGINE POSITION
One of the most interesting features of
the engine is where its positioned in the

mounted as far back as possible, in an

dry-sump system allows it to be mounted
really low too, as there is no bulky oil pan

They built just 10 gearboxes for these cars, allegedly at 40-50,000 each claims
Aly. Theyre unique to this car and he has four of them. Its a six-speed Hewland
four-wheel drive sequential box, designed for fast shifts and fast ratio changes too.
Each box has a cassette with all the gears on it that can be swapped in about 30
minutes. Aly adds: Ive also got three choices of drop gears, so I can effectively
alter the final drive ratio in a similar way. The Hewland rear axle is also unique to
these cars, with large plate-type limited-slip differentials front and rear. Aly has both
plated and torque-biasing centre differentials to choose from. So far hes used the
latter (ATB) diff because it was more compliant but hes going to be experimenting
with the more aggressive plate-type this year.

s much as we dont like paying for it, we all think that
without fuel our cars are useless, but what most of us
dont realise is how crucial fuel choice is when it comes
to making big power on tuned engines. Weve all heard
the word octane, and know that higher octane is a good
thing, but theres a whole lot more to fuels than that, and
this feature will give you an insight in to this.
Finally though, dont think youve got no choice but to run race
fuel for big power, as thats simply not true. There is zero doubt
better fuel makes your life easier, but its been well proven that
a correctly specced and correctly mapped 2ltr turbo engine
can produce over 300bhp per litre on pump super unleaded,
which is more than enough for most of us. Having said this. If
you want to go all out, theres simply no beating running the
best fuel possible.

This then brings me to the involvement of
Radu, at RCBS, when things went from simply
bonkers, to truly insane! Radu had played a
big part in the correction and improvements
for the aero on my brother's Evo VI, previously
featured in Banzai back in August 2016.
Now amongst other custom modifications

scratch in creating a one off, custom aero kit
for my car. You will see what I mean next

hose that have owned an R32 GT-R,
especially more recently, will know that
these cars are getting on a bit now. Not
that its a bad thing - its nice to drive a car that
feels a lot more mechanical than computerised.
However, certain parts of the car seem to
deteriate faster than others and one of the first
to go seems to be the wiring. Or at least the
wiring connecting the coil packs, as a misfire is
a common issue with these cars and often its
down to corroded wiring. This was confirmed
when I removed the plugs to change the coils
recently, chasing a small misfire. The wiring had
become so brittle that it had begun to break
down, but it was the plastic moldings that held
the pins in place that were actually worse. Half
of these literally crumbled as I unplugged them,
leaving the pins to move around loosely inside
the plug and therefore rendering them useless.
So, it was time for a new coilpack loom. After
