Hello All
Welcome to another issue of our magazine. Next months will be a double one.
I hope you all enjoy the summer break and that we get some warm weather. At
least the gardeners should be happy with the rainfall we have had in the last few
days. Thank you once again Chrissy Brace for another of your lovely recipes.
Very Best Wishes

Vicar's Letter for flamin' June
The sound of Mendelssohn's Wedding March will soon be echoing around our
villages it's June, although perhaps not flamin' June as I write, but certainly the
start of the main wedding season. They say if you marry in June you're a bride all
your life, and the bridegroom who marries in June gets a sweetheart for a wife.
Well, there may not be seven brides for seven brothers this year - but it's just as
exciting for all those involved in planning a wedding.
People are still choosing to tie the knot in church, making solemn promises in the
eyes of God and in front of the gathered congregation, despite competition from
alternatives like all-in-one wedding and reception venues. Vows of love made in
public are always extremely moving and it's a joy and privilege to be alongside
couples at this important time in their lives. We consider the different qualities of
love: such as patience, kindness, trust and forbearance, truthfulness; and the
cost of loving someone -because love always comes at a cost.
So in June love is in the air and it would be good to keep this uppermost in our
minds as we are all drawn to other more turbulent events, less joyful perhaps but
certainly emotionally charged. I'm thinking of the General Election.
Many people are anxious and disturbed by the challenging, uncharted political
territory in which we find ourselves however we voted in the referendum or plan
to vote on Thursday June 8th. Love in all its complexity is conspicuously absent
from the political arena, especially during election campaigns - and yet we need it
so much.
Our Archbishops Justin and John have written an open pastoral letter to the whole
country, available to read in its entirety on the Church of England website. In it
they urge us to take inspiration from the ancient Christian values of love, trust and
hope, while playing our part in these troubled times with generosity and kindness:
the season of Easter invites us to celebrate and renew our love of God and our
love of our neighbour, our trust and hope in God and in each other.
Some people think that the Church should never speak out nor involve itself in
politics; but being the established Church, church and state are inextricably
entwined in our Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, Defender of the Faith and Head of
State. She offers us a perfect example of loving, prayerful service to all her
people without exception, however they choose to vote on June 8th. My love and
prayers to you all and for our country. Yours in Christ, Judith

A View from Lanky Hill.
Unfortunately there was no space available in a very busy May magazine for a
long article I wrote about the Spring weather this year and how remarkably dry
this has been. I do record rainfall amounts. In March a paltry 1.25 inches of rain
fell. Then in April, worse still, with only 0.5 inches on top of this. Only a few drops
fell in May up to the middle of the month.

However, as I write on the 16th/17th of the month, a deluge is promised for the near
future. British weather never seems to be predictable. I suppose that's why we
constantly talk about it.

At least a heavy rain would ensure the future of my crop of early potatoes.
Despite constant watering with a lawn sprinkler, they were starting to fall behind
an expected harvesting date of the first week in June. Just imagine, perhaps on
General Election Day, a supper of new English lamb, new potatoes, peas and
broad beans: it's a pity you can't all be invited.

I recently celebrated my 70th birthday. As this conveniently fell on a Sunday, I

hired a day cruiser on The Broads at Wroxham. Five of us (but not poor old dog
Jake) enjoyed a day afloat on the River Bure.

My son Ross, named after the original Ross Poldark, decided to take charge of
the navigation and steerage of this motor boat. The River Bure, on the way to the
coast near Great Yarmouth, meanders across the flat lands of East Norfolk. This
made steering the craft especially with a moderate North-Easterly breeze a bit
problematic for a novice helmsman like Ross. This was certainly not helped by a
very alcoholic lunch at Coltishall. We were all glad to arrive back safely at
Wroxham. Thank goodness we were there out of season. During July and
August chaos would have ensued.

Mike Chamberlain

Grimston & District Good Companions

Thirteen members were able to join in the return trip to the gardens at Elgoods in
Wisbech, (fortunately after the early rain had passed over!) It was a very interesting
visit and everyone enjoyed comparing the differences to be seen in the trees and
plants in May, with their first trip last September. So much so that all agreed that, as
gardens change so quickly, it would be a good idea to consider another trip on a
different month. Members expressed thanks to Christine Brook for organising the
outing and to our chairman, Nick Smith, for driving the minibus.
New members and visitors are always welcome to meetings - for details just ring Nick
on 600769 or Shirley on 600750.

Holly Meadows School

This term, we are delighted to welcome two new members of staff to our team at
Holly Meadows: Hannah Woods now teaches in Key Stage 1 and this week,
Stephen Danes joins us in Key Stage 2 bringing a wealth of skills, experiences
and ideas.
We are also very excited about becoming a 'Forest School' once again, now that
our Early Years teacher Rebecca Hogger is in the final stages of her Advanced
Forest School Leader training. Forest School is an inspirational concept providing
learning opportunities through practical activities in an outdoor environment.
Children enjoy the freedom to explore and experience the natural world in all
seasons and in all weathers. Forest School embraces an approach of nurturing,
supporting and developing the self-esteem of all participants. It is an ideal
environment in which to develop innovation, problem solving, risk taking, creativity
and teamwork. Holly Meadows certainly has the ideal site for outdoor learning
and this approach combines our vision: 'Inspire, Challenge and Encourage' with
each of our core school values: Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Reflection,
Collaboration, Curiosity and Creativity.
Our pupils (and staff) are most definitely creative! In Key Stage 2, we have been
developing and extending our experiences in Art and Design through a range of
printmaking activities. We held a competition in school and selected 15 super
pieces to display in an exhibition at Westacre Theatre. The work was such high
quality that it was extremely difficult to choose! We now have plenty of work to
display in our corridors and classrooms.
Jennie Wildsmith-Garton

Holly Meadows School

OWLS

Our small lunch group meets once a month for lunch. We usually go to
somewhere in the vicinity of Kings Lynn or Grimston, but this month we are
going as far as East Rudham , to the Crown. Next month on June 28 we will meet
at Narborough Hall for lunch. Anyone interested in coming please phone Judith
Gough on 01485 609217 or email goughpj@btinternet.com. Transport can be
arranged. New faces are welcomed.
Thanks
Judith Gough

I overheard a conversation between two drivers who had thoughtfully waited till six
horses passed safely by, but had not received a thank you. What these drivers must
realise is that a verbal thank you is not in the horse's vocabulary! This unusual
command could result in a sudden trot or stop and the rider not ready for it! A smile
and nod from the rider is their thank you, and a thumb's up and a return smile would
be very welcome.

Greenfingers May 2017
Helen Lilley and Jean Hale were invited to talk to the club about Little
Discoverers, the local charity we will be supporting at the Annual Horticultural
Show in September. They provide an early learning environment for pre-school
children with physical difficulties and delayed development, to learn new skills
whilst having fun. As a local charity they were delighted that we would be raising
funds on their behalf.
Somerleyton Hall, June 21st: Pick up times for the coach trip are:
9am Pine Parlour, 9.05 am Chequers Road (Pott Row end), 9.10am Congham
Hall, 9.15am Grimston Clock.
Meadowfest, May 20th: The club supported the Holly Meadows' PTA Fundraiser.
We will be distributing children's schedules for the Autumn Show along with
potted sunflowers for children to care for and enter in the show.

The speaker for the evening was Colin Ward from Swine's Meadow Nurseries,
assisted by his very capable wife. His subject was Hostas. He arrived with what
must have been half of his nursery stock, all of which was for sale at the end of
the talk. Farmers from Market Deeping, the nurseries' beginnings were a few
plants for sale at the farm gate. This rapidly developed into the nursery. He
spoke with humour and showed a wide range of hostas along with advice on slug
and snail control. Without the aid of any notes, his extensive knowledge and
passion for his subject was revealed.
Plant of the Month winners: 1st Janet Brittain, 2nd Margaret Gladman, 3rd Mary
Roper.

Next month's meeting is on June 13th when the speaker will be

Jim Paine from Walnut Tree Nursery, whose subject will be Rare, Unusual and
Beautiful Shrubs. All visitors are most welcome.

At our May meeting we discussed resolutions to be sent to the National
Federation meeting in June. The subjects were about alleviating loneliness and
the problem of microscopic acrylic fibres from washing our clothes, contaminating
the sea and harming marine life. Once notices were concluded, we got on to the
serious business of pudding tasting, our competition for May! There were more
than enough for everyone and we had several savoury dishes to try as well. The
winner was Mary Roper, second, Mary Lupton and third, Chris Williamson and
Alison Barlow.

We are organising a coach trip to Southwold on 12th July. Anyone interested in a

footpaths and bridleways which are being neglected, or overgrown, or even being
forgotten. Any footpaths which are not being used will be lost if we do not act
quickly.
Tree Preservation Orders have been approved on trees at Congham Hall and

The Last Word

Most of us enjoy taking part in a competition. Even if it is something where we are

the sole competitor, like the challenge of completing a crossword. Remember quiz
nights in the village hall or at home. Of course we know there can only be one
winner. But for those who just miss the prize, there is the satisfaction of having
performed beyond expectation.

Recently a couple of successful competitors moved many, myself included, not so

much because of some special relationship with the winner, but because of the
manner of their success. Who would have thought that a full time doctor and
mother could win Master Chef 2017? And yet Saliha Mahmood-Ahmed did for the
skill of blending Asian and Western cuisines to the delight of the best chefs in the
land. This was the skill and dedication of a competitor who had never faced such
a challenge before. Nor that a beautiful simple love ballad sung by the voice of a
sick competitor from Portugal would win the Eurovision Song contest? But it did
against all the latest technology, modern dance and entertainment other
competitors could put together.

There is something here that strikes the notes of passion, simplicity and trust that
overcomes the greatest of challenges. Here is a reminder of that much loved
story in the Bible of David and Goliath. Of course there is skill, passion and
integrity, but there is a deeper secret that believes that when I am weak, then I
am strong. I recall that the greatest competitor and victor of all time wooed his
listeners referring it to the pearl of great price.

What is the reference here, if it is not the challenge we all face. Not all are up for
competitions, but there is one we cannot avoid. It is the challenge of life itself, for
there are many things competing for our attention and allegiance. A pearl is a
thing of beauty and value and its attraction is obvious. But a pearl takes a good
while to grow and develop in the oyster. What is your oyster? As for beauty,
cosmetics can help both men and women. I have friend making millions in London
in cosmetic surgery. But we are not fooled, because as important as it is, at the
end of the day it is surface stuff. Once I did a lot with young people, and I used to
tell the lads not to be bowled over by the girls because of their amazing hair
styles! I knew that at heart most young men want a woman who has not slept
around. The beauty of a pure heart and a straight life is indeed priceless, but we
have to find the secret and that might be a lot to do with what our oyster is!
