AR-104: STRUCTURE-I

TIME-THREE HOURS MAXIMUM MARKS-60

NOTE: Attempt all five questions. Part a, b, and c of each question is compulsory and carries 1, 2, and 2
marks respectively. Out of parts d and e (7 marks each) any one of them is to be attempted. Missing
data, if any, may be assumed suitably.

1. a. State parallelogram law of forces.


b. State the equations of equilibrium for general coplanar force system.
c. State Lamis theorem of three concurrent forces.
d.State and prove Varignons principle.
e. A particle is acted upon by following forces:
(i) 20 N inclined 300 to North of East
(ii) 25 N towards North
(iii) 30 N towards North West
(iv) 35 N inclined 400 South of West.
Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant force.

2. a. Define Moment of inertia.


b. Differentiate between centroid and centre of gravity
c. State perpendicular axis theorem of moment of inertia.
d. Find the centroid of the I-section shown in figure 1.
e. Determine the moment of inertia of the T-section shown in figure 2. about horizontal axis passing through
centroid.

3. a. Define Shear force.


b. Define beam. Discuss various types of beams with sketches.
c. Derive the expression for relation between shear force and bending moment.
d. For the cantilever beam shown in figure 3. Draw Bending moment diagram.
e. Draw the shear force diagram for the simply supported beam as sown in figure 4.

4. a. State clearly Hookes law.


b. Define bulk modulus and Shear modulus.
c. How do you determine elongation of a uniformly tapered bar subjected to an axial load?
d. Derive the expression for relation between modulus of elasticity and modulus of rigidity.
e. A cube of 300 mm side is subjected to 15 N/mm2 (tensile), 9 N/mm2 (compressive) and 7 N/mm2
(tensile) stresses acting along X, Y and Z-axis respectively. Determine the strains along the three
directions and the change in volume. Take Poissons ratio= 0.25 and E = 2 x 105 N/mm2.

5. a. Define Section Modulus.


b. What are the assumptions in the theory of simple bending?
c. Explain pure bending.
