Surveying Department Geodesy 1-B

Assignment (8)
1. What is trigonometric leveling?
2. What is triangulation?
3. What is a Satellite station?
4. Explain the classification of triangulation system?
5. What are the minimum observations of establishing triangulation, trilateration and
hybrid networks?
6. To find the elevation of the top (Q) of a hill, a flag staff of 2 m height was erected
and observations were made from two stations P and R, 60 meters apart. The
horizontal angle measured at P between R and the top of the flat staff was 60 30
and that measured at R between the top of the flag staff and P was 68 18. The
angle of elevation to the top of the flag staff was measured to be 10 12 at P. The
angle of elevation to the top of the flag staff was measured to be 10 48 at R. Staff
readings on B.M. when the instrument was at P= 1.965 m and that with the
instrument at R = 2.055 m. Calculate the elevation of the top of the hill if that of
B.M. was 435.065 m.
7. To locate the position of P of a sounding boat, the angles APB and BPC subtended
at P by three points A, B and C on the shore were measured with a sextant, and
found to be 28 42' 40" and 30 28' 20" respectively, B and P being on opposite
sides of AC. The lengths AB and BC were 920 m and 1075 m respectively, and
angle ABC was 60 50' 40". Compute the distances PA, PB and PC.
8. From a satellite station S near the main triangulation station A, the following
observations were made on the three stations A, B and C. angle A = 309 17' 30",
angle B = 0 00' 00" and angle C = 63 32' 20". A station D was fixed towards A at
about 21 m from satellite station S so that S, D and A are in the same vertical
plane. The vertical angles observed at D and S to the station A were 21 53' and
14 24', respectively. The staff readings on a reference point, with the line of sight

horizontal, from S and D were 0.996 m and 0.852 m. The lengths AB and AC
were about 6415.8 m, and 7129.2 m, respectively. Determine the angle BAC.
(Answer 63 33' 48.73")
9. The elevations of points A, B and C are 100, 110 and 125 m. the distance AB is 6
km and that of BC is 8 km. Will B create an obstruction to the line of sight from A
to C? What will be the height of the signal required? (Answer 12.88 m)
10. In the following figure, find all types of the internal conditions by the three
methods and determine the best route to compute the side JK from known side
AB.

11. Adjust the following geodetic quadrilateral ABCD with central station O. Assume
equal weights.

2 53 37 05 8 32 59 44
3 78 03 50 9 95 14 47
4 58 57 30 10 23 17 35
5 31 51 09 11 59 12 10
