It is a myth that Nimsoft is a cheaper, simpler alternative to Big 4
Reality: Nimsoft lacks visibility that large enterprises need, and their use of open source
makes it complex and costly to maintain

It is not an APM solution as it lacks Transaction Tracking and deep diagnostics
Nimsoft is difficult to setup and maintain doesnt automatically track changes

Complexity, not for faint of heart, need a few admins, versed very well Customer Quote
Nimsoft & CA have 2 separate architectures; added complexity without common backend/GUI
Not cheap for mid market; $20,099 base pack + $141 per instance on top of it
NMS offers very limited monitoring of application server environments, which are regarded by most organizations as
critical nodes in modern application architectures Gartner
The complex setup and configuration of components and monitors requires assistance from the vendor, and an
understanding of the different components and configuration tools Gartner

Nimsoft itself is not a true SaaS
Nimsoft needs servers on premise that can act as a hub for the bus and hub model
This on-premise server introduces additional performance bottleneck

But CA is struggling with its APM solution
CA posted a decline of 3%, 3% and 5% for their Enterprise Solution sales in the last 3 quarters (Fiscal
1Q, 2Q, 3Q, 2014) Earnings Report
Their latest release of CA APM 9.5 (Wily + Introscope) has huge memory leak issues and they had to
revert back to previous versions
To overcome these issues, CA last year announced (April 2013) CA Wily on SaaS. Their CXO's pledged
support to get customers migrated to SaaS in their CA World conference last year
After such announces, the Wily SaaS solution is still not available for purchase due to stability and
performance issues !
Though they call this as a SaaS solution customers need to have a server on premise that will collect the
data from all the agents and forward it to the off premise SaaS
To add to the confusion, CA retired their NSM solution and are forcing customers to migrate to either
IM - Infrastructure Management or Nimsoft
If were going to drive this organic engine and innovate we have to get you off old releases

CAs Monitoring Strategy Infrastructure Mgmt
Strengths
Nice looking GUIs
Weakness - Scalability
CA has appliance based solutions for transactions and networks monitoring
They need to deploy a lot of these appliances especially around load balancers to capture
transactions
These appliances does not scale and has a huge impact on performance
They are in the process of consolidating these appliances to reduce the infrastructure overhead
Weakness - Integration
They make use of Catalyst tool (Common data model and connectors) for integrating their
solutions
Their products talk to each other and are integrated but creates a huge overhead and complexity
that needs to be deal with in terms of
Additional databases, connectors and reconciliation services
Weakness - Depth
CA forces the customers to invest in a huge infrastructure that will not scale in order to provide the
depth that the customer needs
You need atleast 3 -4 solutions before you can view physical and virtual infrastructure performance together
Capacity planning is a separate soln comes again with its own infrastructure and has 3 different products
and needs Service Assurance portfolio in place before it can be used

IBM and CA: Head to Head Compare
CA IBM Product Match CA's APM and Nimsoft solutions are based on different architectures forcing customers
to choose one over the other
CA Xtraction TBSM Only IBM provides the ability to marry agent and full agent technologies for transaction tracking and
resource monitoring. It takes a lot of machines for CA to trace transactions, because they combine
their TIM (CEM component) boxes, with Introscope to trace from machine to machine resulting in
CA Business Service Insight TBSM
sprawling of server.
CAs solution doesnt scale
CA CMDB TADDM CA must tune each agent to get their management server to handle more agents. CA needs more
hardware to scale e.g. assuming each Java Virtual Machine (JVM) has 10 applications, a single
CA Configuration Automation TADDM Introscope Server can only support 10-15 JVMs. CA is 50-70% impact on Throughput- 2-5% on CPU
(Processor Load vs. Throughput).
CA Cloud SCO IBM APM's single managing server can easily support 250-300 of JVMs.
CA Application Performance IBM Application Performance
CAs capacity planning solution is complex
Management Management CA's capacity planning is a separate solution and comes with its own infrastructure and has three
different products. But, IBM APM helps customers get quickly started and ensure continuous
optimization of their private cloud by providing the ability to plan capacity and visualize
CA Spectrum ITNM/OMNIbus
performance in a single solution.
