Talking to some young transgender people 16 years +, when they
discovered they were transgender, how they deal with their lifestyle, is it
easy, are they accepted at university?
How attitudes are changing for big companies e.g. including
transgender models for advertising campaigns. This will show how
attitudes are slightly changing from Jacqui being dropped as a model in
the 1980s/90s.
Who is Jacqui Gavin?
Jacqui has been a leading Trans activist for the past 30
years where she came to the fore after she was ousted
by the national press as a transgender model.
Jacqui transitioned in 1983, aged 15, after moving out
of her family home in Scotland. I left because of
difficulties being bullied at school. I was living in
London waiting on tables. I remember putting on
make-up and just feeling like me.
But then, at 16, I had to return home because my
mum was ill. I had to detransition which was hard. I
joined the RAF. One day they found a bra and
knickers in my bag. I could have said they were a girlfriends but I didnt want
to lie.
I was called in for a meeting with my supervisors who were furious. They were
going to demote me - but I decided to just leave instead.
Jacqui began gender reassignment surgery and, aged 20, started modelling. She
had a successful career but after a tabloid outed her a year later (her clients
hadnt known she was trans), she says, I was dropped like a stone because I
wasnt seen as a woman anymore.
Currently she is employed as a Civil Servant where she works at the very heart
of UK government in improving the policy and guidance on transgender issues
across Whitehall.
In addition, Jacqui does a range of tasks in support of the transgender
community from her work with Liverpool Pride, as a Non-Executive Director
for MyGwork, a speaker and role model with Diversity Role Models, Purple Tie
Promotions and Stonewall, a trustee for Pink Triangle Theatre, Mermaids and
the Michael Causer Foundation.
She has also been a regular name on the Pink Power List, the independent on
Sunday, Pink News and the Pride Power List lists her as one of the most
influential LGBT people in the UK
Are attitudes of the modelling industrys changing?
Jacqui faced major prejudice from the modelling companies when they found
out she was transgender, which resulted in her modelling career ending. This
supports my research of how traditional values and attitudes were very old
fashioned and anyone slightly different would not be accepted.
However recently there has been a rise in the number of transgender models.
For example; fashion brand Diesel unveiled a campaign in 2016 which starred 2
transgender models Loiza Lamers and Ben Melzer to promote its collection
on German site About You prior to this they also cast another trans model;
Stav Strashko for its summer campaigns.
Diesel was quoted we as Diesel always support diversity in all its forms.'
The progress does not stop there with both modelling for big brands like Calvin
Klein, while Loiza won the 10th series of Hollands Next Top Model in 2015.
Calvin Klein, & Other Stories and even New York department store Barneys
have featured transgender models in their campaigns,

Furthermore in August 2016, Whoopi Goldberg announced her new show

Strut which is about Slay Model Management the worlds first transgender
modelling agency. Goldberg said the aim of the models is to break down
barriers and take on the responsibility of representing the transgender
community in todays society
LOral makeup
It was announced in January 2017 that LOrals true
match makeup campaign would include a diverse series
of spokespeople, including, notably, transgender model
Hari Nef.
Hari has also featured in a 2016 H&M ad, joining a
diverse array of women, including those of various
sizes and gender expression, one with visible armpit
hair, and two kissing underwater.
Nick Adams, director of GLAADs Transgender Media
Program, tells Yahoo Beauty. Its important that the
public sees transgender people in all types of media,
and that includes advertising. This year weve seen brands like Nike, H&M,
Clairol, Make Up For Ever, and others spotlight transgender people who have
compelling stories
Since only 16 percent of Americans say they personally know someone who is
transgender, its important that media outlets and companies like LOral share
the stories of transgender people so that everyone can see that transgender exist
and are part of the fabric of everyday life.

Young Transgender
Chemistry degree student Matt is
transgender.

When asked what the biggest

challenge for him at university he
replied ; Being misgendered.
He says he asked his University
to put him in a flat with similar
people because it would make
him feel more comfortable, but
they couldnt provide this service
for him.
Matt said one of the most important things to him was being supported by his
friends. He admitted that whenever he goes out clubbing he avoids going to the
toilet unless hes with a friend he can trust, because drunk students are more
confrontational and hes afraid that hell be questioned.

Matt is not alone in this. The Trans Mental Health Review (2012) found that up
to 81% of Trans people avoid public situations out of fear and 50% of these
people avoid public toilets.

Are universities doing enough?

The National Union of Students (NUS) say they estimate that 28,000 UK
students are trans. (2015)
A report released in May 2014 revealed that half of all trans students
seriously consider dropping out of their course during their time at
university. The report also found that one in three trans students have
experienced some form of bullying or harassment at university
Reubs Walsh, NUS LGBT campaigns committee trans representative,
says: Universities are not doing enough to support trans students. There
are surprisingly few universities that have strict anti-LGBT-phobia
policies in place
Andrea Grainger, a student at Keele University, believes that many campuses
arent safe spaces for the LGBT community: Last year queer students were
being assaulted on campus. One of my close friends was attacked and he told
me not to go out in the evenings. Given my tendency to wear womens clothes,
while looking like a man, I expect I could have got beaten up easily.
Some students are simply fighting for their universities to recognise the
existence of their gender identity. Elliot Folan, a history and politics student at
UEA, says: My universitys registration system doesnt even recognise that my
gender exists. So I feel quite unsupported by the university.
So, another aim of this documentary is to encourage some universities to be
more proactive and aware on transgender rights.
However there are some universities like the University of Staffordshire, Essex
and Bath who have LGBT societies, links on their websites to other transgender
websites and counselling teams. So the aim of
the documentary is to encourage other Unis
to have these resources too.
