INTRODUCTIONBYJOELCHADABE threemusicians.NaldjorlakI,IIandIIIwasfirstperformedin
Inthe1960s,ElianeRadiguebegantomoveawayfromher January2009.Theevolvingsounds,themysteryofthesounds,
earlierworkinmusiqueconcrteasPierreHenrysassistant, thedepthandpresenceofthesounds,arealltherewiththe
withitsfocusonthejuxtapositionofselfcontainedmusical instruments.Butwiththesecompositions,ElianeRadigues

Inurbanenvironmentsweareseparatedfromtheconsequencesofouractionsassurelyasthetarmacof
theroadcutsusofffromtheearthbeneath.Thisphysicalboundaryencouragesaphenomenologicalsepa
ration.Itisalsoasymptomandadriverofaglobalrelianceontheprivatecarandfossilfuel.Butbetween
thecracksinthepavement,anotherworldflourisheslocalactivism,recycling,environmentalcollectives,
permaculture,urbangardening.

Artisticandsocialprojectscanwidenthecracksinthepavements.Suchcreativeinnovationsmightbeart
works,socialentrepreneurship,scientificinterventionorinnovationsthatharnesseverydaycreativity.They
mightseektodecodethecomplexrelationshipsbetweenpeople,natureandtechnologyinurbansettings.
Ortheymightbeconceivedasinterventionsthatcanhelpcontributetoprofoundsocialchange,orsuggest
alternativepossibilitiesfororcriticalperspectivesonsustainability.

Anewrelationshipisemergingascomputingmigratesintotheenvironment.WhentheEarthismapped,
taggedanddigitized,itceasestobeinertrawmaterialandbecomesinsteadnavigable,computableand
manipulable.Howwillthisaffectthewaythatindustrialsocietieshaveviewedtheenvironmentasa
resourcetobeexploitedandtamed?
