CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
SEMESTER II TEST NO2 JUNE 2013

NTA 5
MODULE NAME: REINFORCED CEMENT CONCRETE DESIGN
MODULE CODE: CET 05213
DURATION: 11/4 HOURS (75 MINUTES)
DATE: 23/06/2010

INSTRUCTIONS
(i) This paper consists of two (2) questions
(ii) Attempt both questions
(iii) Marks allotted to each question are indicated
(iv) Effective span = clear span + effective depth or clear span + support width whichever is less
(v) m for steel =1.15 and m for concrete = 1.5
(vi)Density of concrete concrete = 24kN/m3
(vii) Borrowing of tools/equipment is prohibited (clause 5.7.2.9 of MIST prospectus 2009/2010)
(viii) Writing anything on question paper is prohibited (clause 5.7.3.5 of MIST prospectus 2009/2010)

1.Based on fig 1 shown below and any other pre known theories determine the maximum design strain for each of
the following steels used to reinforce various concrete structures
(a) R (mild steel)
fy/ m
(b) T (high yield steel) {4MARKS}

Compression fy/ m
Fig 1. Short-term design stress-strain curve for reinforcement.

2.A simply supported singly reinforced beam of 450mm deep by 250mm wide made of grade 30 concrete and
required to give 2hrs fire resistance in mild exposure. The beam carries a characteristic dead load of 10kN/m
(excluding its self-weight) and characteristic imposed load of 15kN/m.
The beam frames in to 500mm square columns at each end.
If T20 (fy = 460N/mm2) and R10 (fy = 250N/mm2) bars are used determine:-
(a) Maximum effective span to the nearest metres for beam to carry the specified loads
(b) Maximum clear span to the nearest millimetres
(c) Maximum overall span to the nearest millimetres
(d) The area of reinforcement provided to support the moment for beam whose effective span has been determined
(a){dont use Grouped bar area table} (checking for maximum and minimum As allowable is an optional)

(a) Maximum effective span L to the nearest metre is = 5m 01.25

(b) Support width sw > effective depth d 0.25

Therefore Clear span = effective span - effective depth 0.50
5000 390 = 4610mm 0.50

(c) Overall span = Clear span + 2Support width sw 0.25
