SPECIMEN: Spleen (refer to the lecture)

SPECIMEN: Tongue
- taken from the dorsal surface of the anterior 2/3 of the tongue - due to the presence of
LINGUAL PAPILLAE
3 Types of Lingual Papillae
Filiform Papillae
- slender with tapering pointed ends
- MOST numerous
Fungiform Papillae
- broader, with blunted end
- fewer
Circumvallate Papillae
- Biggest
- at the junction bet the posterior 1/3 and anterior 2/3
- silver staining

- each papillae is surrounded by a shallow trench

- in specimen with this papillae onion shaped TASTE BUDS with nuerosensory
GUSTATORY RECEPTOR CELLS
- Epithelium: STRATIFIED SQUAMOUS
- central core of each papillae is made up of areolar connective tissue
- Lamina propria: Contains seours and mucous glands
- Tunica Propria: Skeletal Mucscles (beneath) - this are supported by ADIPOSE TISSUE
where BV and Nerves are found

SPECIMEN: Teeth
- Teeth are papillary derivatives of the oral mucous membrane.
3 Anatomic Division
Crown
- exposed part of the tooth extending from the gingival
Root
- embedded in the alveolar socket of either the mandibular or maxillary bone
Neck (Cervix)
- junction between the root and the crown

3 Types of Substances that make up the Hard Portion of the Teeth

Enamel
- Hardest substance of the body
- ectodermal epithelial in origin
- covers the crown superficially
- secreted by AMELOBLASTS
Dentin
- forms the bulk of the tooth
- sourounded by
- Enamel at the Crown (thicker)
- Cementum at the Root

- Harder than compact bone

- sourrounds the CENTRAL PULP CAVITY - contains dental pulp
- consists of minute DENTINAL TUBULES - gives a radially striated appearance
- each tubules contains - TOMES FIBERS - protoplasmic processes of ODONTOBLASTS
- secretes dentin - found at the periphery
Cementum
- covers the root superficially
- consists of FIBRILLAR BONE TISSUE
- secreted by CEMENTOCYTES - found at the apices of cementum
- PERIODONTAL MEMBRANE - periosteum of the alveolar socket where the tooth is
attached.

RESEARCH
What are the soft tissues associated with the tooth? Briefly describe each
Gingival Gums - mucous membrane surrounding the teeth
Gingival Epithelium - striated squamous epithelium
Gingival Crevice - shallow canal or furrow
Periodontal membrane - attaches the roof of the tooth to the alveolar socket
Epithelial crests of malazzes island of epithelial tissues
alveolar socket of base - where the root of tooth is embedded
Enumerate three important functions of teeth
mastication
asethetics
speech

SALIVARY GLANDS

SPECIMEN: Parotid Gland

- compound tubulo-alveolar serous gland
- enclosed by a fibroelastic tissue that sends trabeculae that divides the glands into lobes and
lobules
- pyramidal, acidophilic, granular, serous secreting cells with round nuclei lining each
acinus(lumen and basket cell not visible)

Ducts:
- wide lumen
- lined by simple columnar epithelium
INTERLOBULAR DUCTS
- found in the fibrous connective tissue trabeculae
INTRALOBULAR DUCTS
-Found among the ACINI
- lined by columnar cells - STRIATED DUCTS
- lined by cuboidal or flattened cells - INTERCALARY DUCTS

SPECIMEN: Submandibular Gland

- compound tubulo alveolar mixed mucous serous gland

- more serous acini - appears same as parotid gland
- Mucous Acini - paler, basophilic, with reticulated cytoplasm and flattened nuclei ( at the
basement membrane)
- capped at the periphery by serous CRESCENTS OF GIANUZZI OR DEMILUNES OF
HEIDENHEIM

NGPB 5 of 7
Histology Lab Practicals Viva 2018

- ducts and trabeculae is similar with parotid gland.

SPECIMEN: Sublingual Gland

- compound tubulo alveolar mixed serous and mucous acini
- more mucous acini - clear and pale staining
- serous acini are few and small
- serous crescents - thin and not prominent
- Interlobular Ducts - similar with parotid gland and submandibular gland
- Intralobular ducts - only striated salivary ducts - no intercalary ducts

Research
what is the functional unit of a salivary gland called? What does it consist of ?
adenomere - it consists of acini and duct

What is the function of the saliva?

moistens chewed food and lubricates bolus to facilitate its swallowing passage through GIT
contains bacterial flora in the mouth and protects the oral cavity from pathogens
immunoglobulins in saliva consists in the immune system defense against bacteria in the
mouth
