RT431
Chapter 1 Product Scope Reason RT431

1 PRODUCT SCOPE

RT431 Time Code Generator is a compact GPS-based clock designed to be installed on a DIN rail, allowing
the equipment to be installed in locations with limited space and reduced panels.

Precise Time Protocol (IEE 1588 PTP) version 2 provides accurate synchronization over Ethernet networks
within 100 ns accuracy, enabling applications like synchrophasors without the need to use separate IRIG-B
and PPS networks. Improved stability and holdover performance are achieved with advanced stability
control, which enables the continuous synchronization of IEDs with high accuracy even with occasional loss
of satellites. For power system applications, the PTP Power Profile is available in accordance with the
standard IEEE C37.238.

RT431 configured as PTP slave also works as a transceiver from PTP to IRIG-B, serial or pulse time codes,
enabling the use of PTP on IEDs that do not support this protocol.RT431 - Time Code Generator, is a
compact GPS-based clock capable of being time source, in different formats and protocols, to synchronize
internal clocks of equipment and systems based in digital processing.

It supports the following protocols sync time:

PTP (Precision Time Protocol) according to IEEE1588 standard, eliminating delay from message
processing which pass in other devices in the network;

NTP/SNTP;

IRIG-B004 (Demodulated);

IRIG-B124 (Modulated);

DCF77;

Serial Datagrams through the RS232 and RS422/485 serial ports.

Low frequency pulses, as PPS, PPM and others configurable options.

3.1 PTP / SNTP / NTP

Reason RT431 offers the accurate PTP time protocol, which is defined by the IEEE 1588, to precisely
synchronize IEDs and computers over a LAN (or VLAN). This temporal protocol is capable of syncronizing
multiple clocks with a better than 100ns time accuracy on a Ethernet Network.

As designed by the IEEE 1588, RT431 may operate either as the PTP Grandmaster clock or the Slave
clock. In accordance to IEEE C37.238 standard, the Reason GPS clocks are also compatible with PTP
Power Profile for application in digital substations.

RT431
Chapter 3 Key Features Reason RT431

To save time and reduce costs avoiding the need to overlay a separate time-synchronising network,
SNTP/NTP and PTP can share can share the same physical links as IEC 61850, DNP3 over Ethernet,
MODBUS, etc.

3.2 STATIONARY MODE

In applications such as current differential protection, the equipment providing the time synchronization must
be in locked state in order to keep the protection available. For this reason, the Stationary Mode allows the
equipment to be in a locked state even when receiving signals from a single GPS satellite.

However, these two conditions shall be followed to use the Stationary Mode:

Stationary Mode can be used only when RT431 is in a fixed position (in a substation, for example). If
the unit is moved from its position when operation in Stationary Mode, there will be loss of time
accuracy.

Before get in Stationary Mode, RT431 shall lock its sync receiving information from at least four
sattelites. This condition applies every time the unit is powered on.

3.3 IMPROVED STABILITY

All GPS clocks from Reason count with improved holdover stability and advanced control-loop algorithms to
allow for hours of accurate free-running if satellite communication is lost.

3.4 ENVIRONMENTAL ROBUSTNESS

With a robust design, all Reason GPS are in accordance with IEC 61010-1 and IEC 60255-27 standards,
ensuring reliability and ruggedness even under harsh environments. Critical applications can benefit from the
optional redundant power supply for even higher uptime and reliability. Every manufactured unit undergoes
complete functional and stress tests to ensure the highest quality.

RT431

RT431
Chapter 5 Hardware Design Reason RT431

The Sync indicator shows the equipment is synchronized with time reference from GPS satellites or from a
PTP Grandmaster Clock. When the Alarm indicator is on, the equipment is not operating and it is necessary
the operator's attention. The Power led indicates the equipment is on.

5.2 NETWORK PORT

The network interface presents the following features depending on the equipment version:

Monitoration and configuration

NTP/SNTP synchronization protocols

IEEE 1588 PTP synchronization protocol

5.3 POWER SUPPLY

The power supply can have the voltage ranges listed below:

1. 100-240Vac, 110-250Vdc

2. 24-48Vdc

RT431
Chapter 6 State Indicators Reason RT431

6 STATE INDICATORS
The Sync indicator shows that unit is synchronized with time reference from GPS satellites. This indicator
blinks when the unit is searching for orbit data from GPS satellites, which is a common situation if the unit
has been moved over long distances or has been out of operation for a long period of time. The Sync
indicator also lit up when the unit is receiving PTP messages from a Grandmaster Clock. This indicator will
turn off as soon as the external reference is lost.

The Alarm indicator should light up for a brief period of time while the unit is being initialized. After concluding
the initialization, the unit will start operating and this indicator should turn off. In case the Alarm indicator
remains on, the unit will not be operating and it will be necessary the operator attention.

Chapter 7 Web Interface (Remote Access) Reason RT431

7 WEB INTERFACE (REMOTE ACCESS)

RT431 has a Web Interface that allows monitoring and configurating the unit. In this section is shown how
monitoring the RT431 status in real time, checking general system information and to logging external
timestamps pulses.

To connect to the Web Interface, enter the unit Ethernet port IP address into the address field of a web
browser. For information about factory default for Ethernet port, see Installation chapter. If the unit is not
using factory default settings, see Operation chapter for instructions to obtain the current IP address.

A start page containing the unit status information opens once you access the Web Interface. The remaining
monitoring and configuring sections are on a menu on the left. To access them, click the desired menu item.

8.3 INTERNAL OSCILLATOR

Table 6: Internal oscillator specifications

Drift (without external reference) < 0.1 ppm (107 )

The internal drift of the GPS clock is expressed in ppm. In the industry, the de facto standard for crystal
accuracy is 20 ppm, interpreted as plus or minus number ( 20 ppm). This mean that every 1 million seconds
there is a drift in the accuracy of more or less 20 seconds.

The RT431 drift is lower than 0.1 ppm. One million seconds corresponds to 11 days, 13 hours, 46 minutes
and 40 seconds. So our clock has a drift lower than 100 ms every million seconds.

This accuracy in ppm can also be expressed as a percentage: 0.1 / 1,000,000 = 0.00001%.
