Nature of light Worksheet
Worksheet 2

1. The following passage describes some important aspects of the photoelectric effect .Insert the missing
words.
In the photoelectric effect, a single .................................... interacts with a single electron at the surface
of a..................................... In this interaction .................................... is conserved. This was
summarised by Albert Einstein in the following equation hf = + mv2
Where mv2 is the maximum kinetic energy of the .................................... and is
the.....................................

2. Magnesium has a work function of 5.89 10 J. Explain the meaning of this statement.

3. The maximum wavelength of electromagnetic radiation which can release photoelectrons from the
7
surface of caesium is 6.5 10 m.

(i) State the part of the electromagnetic spectrum to which this radiation belongs.

19
(ii) Show that caesium has a work function of about 3 10 J.

4. The energy level diagram shows the ground state and two excited states E1 and E2 of a
neon atom.

In a helium neon laser, collisions occur between helium atoms and neon atoms. This results in the helium
neon atoms being excited from the ground state to level E2. They then emit photons and move to level E1.
(a) What is meant by energy level?
(b) What is a photon?
(c) Write a formula in terms of E1 and E2 for the energy of an emitted photon.
(d) The wavelength of an emitted photon is 6.33 10-7m. Calculate the energy of this photon.

5. An electronics student is using light emitting diodes (LEDs) to make a traffic light model. He uses red,
orange and green LEDs. The table gives information about these LEDs. They are identified as 1, 2 and
3.

(a) Complete the table by filling in the colour of light emitted by each LED.
(b) Calculate the energy of the lowest energy photon emitted by this traffic light model.
6. Calculate the wavelength of a football of mass 400g travelling at 30m/s.
