Sound design
What sound will your Productions have?
Because our part of the exhibition is dedicated to our music videos, the main sound of our
productions will be the music, although some productions may also use diegetic sound such as
sound from the scenes and speech in an intro or ending.

Will you use headphones or speakers for this sound?

We will be using headphones within our production rather that speakers because music is a key
aspect of the productions. The music is what the video is based around, with editing effects such
as cutting to the beat.

Why?
We will be using headphones because, as said before, the video revolve around the music. As
there are multiple productions within the exhibition, we cannot use speakers as there are
multiple productions within the exhibition, and they may be using speakers. This means that if
there are too many productions, the sounds may become muffled and indistinguishable to the
viewer.

Lighting design
What lighting will you have in your installation? Consider health and safety.
The lighting within the gallery is very bright. This is because it is used to stage mainly photography and
paintings. The lighting is mainly artificial lighting, although some natural lighting comes in through the
skylight and the front doors of the exhibition house.

Sketch out your lighting plans for the installation.

Since the only way to provide high quality sound without speakers is through a screen, such as
the tablet, lighting may be an issue with the screen. If we use a tablet such as an iPad, we can
use the brightness setting to increase or decrease the brightness depending on the light levels
within the day. For example, when it gets darker, the brightness can be decreased to reserve
energy.
Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Projection vs screen
Will you project your video or play it on a screen?
The productions we are displaying, will be shown using a screen, rather than using a projector.
This is because of the type and genre we are presenting which is music videos. Because of this
sound is a large aspect of our production, and we must use a screen.

Why?
If you are using a screen, will you
We will be using a screen to present use a single screen, or multiple
our productions. This is because they Screens?
are created around the music with We will be using a single screen to
effects such as cutting to the beat. This present our work. This is because we
means that the sound must be high are presenting a small amount of
quality. Screens show both the images productions. This also means that the
and sound is high quality. For example, cost and amount of headphones will be

Technological convergence

What is technological convergence?

Technological convergence is when multiple media sources are in one source, for example, on a
phone it has the internet, social media & games.

Will you be using this in your installation?

We will be using an iPad which has the qualities of technological convergence but we will be
using the video player on the tablet to installation to show the work

Explain your answer.

We will not be using games to help show off the work that we will be showing, all the work will
be shown by the internet using YouTube as all the work is uploaded there

How have the following influenced your ideas?

Work of the artist you have researched:
When developing the ideas for presenting the video productions we looked at video exhibitions such as
those of music artists such as Bjork. Bjork is a islandic musician who held an exhibition at the end of
2016 hosting her digital exhibition Bjork Digital. The exhibition displayed Bjorks immersive film Black
Lake which showed panoramic visuals of Bjork performing the first track of her critically acclaimed
album Vulnicura. The video was presented using VR which created an immersive environment using
screen and headphones. Similarly, we will be using headphones for the same purpose. Headphone will
immerse the viewer solely in the sound of the video they are watching and in higher quality.

Venue & Facility:
Looking at the venue, we had to create a plan that fit the limitations of the venue we are hosting the
exhibition in. As our video will be shown during the day there will be high levels of light from the
skylight and artificial lights. This means that we cannot use a projector as the video may not be seen in
the lighting. The venue is also small, so we cannot use speakers as they may disturb the sound of other
presentations within the same space as the venue.

Lighting, Projectors & Screens:
As said before, there are overhead skylights within the venue that allow light in during the day. During
the darker hours of the exhibition there are overhead artificial lights. There are very bright which
meant that a projection of the videos may not be clear. Although we may be able to make the room
darker by turning off the lights of covering the skyline, there are other presentations that may rely on
this lighting, and therefore they cannot be changed. The iPad also allows us to alter the brightness of
the tablet throughout the day to fit the lighting.

Sound, Speakers & Headphones:
As spoke about with venue and facility, the venue is reasonably small, and is made up of one wide
room. Because of this, we cannot use speakers as we may have to lower the volume of the music if
others are using speakers. This also means that the sound may be indistinguishable, because of this, to
present clear and consisted sound for our music videos, we are using headphones.

Copyright issues

What potential copyright issues could your installation infringe?

The main copyright issue that could arise will be the song choice. This is mainly due to the fact,
that certain artists may need permission to allow them to promote this song. This will mean we
will need to get written permission from the artist, to ensure they are fine with using the song.

How can you be certain that the work you are displaying does not violate any copyright
infringements?
We can be certain that it doesnt violate any copyright issues, by researching the
possible hazards that could arise and ensuring that everyone is aware of his. We will
also ensure that we contact the artists who are being listed, and make sure we are
able to use their songs and that we can promote them in our installation
