Christof Nussli - Withheld Due To:

Cpress 2017 ISBN 9783952471005 Acqn 27310
Pb 15x22cm 404pp 198ills 170col 33.75

In this book (or unbound collection of folded pages) Christof Nssli tackles one of the greatest
torture scandals of recent times, using material such as images and files from Abu Ghraib prison
and the War on Terror released by the United States government. He calls upon viewers to
question what they see, and to face the feelings these images evoke while looking at them. Can
such images shock, despite not showing anything shocking? Does a censored transparency still
create transparency? Redacted documents, close-ups of isolated body parts, vague bruises and
marks on the skin... many disturbing questions emerge as only the surface of this sordid narrative
is touched upon.

Henk Wildschut - Ville De Calais

Henk Wildschut 2017 ISBN 9789082588507 Acqn 27429
Pb 21x28cm 320pp 300col ills 59

Nearby the harbour city of Calais in France, a parallel world has existed for more than ten years.
Here, refugees from Africa and the Middle East await their chance to cross the Strait of Dover
and reach the United Kingdom. Since 2005 photographer Henk Wildschut has followed the
increasing stream of migrants whose journeys end in limbo outside Calais. Gradually, their forest
camps have grown to resemble a city, with houses, restaurants, churches, mosques, and
libraries. The paths have become a road network, and toilets and electricity have been provided.
Rather than capture personal stories and portraits, Wildschut documents the physical traces of
these invisible people.

Francois Goffin - Muss Es Sein? Es Muss Sein!

Peperoni Books 2017 ISBN 9783941249110 Acqn 27460
Hb 19x28cm 96pp 75ills 55col 32.50

The scenes Franois Goffin captures seem to be collected along the path of a life that is his own.
His photographs fixate on the everyday and the basic, with nothing being really surprising or
exceptional. Clouds, children, stones, landscapes, objects, water, and more sketch an altogether
tranquil picture bordering on superficial mediocrity, yet collectively these images encourage
intensity. Tracing the uncertain contours of life, recurring motifs subtly add rhythm to this
collection of images. Goffin occasionally interjects something to break the normalcy, a scrap of
visual dissonance that signals emotions passion, attraction, freedom when everything seems
too beautiful and calm.

Spring Tide - Van Zoetendaal And The Collection

Van Zoetendaal 2017 ISBN 9789072532350 Acqn 27491
Pb 17x23cm 106pp 83ills 63col 31.50

Published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Nederlands Fotomuseum during summer 2017,
this catalogue includes a selection of the more than 200 photographs from the museums
collection to be shown in their original form; that is, directly printed from the negatives. Many of
the photos are well-known in their cropped versions, yet they are now revealed in their entirety,
giving added insight into the photographers vision through seemingly insignificant and casual
details. Guest curator Willem van Zoetendaal points to the continuing relevance of these images
by juxtaposing them with contemporary photographs, producing unexpected links between past
and present.

Shipwrecks And Ruins Around The World

Seigensha Art Publishing 2017 ISBN 9784861525742 Acqn 27316
Pb 13x19cm 160pp 125col ills 19
Text in Japanese

Playing into our mysterious fascination for things that history has forgotten, this small volume
presents a collection of wrecked vessels and structures of all types, found in a variety of locations
around the world. Beginning with ships that have foundered in shallow coastal inlets or against
rocky headlands, or were left high and dry as waters receded, it continues with inland ruins that
range from decrepit castles and abandoned mansions, to mining complexes, ironworks, and
ghost towns. The geographic location of each object is pinpointed on a map, and a year and
name (if known) are also given. One of the books three sections is dedicated exclusively to ruins
in Japan.

Els Vanden Meersch - Mastering The Curtains

Art Paper Editions 2017 ISBN 9789490800611 Acqn 27353
Pb 17x24cm 92pp 120col ills 19

The result of a four-year research project by artist Els Vanden Meersch touching on two
perspectives in Iran, one public, the other hidden. The first approach focuses on the content and
implementation in the public space of the popular and politicised form of street theatre, Taziyeh.
The second explores the secretive world of the Sufis and their difficulties within the current
political policy. These seeming opposites share common ground in Iranian collective memory via
social and spiritual resistance. Reflections on religion, private and public, transparency and
control, are mediated through a series of images, from which the social potential of secular
mysticism emerges.

Pierre Crom - War In Ukraine

Lecturis 2017 ISBN 9789462262058 Acqn 27415
Pb 17x24cm 208pp 250col ills 32

War in Ukraine by photographer Pierre Crom is a testimony of the events that took place in
Ukraine after the removal from power of the pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych. The
photographer visited the country several times between February 2014 and January 2016 and
visually recorded the onset and course of the war. On the day of the MH17 disaster, Pierre Crom
was already in Donetsk, close to the place where the plane was shot down. In order to visualise
the context of the drama, he stayed there for long periods of time and returned several times.
This book is an extraordinary photographic document that tells the story of the annexation of
Crimea, the start and continuation of the war, the MH17 drama and the events surrounding it.

Roshan Adhihetty Nacktwanderer

Sturm & Drang 2017 ISBN 9783906822136 Acqn 27430
Hb 23x29cm 96pp 42col ills 51.75

In his series of images of nude hikers, Swiss photographer Roshan Adhihetty offers glimpses into
a world previously unknown to many. To learn more about their great yearning to be at one with
nature, he joined a group of nude hikers, documenting their trips over several years. His images
show majestic green landscapes in which European men and women hike naked through
Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Seemingly incongruous in a Western context, the pictures
examine the relationship between the naked body and nature, playing on the tension between a
romantic ideal of human existence and the restrictions of our modern world through unadorned
vulnerability.

Rene Groebli - Rail Magic

Sturm & Drang 2017 ISBN 9783906822105 Acqn 27453
Pb 17x23cm 128pp 80ills 51.75

This collection of 74 photographs was produced by Swiss photographer Ren Groebli and is a
remarkable example of early subjective photography. First published as a series of fifteen images
in 1949 a personal project that was met with dismissive criticism at the time he returned in the
1990s to his early fascination with French steam locomotives and the romanticism of travel by
rail. The resulting book is a dynamic visual document featuring pictures of his first train journey
between Paris and Zrich, taken using either a Leica III F with a single lens or with a twin-lens
Rolleiflex. Groeblis working style is clearly inspired by his experience with moving images and his
love of cinema.

Nora Bibel - Family Comes First

The Green Box 2017 ISBN 9783941644960 Acqn 27538
Hb 30x22cm 100pp 44col ills 28.50

In India, the joint family is a sacred institution deeply rooted in Hindu heritage. In a traditional
indian joint family three or more generations live under one roof, sharing one kitchen, sometimes
even one bank account. Though extended families exist in most parts of rural India and some
cities, joint families are increasingly hard to find. New lifestyles and social codes pose a growing
challenge to traditional values and established roles and rites. But what still remains is the idea of
Family Comes First even in a fast-growing city like Bengalore. The family portraits in the book
were taken in the living rooms of their houses, with many family members wearing traditional
clothes. Like in old family portraits the protagonists had to be very still through the long exposure
time, making everybody seem rather stiff and serious. The portrayed families represent different
social classes of the Indian society. The series consists of 44 family portraits, which are
supplemented by personal information on the family members and the family's social status. The
work has been developed and funded during the bangaloREsidency of the Goethe-Institut Max
Mueller Bhavan Bangalore.

With texts by Christoph Bertrams, Suresh Jayaram, Nupur Basu and Dr. Matthias Harder.

Bert Teunissen - On The Road, Everglades

Fw 2017 ISBN 9789490119522 Acqn 27541
Pb 17x24cm 96pp 73ill 26

Since the mid 1990s Bert Teunissen has been on the road, photographing the landscape. Always
in the same way: shot from behind the steering wheel while driving. This publication focuses on
the dense American landscape of the Everglades in Florida. Bert Teunissen uses an Olympus
Pen; the legendary half frame camera from the 60s and 70s. All photographs are printed on out of
date photographic paper-stock, creating different flares in colours and contrasts, which makes
every print unique and impossible to create again. For Bert Teunissen this irreversible process is
part of his search to capture the fluid state of mind while travelling.
