Allamakee County Cattlemens Association awards scholarships

The Allamakee County Cattlemens Association
recently awarded scholarships which have been
given annually to area graduating seniors who
answer three essay questions on beef, along with
financial support to local college students who
take part in Postsecondary Agricultural Students
(PAS) Conference events. These students are
pictured in the surrounding photos. Funding for
the scholarships and financial support comes
from a variety of events sponsored by the
Cattlemen throughout the year. The Cattlemen
host several grillings in downtown Waukon,
and at the Allamakee County Fair and Waukon
Power Sports. In the fall, the Cattlemen host a
Club Calf Auction at Northeast Iowa Equity Sales
Commission in Waukon, where they sell 30-40
calves to buyers throughout the country, some as
far away as Texas. In the spring, the Cattlemen
conduct a Breeding Soundness Exam (Semen
Check) for area producers. The Cattlemen have
been strong supporters of 4-H and FFA youth
and have also donated money to several local
organizations, including the Veterans Memorial
Healthcare Foundation Christmas Fantasy and
area churches. Pictured above in a photo taken during a recent grilling event sponsored by the Allamakee County Cattlemens

Allamakee County Cattlemens Association offers financial support to local college students
The Allamakee County Cattlemens
Association awarded the six Northeast Iowa
Community College (NICC) students from
Allamakee County pictured at right financial
support in recognition of their achievements at
the Iowa Postsecondary Agricultural Students
(PAS) Conference and advancement to the
National PAS Conference. Pictured at right, left

Nolan Hagen and Zach Bieber, along with Garth
Cooper (left inset photo) and Kaela Wood (right
inset photo). Cooper was a member of the NICC
Beef Specialist team that placed first overall
at the Iowa PAS Conference in February, with
Cooper placing fourth in the Iowa competition as
an individual, and he was also then a member of
the Iowa team that placed third at the National
PAS Conference in March. Berns was a member
of the fourth-place Beef Specialist team at the
Iowa PAS Conference, and Ryan and Bieber
were members of the fifth-place Beef Specialist
team at the Iowa PAS Conference, with Bieber
placing eighth as an individual. Wood was a
member of the third-place Livestock Specialist
team at the Iowa PSA Conference, and Hagen
was a member of the second-place Equine
Specialist team, and the seventh-place individual
in that competition, at the Iowa PAS Conference.
The financial support presented to the students
helped pay for their travel expenses incurred
as part of their trip to the PAS Conferences.
