aspects were also integrated

That is what pioneers do;

but the family, neighbors and
friends have pitched in to
overcome instead of being
overwhelmed. A little of what
Eric is experiencing and how
certain things are to be dealt
with may be attributed to a
father who has established a
rock solid attitude on how to
live life and how to run a farm.
One may continue to observe
the fingerprints of this pioneer
dairyman as others in his
family were assisted and have
moved on in their own farming
operations.
Whether one is a pioneer in
medicine, business, opening
new frontiers or milking cows,
there is the common trait that
wisdom, stubbornness when
called for and perseverance
is what makes and defines a
pioneer. Greg Palmer fits that
mold.

Allamakee County Cattlemens Association offers financial support to local college students
The Allamakee County Cattlemens
Association awarded the six Northeast Iowa
Community College (NICC) students from
Allamakee County pictured at right financial
support in recognition of their achievements at
the Iowa Postsecondary Agricultural Students
(PAS) Conference and advancement to the
National PAS Conference. Pictured at right, left
to right in photo, are Brock Berns, Devin Ryan,
Nolan Hagen and Zach Bieber, along with Garth
Cooper (left inset photo) and Kaela Wood (right

Beef Specialist team that placed first overall
at the Iowa PAS Conference in February, with
Cooper placing fourth in the Iowa competition as
an individual, and he was also then a member of
the Iowa team that placed third at the National
PAS Conference in March. Berns was a member
of the fourth-place Beef Specialist team at the
Iowa PAS Conference, and Ryan and Bieber
were members of the fifth-place Beef Specialist
team at the Iowa PAS Conference, with Bieber
placing eighth as an individual. Wood was a
member of the third-place Livestock Specialist
team at the Iowa PSA Conference, and Hagen
was a member of the second-place Equine
Specialist team, and the seventh-place individual
in that competition, at the Iowa PAS Conference.
The financial support presented to the students
helped pay for their travel expenses incurred
as part of their trip to the PAS Conferences.

completed a new calf barn.
Everything here is raised

and we finish out all the steers.
We keep the beef heifers, said
Trent.
All cows on the farm are

do run a clean-up bull with the
older cows.
In addition to cattle, they
crop around 1,400 acres of
corn, hay, soybeans and oats.
Everything we feed, we grow
ourselves. The bulk of that
is corn. The soybeans are
roasted for protein for the milk
cows, said Tanner.
We never use BST (Bovine

we use all our own feeds,

Todd said the biggest
challenges he faced when

He admitted that other
challenges include the hours
put in during calving season
to ensure the cows dont have
trouble calving and that the
calves are born and get a

getting started when you have
a family member, such as a
parent or grandparent, who is
willing to help get started, Todd
explained.
His advice to anyone getting
started with a beef herd is that
it can be done but one has to
be willing to put in the time and
money needed to make the
operation successful.
