2017-2018 Proposed Budget
by Clay Stauffer
The Woodmont Board met on Monday evening, June 5th, and has now approved an operating
budget for the 2017-2018 year beginning July 1st. The congregational meeting will be on
Sunday, June 18th at 10:35 a.m. in the sanctuary where we will officially vote on both the
budget and the leadership slate. We had a very strong stewardship campaign this year so thank
you to everybody who participated and provided leadership, especially to Jeremiah and Mary
Clare Pyron who served as chairs. The generosity and commitment of Woodmont is inspiring.
Its the people who make up the church and its up to all of us to continue supporting the mission
and ministries of Woodmont. To date, we have received 333 PLEDGES totaling $2,426,505. This
reflects just over an 8% increase in the pledged amount from last year which is very exciting. In an age
where many good churches are struggling and seeing budgets decline, we continue to move forward in faith. When our
stewardship consultant Bruce Barkhauer was here in April, he encouraged us to develop a narrative budget (along with
our line item budget) that shows exactly how our giving goes to support the multiple ministries of Woodmont. In recent
months, we have been developing that narrative budget. From a missional view, here is how your dollars are being put to
use in the new budget year:
WORSHIP ($621,810) - Worship is the most important thing we do as a community. We gather together each Sunday
in community to worship God, be challenged, and to lift each other up. We offer three different styles of worship every
Sunday (Informal at 9:30, Contemporary at 9:45, Traditional at 11) as well as many special services throughout the year. We
are blessed with incredible musical talent of all kinds. Outstanding worship is one of our core values as a church.
SPIRITUAL FORMATION ($487,869) - This includes Adult education, Small Groups, Connection, Stewardship, Leadership
Woodmont, Community Events, Pastoral Care, Membership Assimilation, and Introduction to Woodmont. Spiritual
Formation is important in the life of our church. We worship God with our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
MISSION & OUTREACH ($596,086) - Woodmont remains a missional church committed to serving this community and
this world. There are so many opportunities to serve including Habitat, Room In the Inn, The Nashville Food Project, the
Morgan Scott Project, Tools for Schools, Walk Thru Bethlehem, and many more. We provide significant financial support
to many organizations through our grant based program. We are also committed to healing ministries like AA, Ala Non,
Divorce Care, Grief Recovery, and much more.
CHILDREN & FAMILIES ($502,909) - We continue to have a thriving children and family ministry. Our Kids Commons is
overflowing and in many cases, the classrooms are too crowded. There are many volunteers who make this possible on a
regular basis. We want to continue to support all families and parents in the difficult tasks that they have. A healthy family
ministry is essential.
YOUTH & YOUNG ADULTS ($422,165) As our children move up, our youth ministry continues to grow and expand. This
is such a formative time in the lives of adolescents. The values that they are taught will last a life time. We also want to
continue to reach college and young adults as they find their way in the world.
ADMINISTRATION ($131,661) - In a church Woodmonts size, ongoing communication and administration is a necessity.
We are blessed with a strong administrative staff that works very hard to support the mission, ministries, and programs of
Woodmont on a daily basis.

Finding Positive Meaning
by Katie Sheridan-Gossage
I recently found myself in a discussion regarding how to not get bogged down by daily life, how
to find positive meaning in routine. The conversation meandered and eventually landed upon
this - the importance in ones ability to intentionally choose joy. This idea, weirdly, led me into
sadness. I thought about all the people that help me stay positive in a single day and then what
in the world I would do if they all disappeared I cant manage all the feelings I have on my own!
So I called my dad, my wise, caring, insightful dad. And he had these words for me, Each time
you come to me, Im comforting you, but Im also teaching you. Wow. The moments I feel selfish and
needy, I am being taught self-care, compassion, and love.

Our great Father offers us this each day. Through prayer, we can find peace. Through community, we can find belonging.
Through friendship, we can find comfort. Through worship, we can experience Gods presence. Through silence, we can
hear Gods still, small voice. The list is endless. I invite you to call on your Father and explore what He is offering you.
