CHARLES LAW
Objective
At the end of the experiment, the student should be able to explain how the temperature of
confined gas affects its volume, with all other factors constant.
Skills
1. Manipulating the equipment
2. Reporting findings
3. Synthesizing results into a concept
4. Applying new knowledge

Concepts

In the 1800s, French scientist Jacques Charles made discoveries regarding the effect of
temperature on the volume of gases. He states that At constant pressure, the volume of a
given mass of gas is directly proportional to the absolute temperature.

In mathematical formula:

P1V1 = P2V2 ; with pressure constant

Answers to Questions:

1. What are the variables involved in this activity?

The variables involved in this activity are: temperature, volume with all other factors
constant like pressure and number of moles.

2. How does the temperature of the confined air affect its volume?
When the temperature is increased, the volume of the balloon also increases; if the
temperature is decreased, the volume of the balloon also decreases.

3. What variables are kept constant?

The variables that were kept constant are the pressure and the number of moles.

4. What is Charles Law?

Charles Law states that the volume of the gas is directly proportional to the absolute
temperature with pressure kept constant.

Conclusion/s:

Charles Law shows thatAt constant pressure, the volume of a given mass of gas is directly
proportional to the absolute temperature. When the temperature is increased, the volume of
the balloon also increases. When the temperature is decreased, the volume of the balloon also
decreases.
