INTRODUCTION
Liming is a common practice at al l levels of shrimp farming, but it is
probably used most widely in intensive shrimp fanning. Fertilizer is used
most commonly in extensive and semi-intensive shrimp farm-ing where
little or no feed is applied to ponds. Although liming and fertilization are
common techniques in shrimp production, there has been little research on

their use, and current practices vary widely. Shrimp pond managers often
do not have data 'on the properties of liming materials they use in
ponds or understand the effects of liming. Properties of ferlilizers are
well known, but many different fertilimtion techniques are used. The
purpose of this report is to discuss "state-of-the-art" practices of liming
and fertilizing shrimp ponds.

FERTILIZATION
There has been a tremendous amount of research on fertilization
of freshwater fish ponds. This research has resulted in the develop-
ment of fertilization programs for chemical fertilizers and manures,
which will increase primary productivity by phytoplankton and
ultimately increase fish production. Depending upon fish species
and the natural fertility of water, fertilization may increase produc-
tion 2- to 10-fold (Boyd 1990). Although fenilization can be cost
effective, fertilization will not provide the levels of fish production
possible with feeding. Shrimp farmers have had the same experi-
ence, and fertilization is seldom used alone. It is used to enhance the
production of natural food organisms for shrimp in ponds where
feed applications are the primary source of nutrients for shrimp. It is
generally accepted by pond managers that shrimp production is
