Title: Bay Water Lab

Problem:
Can the water quality be affected by its proximity to storm drains?

Hypothesis: The water that we get closer to the storm drain will be more polluted than the water thats far away
from the drain.

Independent Variable: Proximity to a storm drain

Dependent Variable(s): Dissolved oxygen, nitrates, phosphates, turbidity, temperature, bacteria

Control Group: Tap water

List of Materials: Glass jar, beaker, water monitoring kit

Overview of the Procedure:

How to measure nitrate level:

1. Fill the test tube with the water sample to the 5 mL line
2. Add one of the nitrate pills. Immediately after you add the pill, slide the test tube into the protector sleeve.
3. Cap and mix and wait for two minutes for the tablet to disintegrate.
4. Wait five minutes for the red color to appear and remove the tube from the sleeve.
5. Compare the color of the sample to the nitrate color chart.

pH Procedure:
1. Fill the test tube with the water sample to the 10 mL line.
2. Add one of the pH pills.
3. Cap and mix until the tablet has disintegrated.
4. Compare the pH sample to the pH color chart.

Phosphate procedure:
1. Fill the test tube with the water sample to the 10 mL line.
2. Add one of the phosphorus pills.
3. Cap and mix until the tablet has disintegrated.
4. Wait 5 minutes for the blue color to appear.
5. Compare the color sample to the phosphate color chart.

Turbidity procedure:
1. Remove all objects from the bucket.
2. Fill the bucket to the fill line with water sample.
3. Hold the turbidity chart on top of the jar.
4. Look down into the jar and compare the appearance of the icon and the jar to the chart.

Dissolved oxygen procedure:

1. Record the temperature of the water sample.
2. Fill the small vial to the top with the water sample.
3. Drop in two dissolved oxygen test tabs into the vial.
4. Screw the cap on the tube and make sure no air bubbles are present in the sample.
5. Mix by inverting the tube over and over until the tablets have disintegrated. It will take about four minutes.
6. Wait five more minutes for the color to appear and compare to the dissolved oxygen chart.

Analysis of Results/Conclusion:
Looking at our results it shows that our hypothesis was incorrect. Everything was the same except for the PH
being an 8 for between drains rather than a 7 like both drains were. All tests (that were able to do) gave the exact
same results otherwise. Our results may have differed if we had gone further from the drains but it does show that
anywhere near the drains yields the same results which could mean that the pollution spreads across the water
more than is imagined. If we did this experiment again we would probably go to more places, actually do the
bacteria test, and have a control.
