1. Angles can be classified according to their size.

Name Name
Angle size Diagram of angle Angle size Diagram of angle
Between 0 and 90 Acute 180 Straight

90 Right Between 180 Reflex

and 360
Between 90 Obtuse 360 Revolution
and 180
2. An angle can be named using three capital letters from the English alphabet: two for
the arms and one for the vertex of the angle.
3. The letter representing the vertex of the angle is always placed in the middle. Use the
symbol instead of the word angle before the three letters.

8 State the type of angle that the minute hand of a clock sweeps while moving for the period of:
a 10 minutes b 15 minutes
c 20 minutes d 30 minutes
e 45 minutes f 1 hour.
9 At various times of the day the hands of a clock form two angles: the inside angle (the
smaller one) and the outside angle (the larger one).
a State the type of the inside angle, formed by the hands of the clock at:
i 1 oclock ii 20 minutes to 12
iii 6 oclock iv 9 oclock
v quarter to 4 vi half past 10.
b Write two different times when the
inside angle of the clock is:
i acute ii obtuse
iii right.
10 Angles are very important in engineering 1
and architecture. Three angles have been
marked in the photograph shown. 3 2
a Classify each angle.
b Use a protractor to measure each angle.
c With a partner, locate as many other
angles as you can that are the same
size as the marked angles 1, 2 and 3.

5D triangles
types of triangles
Every triangle has three angles and three sides. B
Capital letters of the English alphabet are used at each
vertex (in any order) to name triangles.
The symbol D is used in place of the word triangle.
This triangle can be named DABC. (It can also be named
DBCA, DCAB, DACB, DBAC or DCBA.) A C
Identical marks on the sides of the triangle are used to
indicate that the sides have the same length. Likewise, identical marks on the angles indicate
that the angles are equal in size.
