Evaluation:

So we were asked to do our Final Major Project for this year and we could do a production
for anything that we have done before in one of our Units. So I could have chosen to do a
documentary, short film, music video, radio station or an animation as these are what we
have done in our other units. I decided to do a music video, the reason I chose to do this is
because I really like watching music videos, I watch them every single day so thats a lot
more than the other ones, so I feel I have a very good understanding of music videos so I
thought I could do a music video a lot better than doing an animation for example as I dont
really watch any animations at all, so I thought doing a music video was the best option for
me to do. For this project I done it all on my own so that means I would have had to do all
the preproduction on my own which consists of a Brief, Script, Storyboard, Crew List, Prop
List, Go Wrong Plan and a legal plan. I also have to film the music video as well as edit it.
Then to go on to pitch my idea and video to a crowd.

I chose to do a music video for the song Basket Case Green Day, I chose this song because
I really like green day as a band, even though it isnt my choice of music I do like green day
songs and I feel each song of theirs tells a different story, so I thought one of their songs
would be better to do a narrative music video then my type of music. The song Basket Case
is about people who suffer mental illnesses such as paranoia and the song is trying to
express how people who suffer from these mental illnesses feel, so I thought I could make a
music video which will show how people how people feel with that kind of illness.

The genre of this music video is going to be a Rock as the song and band are rock. I tried to
portray the stereotypical rock genre music video by doing a hybrid of narrative and
performance music video, which means it, will be showing shots of the band playing as well
as a story that will be shown. I also tried to do it by doing it in an abandoned house, which
has been used in many other rock genre music videos. I found this out by doing research and
watching other rock genre music videos and evaluate how they have made it to look like a
rock video. For example another rock band that has shown them doing a music video in an
abandoned house is Anthrax Madhouse. I also send out surveys to many different people
and the results I got was exactly what I was wanting, as people replied saying in a rock video
theyd want to see a hybrid of a narrative and a performance.
I believe I planned and researched the topic well enough as I watched a lot of other rock
music videos and found out what was stereotypical about them all. My results were that
most rock songs have a performance as well as a narrative, and most of rock videos are shot
in dark or abandoned places, this may link in with a rock concert as they are very dark and
messy like a mosh pit in a rock concert. I also sent around a survey and people replied saying
the same results that I found out by watching many rock music videos. People replied to the
questionnaire saying they would want to see a narrative and a performance and they would
want the band to be playing in a dark place. Therefore, its certain everyone is pretty clear on
what they would expect to see in a rock music video, so I took all of that evidence with me
when making my production. So I believe I planned and researched the topic well enough.

During making this music video I did face a couple problems. I was going to have scenes of
someone smashing a load of objects up in the woods, however it rained on the day I was
meant to shoot it and when I checked the weather forecast it said that it would be raining
for the rest of the week. I overcame this problem by shooting them scenes in the abandoned
house that the band would be preforming in, in the end I feel this has worked out better for
me as thinking about it now it would have looked weird someone smashing objects in the
woods and it may have lost the narrative of the story. Another problem I faced during
shooting the video, was when I arrived at the location of the abounded house I looked in my
camera and I had forgotten to bring the SD card for the camera, so I overcame this problem
by going to a nearby shop and buying another SD card in order to shoot the video.

I feel the mise-en-scene of the music video suits the song very well as the song is about
people with mental illnesses and how they feel with having these illnesses. So I filmed my
video in an abandoned house which is very messy, broke and has a lost feel to it which will
link to people who have mental illnesses as they feel also feel messed up like the abandoned
house and they feel broke and lost like the abandoned house. I feel this is what makes my
video very smart on how I have done it. Then the lead singer also starts to smash things up
around the house which can also link into mental illness as some people can just lash out like
that when they have that illness or it could mean that these people with mental illnesses
feel trapped and need to break free, which is also a good reason why the whole of the video
is in this abandoned house. I only have two actors in my music video and they also suit the
video as I have an actor who is preforming the part of a cicatrise, so they are dressed in a
suit jacket and then I also have a mental illness patient which has a very long t-shirt on,
which is implying a patient and then he has a tag around his wrist which you can see in close
ups of him playing the guitar, which says patient 4201.
I believe I done the camera work and editing well as I made sure I had many shots from
different angles, which I could cut together so you see the lead singer from many different
perspectives in a fast motion. I also like how Ive done the editing even thought I am still new
to editing considering the lack of experience in the software however I managed to get some
help which allowed me to use special effects as well as putting some shots into slow-mo.
If I was to do this project again I would try and get a few more actors as the band Green Day
is meant to have 3 members however I could only get one other actor so I had to do the
music video with just one lead singer for the song. I would also like to get into editing a bit
more so I could edit it better by using better transitions, effects and just general editing
skills.
