SUMMARY
Executive summary: This document provides in the annex the third summary of data and
information in the EEDI database
Output: 7.3.2.5
Related documents: MEPC 66/21; MEPC 67/4/3, MEPC 67/20, MEPC 67/INF.4;
MEPC 68/INF.13; MEPC 69/5/5 and MEPC 69/INF.16
Background
1 In accordance with regulation 21.6 of MARPOL Annex VI, at the beginning of phase 1
(1 January 2015 to 31 December 2019) and at the midpoint of phase 2 (1 January 2020
to 31 December 2024), the Organization shall review the status of technological developments
and, if proven necessary, amend the time periods, the EEDI reference line parameters for
relevant ship types and the reduction rates set out in regulation 21.
2 In this regard, MEPC 66 agreed to the minimum data needed to support the review
and invited IACS to submit these data to the Secretariat on an ad hoc basis in a timely manner
to support the review (MEPC 66/21, paragraph 4.53).
3 Following MEPC 66, the Secretariat established an email address for data
submissions (eedi@imo.org) and developed an EEDI database.
.2 to avoid duplication of data, agreed that the ship identification number should
be included in the data set submitted to the Secretariat for inclusion in the
EEDI database, noting that such information would be held and used by the
Secretariat only (MEPC 68/21, paragraphs 3.70 and 3.71).
5 As a result, the EEDI database currently includes the following data to support the
review of the status of technological development under regulation 21.6 of MARPOL Annex VI:
.2 type of ship;
.4 year of delivery;
.5 applicable Phase;
.6 required EEDI;
7 Following a request from the coordinator of the correspondence group, and noting
that the group was instructed to consider what information and data are pertinent for the review
and how that information and data should be collated and analysed, including information
obtained from the EEDI database, the Secretariat forwarded the latest information from the
database to the coordinator on 4 May 2016, for consideration by the group in the same format
as given in annexes 1 and 2 of document MEPC 69/INF.16.
8 By the date of this document, data had been received from eight IACS members
for 1,917 ships in total. These data, aggregated and anonymized by the Secretariat, are
provided in annex 1. To illustrate distribution for each type of ship, graphical representations
are also provided in annex 2.
9 The Committee should note that some IACS members have provided EEDI data not
only for ships for which EEDI regulations are mandatory but also for ships to which the EEDI
was applied on a voluntary basis. These data are identified and also provided in annexes 1
and 2, respectively.
10 The numbers of ships in each type of ship category in the EEDI database are as
follows:
11 The Committee should also note that the Secretariat has included in the database
additional information on the "attained EEDI reduction rate relative to reference line value",
to provide the attained reduction factor for each of the ships in the database.

1
LNG carriers are included under gas carriers in the Phase 0 period.
2
EEDI regulations apply to cruise passenger ships having non-conventional propulsion
from 1 September 2015.
