Whatisamagicsquare?

A magic square is a 3x3, 4x4, or 5x5 square (aka, a matrix) that is divided
into smaller squares. Each small square contains a number. Each
horizontal, vertical, and diagonal row add up to the same total. Depending
on the size of matrix, you will need to determine how many combinations of
numbers you need.

In this example, it is a 3x3 matrix, there are 8 combinations, and 15 is our

magic number. Theres a trick (magic trick) I will teach you later to skip
this step.

Horizontally
2 + 7 + 6 = 15
9 + 5 + 1 = 15
4 + 3 + 8 = 15

Vertically
2 + 9 + 4 = 15
7 + 5 + 3 = 15
6 + 1 + 8 = 15

Diagonally
2 + 5 + 8 = 15
6 + 5 + 4 = 15
HowdoIcreateone?
Here are 4 steps to get you started:

1. Decide what size matrix you wanna make

a. 3x3 (8), 4x4 (16), or 5x5 (25)
b. How many combinations do you need? (8, 16, or 25?)
2. Choose 9 nine consecutive numbers
a. Consecutive is just a fancy word for continuous, on going. You
will see this word repeated.

The numbers you may choose can be...

Consecutive numbers
EX: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Consecutive odd numbers

EX: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17

Consecutive even numbers

EX: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18

Multiples (multiply by) of numbers

EX: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512

3. Add all 9 numbers together to get a sum

4. Once you get the sum of all 9 numbers, divide the sum by matrix
number
a. If you chose a 3x3 matrix, divide by 3
i. If you chose a 4x4 matrix, divide by 4
1. If you chose a 5x5 matrix, divide by 5
b. The number you get after you divide will be your magic number!

Heres that trick I was talking about to finding out where to place your
numbers in your matrix.
REMEMBER THIS PATTERN:

2, 3, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2, 3, 2

Each number represents where to place your numbers.

3 = corner
4 = middle
2 = cross

I will show you in my example how to apply this pattern. I will refer to
this as my magic trick.

Exampletime!
I have chosen to do a 3x3 matrix with these 9 consecutive even
numbers

24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40

I now need to find out what the sum is and then divide by 3 to get my
magic number...

24 + 26 + 28 + 30 + 32 + 34 + 36 + 38 + 40 = 288

The sum is 288. 288 divided by 3 is 96.

288/3 = 96

96 is my magic number!

Magic Trick!

Bring your numbers back,

24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40

Now, place that pattern underneath them

24 26 28 30 32 34 36 38 40
2 3 2 3 4 3 2 3 2

This will help you know where to place your numbers!

My3x3magicsquare!

24 26 28 30 32 34 36 38 40
2 3 2 3 4 3 2 3 2
cross corner cross corner middle corner cross corner cross

Now plug in corner and middle numbers in magic square.

The cross numbers may vary, add corners then subtract by 96 to find out
which cross number works!

26 40 30

36 32 28

34 24 38

30 + 26 = 56
96 - 56 = 40

34 + 26 = 60
96 - 60 = 36

30 + 38 = 68
96 - 68 = 28

34 + 38 = 72
96 - 72 = 24
