MIS is short for management information system or management information

services. Management information system, or MIS, broadly refers to a computer-based
system that provides managers with the tools to organize, evaluate and efficiently manage
departments within an organization. In order to provide past, present and prediction
information, a management information system can include software that helps in decision
making, data resources such as databases, the hardware resources of a system, decision
support systems, people management and project management applications, and any
computerized processes that enable the department to run efficiently.


Management Information Systems (MIS) provide management with information

necessary for decision making in all areas of the firm. This paper presents a conceptual
approach to construction of MIS simulation models. Such models may be used for efficient
structuring of real world systems. The approach used herein incorporates a simple system of
flow diagramming the functional elements of the MIS. From the flow diagrams a set of
difference equations is developed to provide a model structure for computer simulation runs.
The quality of the MIS is determined by the information content of the data provided for
the management decision making.


Systems modeling or system modeling is the interdisciplinary study of the use of

models to conceptualize and construct systems in business and IT development. A common
type of systems modeling is function modeling, with specific techniques such as the
Functional Flow Block Diagram and IDEF0. These models can be extended using functional
decomposition, and can be linked to requirements models for further systems partition.
Contrasting the functional modeling, another type of systems modeling is architectural
modeling which uses the systems architecture to conceptually model the structure, behavior,
and more views of a system.

The Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN), a graphical representation for
specifying business processes in a workflow, can also be considered to be a systems
modeling language.


An information system is essentially made up of five components hardware, software,

database, network and people. These five components integrate to perform input, process,
output, feedback and control. Hardware consists of input/output device, processor, operating
system and media devices. Software consists of various programs and procedures. Database
consists of data organized in the required structure.

Network consists of hubs, communication media and network devices. People consist
of device operators, network administrators and system specialist. Information processing
consists of input; data process, data storage, output and control. During input stage data
instructions are fed to the systems which during process stage are worked upon by software
programs and other queries. During output stage, data is presented in structured format and


In any given organization information system can be classified based on the usage of
the information. Therefore, an information system in an organization can be divided into
operations support system and management support system.

Operations support system

In an organization, data input is done by the end user which is processed to generate
information products i.e. reports, which are utilized by internal and or external users. Such a
system is called operation support system. The purpose of the operation support system is to
facilitate business transaction, control production, support internal as well as external
communication and update organization central database. The operation support system is
further divided into a transaction-processing system, processing control system and enterprise
collaboration system.

Transaction Processing System (TPS)

In manufacturing organization, there are several types of transaction across

department. Typical organizational departments are Sales, Account, Finance, Plant,
Engineering, Human Resource and Marketing. Across which following transaction may occur
sales order, sales return, cash receipts, credit sales; credit slips, material accounting,
inventory management, depreciation accounting, etc. These transactions can be categorized
into batch transaction processing, single transaction processing and real time transaction

Process Control System

In a manufacturing organization, certain decisions are made by a computer system

without any manual intervention. In this type of system, critical information is fed to the
system on a real-time basis thereby enabling process control. This kind of systems is referred
as process control systems.

Enterprise Collaboration System

In recent times, there is more stress on team effort or collaboration across different
functional teams. A system which enables collaborative effort by improving communication
and sharing of data is referred to as an enterprise collaboration system.

Management Support System

Managers require precise information in a specific format to undertake an

organizational decision. A system which facilitates an efficient decision making process for
managers is called management support system. Management support systems are essentially
categorized as management information system, decision support system, expert system and
accounting information system. Management information system provides information to
manager facilitating the routine decision-making process. Decision support system provides
information to manager facilitating specific issue related solution.


In business and IT development the term "systems modeling" has multiple meanings.
It can relate to:

the use of model to conceptualize and construct systems

the interdisciplinary study of the use of these models
the systems modeling, analysis, and design efforts
the systems modeling and simulation, such as system dynamics
any specific systems modeling language

As a field of study systems modeling has emerged with the development of system
theory and systems sciences. As a type of modeling systems modeling is based on systems
thinking and the systems approach. In business and IT systems modeling contrasts other
approaches such as:

agent based modeling

data modeling and
mathematical modeling

In "Methodology for Creating Business Knowledge" (1997) Arbnor and Bjerke the
systems approach (systems modeling) was considered to be one of the three basic
methodological approaches for gaining business knowledge, beside the analytical approach
and the actor's approach (agent based modeling)


A Management Information Systems (MIS) focuses on the management of

information systems to provide efficiency and effectiveness of strategic decision making. The
concept may include systems termed transaction processing system, decision support
systems, expert systems, and executive information systems. The term MIS is often used in
the business schools. Some of MIS contents are overlapping with other areas such as
information system, information technology, informatics, e-commerce and computer science.
Therefore, the MIS term sometimes can be inter-changeable used in above areas.

Management Information Systems as an academic discipline studies people,
technology, organizations, and the relationships among them. This definition relates
specifically to "MIS" as a course of study in business schools. Many business schools (or
colleges of business administration within universities) have an MIS department, alongside
departments of accounting, finance, management, marketing, and may award degrees (at
undergraduate, master, and doctoral levels) in Management Information Systems. MIS
professionals help organizations to maximize the benefit from investments in personnel,
equipment, and business processes.
